since expanded and now contains many features that would be of use to
anyone.

The following are the main areas covered by this text:

1. Installation notes.

2. Project overview.

3. Functions provided

4. Areas within the window.

5. Entering data

6. Accepted data formats.

7. Registration.

8. Shareware disclaimer.

INSTALLATION NOTES.

To use this software your system must be running DOS 3.0 or
higher, and windows 3.x or better. You will also require the file
VBRUN300.DLL, this file should be supplied with this program.

If this program has been provided in its distribution format then all
you have to do is run the setup.exe file on the floppy disk supplied

From within windows program manager launch file manager, and click
on the icon for the letter of your floppy drive (normally A:)
if the file VBRUN300.DLL is not already on your system then select
the file VBRUN300.DLL and then press F8. In the To box enter the
directory for your windows files, normally c:\windows then press
	the OK button.

To install Hamcalc from its distribution disk simply run the setup.exe
	file from your floppy drive

To install the Hamcalc program file and associated text file select
the following files on the floppy disk:
			Hamcalc.exe
			Hamcalc.txt
Then press F8. in the To box type the following
		c:\hamcalc
then press the OK button. Windows will now inform you that this
directory does not exist, and ask you if you wish to create it.
Answer Yes, at this point the directory will be created for you
and the Two files will be copied to it.

Now set your file manager to a size such that you can see part of
your desk top. activate whichever group window you wish to put your
hamcalc application into, and ensure that it occupies some of the
area not in use by file manager. Return to file manager and log your
hard drive by clicking on its corresponding icon. now move down the
list of directories until you come to the one called Hamcalc. Double
click on this directory and in the right window you should see the
Two files that were copied there for you. click on and hold the
Hamcalc.exe file now drag the file and drop it into the group you
	opened earlier in this paragraph.

You can now close file manager if you wish. At this point if all is
well you should see a new icon in the group you dragged the file to,
double clicking on this icon will launch the Hamcalc program.

2. PROJECT OVERVIEW

The need for calculating values in electronics and amateur radio
can at times be very repetitive, from this problem Hamcalc was born

The need to remember formulae and equations, and the need sometimes
to transpose those equations, can at times be very time consuming
and frustrating. As with any work you do the computer can simplify
this by making calculation simpler, this can be achieved by letting
the computer remember the appropriate formulae, and when needed
letting the computer transpose the formula to whichever form is
	required.

3. FUNCTIONS PROVIDED

The functions provided in Hamcalc V3.b.2 are

	CALCULATIONS:

	a. Tuned circuits calculations for series or parallel LC circuits.
	b. Frequency / wavelength calculations for radio purposes.
	c. Frequency / wavelength calculations for audio and ultrasonic
 	   purposes.
	d. Horizon distance calculations.
	e. Inductive reactance calculations.
	f. Capacitive reactance calculations.
	g. Simple RC or CR filter calculations also CR time constants.
	h. Single layer inductor calculator.
	i. Ohms law calculator.
	j. Decibel calculations (for power or voltage).
	k. A.C. voltage conversions.
	l. Series capacitors solutions.
	m. Parallel resistors solutions.

	TOOLS:
Both these tools may be operated independently of the main Hamcalc
	program.
	a. Conversions calculator.
	b. Quick launch to the windows calculator.

4. AREAS WITHIN THE WINDOW

When you first open Hamcalc you will see the welcome message, on the
main screen. To access the functions available, you will need to use
	the menus provided.

You may access the menus in three ways:

		a. Point at the menu with the mouse pointer, and click on it.
		b. use the ALT key together with the underlined character in
the menu you wish to access.
		c. use the ALT key followed by using the direction arrow keys
to move through the menus available.

There are three columns to the standard Hamcalc screen. The first
column is the type of information you are required to enter i.e.
resistor, capacitor, frequency etc. the second column is where the
values are entered, and the third column is the units required in
the entry field. There is on exception to this and that is in the
single layer inductor calculations. In this module the bottom two
values are the output from the calculations and cannot be altered
	when entering your data.

5. ENTERING DATA

when entering data simply place the cursor in the appropriate field
and enter your data in any of the formats set out in section 6. You
may set the cursor position by using the TAB key to go one position
forward, use the SHIFT and TAB keys together to go one position
back, or you may position the cursor with the mouse.
With the exception of the single layer inductor calculator, any of
the values may be entered and any left blank, the program will
recognise the data that has been entered, and calculate the missing
	values.
For example this means that in the ohms law calculator any two
values may be entered and the other two will be calculated.
If in any module you do not enter sufficient data for the
calculations to be made then no calculation will be carried out and
	no values returned.

once you have entered the known values move the cursor to the
calculate button and press it. The unknown values will now be filled
in for you. After you have performed on calculation press the CLEAR
VALUES button and then you can enter your next set of data.

5.a ENTERING DATA IN THE CONVERSION CALCULATOR

In this calculator you only need to enter data into one field. Every
time the data in one field changes the converted amount is
	automatically shown in the other.
When using this calculator it should be noted that with the
exception of exponential quantities, multipliers cannot be used.

5b. SPECIAL NOTES FOR THE SINGLE LAYER INDUCTOR CALCULATOR

This module calculates the number of turns required to create single
layer air cored inductors. In this module you may enter the diameter
of the former in either inches or metres. you may also use all the
standard multipliers. e.g. for a 22millimetre former you could enter
	22m or 2.2c or .022
The program also allows for the use of either SWG wire gauges or AWG
	wire gauges

6. ACCEPTED DATA FORMATS

Every attempt has been made to make the data input routine as user
friendly as possible. to this end it is possible to enter data in a
	wide range of formats.
		a. you may enter data as a normal numeric value using
standard decimal notation e.g. 345 or 671.43 or 87654329 etc.

		b. you may also use exponential values e.g.
			7.6e3 or 10e6 etc.

		c. you may use any standard decimal multiplier
e.g. to enter 3.3 megohms you could use 3.3M or 3M3
to enter 4700 you could use 4.7k or 4.7e3
when entering any values you may use the letter that
indicates the multiplier as the decimal place. e.g. 4k7 or
in the case of an inductor or capacitor 3u3 or 2200p or u33 etc.

The following are a list of the multipliers you can use in Hamcalc:

		p	pico	*10e-12
		n	nano	*10e-9
		u	micro	*10e-6
		m	milli	*10e-3
		c	centi	*10e-2
		k	kilo	*10e3
		M	Mega	*10e6

you may also use the letter r as the decimal place in resistors e.g.
  			4r7 or r47 etc
IMPORTANT NOTE
Take care when using these multipliers as the results may
be affected, 3M3 is not the same as 3m3

it should be remembered that between each calculation you should use the
clear values button, or you may get unexpected results.
