1. What is Screen Logger ?
--------------------------

Screen Logger is like a handycam to your screen. It can record
everything your computer monitor displays on the screen. The main
feature of Screen Logger is to capture your screen and log it into
log files for you to view at any time. This is very important feature
if you need to keep backups for your work, do some troubleshooting on
your computer, or even if you just want to know what happens to your
computer while you're away. By capturing screens and log them into
log files will give you a figure on what happens to your computer.
If you need to record only keystrokes, you can try KeyKey, keystrokes
recorder (http://www.mikkotech.com).

Now, you know why you want to log your screens to log files. Then
why choose Screen Logger ?
- Screen Logger can log screens based on time interval, on keyboard
event, or even on mouse event. You can choose what will trigger the
logging. You can set, for example, to capture screen every 1 minute
and or every 10 keystrokes, and or every mouse clicks, etc. It's
  very flexible and configurable.
- Screen Logger can set which part of screens to be captured. You can
capture full screen, active window, or even only portion of screen.
You can set Screen Logger to capture "surrounding rectangle" screen
at keyboard input position ! You can also set Screen Logger to cap-
ture "surrounding rectangle" screen at mouse click position ! Thus,
Screen Logger can capture the area of screen of your interest ! So,
Screen Logger can capture a very focused screen area, and also
  reduce log files' size !
- High performance. Screen Logger won't impact much on your computer
  performance.
- Security feature, including password protection to Screen Logger
  manager and viewer.
- Automatic log files deletion feature. You can set maximum log file
size, or expiration days before log files being deleted. This way,
you can control log files size not to be too large.
- Fast and nice viewer. You can view log files fast on certain date.
Log files are arranged in a database structure that enable Screen
Logger viewer to retrieve log files data on certain date fast.
- Play-back feature on Screen Logger viewer. You can view your log
files by playing it. A nice feature, isn't it ?
- Multiple screens can be viewed and played-back concurrently ! This
feature enables you to compare several screens on different date
  and time.

3. How to use
-------------

Screen Logger is designed to run in Windows 95 / 98 / NT / 2000.
It is loaded and run automatically with Windows at Windows startup.
It runs in the background and is invisible in the taskbar.
First, install Screen Logger by launching install.exe. It will
ask you directory location to install Screen Logger and whether to
create shortcut icon on the desktop.
You can also install Screen Logger with command line for quick
installation :

install install_dir [log_file_dir].

where : install_dir = Screen Logger installation directory
log_file_dir = Screen Logger log file directory
Example : C:\>install C:\SL C:\SL\LOG

After installing Screen Logger, reboot your computer. You can
configure your Screen Logger settings by launching Screen Logger Man-
ager (slman.exe).

========================== Manager Program ===========================
Here you're asked to enter registration code. If you have got
your registration code, just register your Screen Logger here. If not,
to continue trying, just "Skip" this screen.
There are 4 menus here :
* Recording Option
* Log File Option
* Password Option
* Menu

****************************** Recording Option.
In this menu, you can configure :
- Which events should trigger screen recording. There are 3 options :
  1. Keystroke event
  2. Mouse event
  3. Time interval

You can select one or all options. Normally people like to record
screens based on time interval. So that they will have a clear figure
what they did on their computer from time to time. On some other cases
people like to record screens on mouse event, such as mouse click.
Usually if you need to have a clear figure on what you do with some
applications, screen logging based on mouse click will be your choice.
For example, if you need to record what you did with your browser,
which link or button you clicked, etc. On other cases, you may want to
records screen based on keystroke events. Such as on chatting program,
recording based on keystroke may be of your choice. But be aware that,
if you choose keystroke event based recording, you should consider not
to log on every keystroke possible. This may drop the performance. You
may configure to log on every 10th keystrokes or on elapsed time 5 se-
conds after that keystroke event.

Keystroke event based recording.
Now, let's see how to configure screen recording based on key-
stroke event. Press button "Define..." at the right side of "Keystroke
" option. A dialog box will pop up. In this dialog box, you can define
the screen size you want to record. You may record full screen, or
active window, or even portion of screen. If you choose to record full
screen, you should consider the space needed to record such big screen
size. You may consider to record only portion of screen. "Surrounding
rectangle" option may be of your choice. Here you can select rectangle
size. The larger the rectangle size, the bigger the space needed to
log the screen. By selecting "Surrounding rectangle" option, Screen
Logger will log only portion of screen which surrounds the keystroke
event location (with the size you defined).
Here, you can also define how often to log screens. Whether to
record screen on very keystroke possible, or on every n keystrokes, or
after n seconds after the last keystrokes, etc. Record screen on every
keystroke possible is not recommended. If you type often, log file
size will grow very large, and the performance may drop.
Press button "Apply" if you have finished ...

Mouse event based recording.
Now, it's the time to see how to record screen based on mouse
event. Press button "Define..." at the right side of "Mouse Event" op-
tion. A dialog box will op up. Like before, you can define screen size
you want to record here : full screen, active window, or portion of
screen (surrounding rectangle of mouse event location).
You can also define which mouse event should trigger the logging.
Mouse click is recommended, but mouse move is not recommended. Besides
log file size will grow quickly, performance may drop. You can also
define to log screens after n seconds since the last mouse event.
Press button "Apply" if you have finished ...

Time interval based recording.
This is the most common and selected option. Here you can define
to log screens on certain elapsed time. And like before, you can also
define screen size you want to record : full screen, active window, or
portion of screen ( surrounding rectangle of mouse event or keyboard
input location ).
Press button "Apply" if you have finished ...

Recording status and image information to record.
Still in the "Recording Option" menu, you can set Screen Logger
to actively recording, or to stop recording.
You can also define image information to record, whether color or
black and white. Don't worry about "black and white". It is actually
"gray scale", so that image will still be clear. True color is not
recommended, since log file size will grow fast with it.
You also see "Compress" option. If you uncheck this "Compress"
option, Screen Logger will still compress the images, but with simpler
algorithm. If you check "Compress" option, Screen Logger will compress
images with better algorithm.

****************************** Log File Option.
In this menu, you can define on which directory, log files should
reside. You can also define maximum log file size and age here. Log
files are stored based on date. If you have run Screen Logger for 3
days, and each day you use your computer, you'll get 3 image log files
besides index log files. If you set maximum log file size to be 5 MB,
Screen Logger will check if the 3 files are larger than 5 MB. If yes,
Screen Logger will delete the oldest log file. If the 2 files are
still larger than 5 MB, the second log file will also be deleted, and
so on, until the total log files less than 5 MB.
If you set log files age to be 5 days, the image log files which
are older than 5 days will be deleted.
This is the way Screen Logger keeps log files up to date. Press
button "Apply" when you finished ...
Here you can also delete log files manually at "Log File Dele-
tion" sub menu. Just define the date range of log files to delete. And
press button "Delete log files now !" to delete the log files ...

****************************** Password Option.
In this menu, you can define password for Screen Logger Manager,
and also password for Screen Logger Viewer program. Just leave all
fields blank, if you don't want to have any password.
Press button "Apply" when you finish ...

****************************** About Option.
Do you want to know more information about the program ? Go here!
You can also visit program homepage here ... Press button "Go" to vi-
sit program homepage or copy URL address shown on the left of button
"Go" and paste it into your browser.

=========================== Viewer Program ===========================
Launch Screen Logger Viewer program ( slview.exe ). Here you can
view the log files ( e.g. all screens that have been recorded ). Just
choose menu File->New. A dialog box will appear. In this dialog box,
you can specify the date of the log file you want to view. By default
it shows today date.
In this dialog box, there are also some options :
- whether to replay manually or automatically.
- whether to display fit to screen or standard (enable scrolling).
In normal condition, you may want to replay manually and to display
in standard mode ( enable scrolling if images stored are larger than
screen display ).
Choose the date you like and other options, then press button
"Ok". Screen Logger will display images stored in log files in a
child window. You can view ( by File->New ) other log files date at
any time, and Screen Logger will create another child window for that
log file with other date.
Together with child window displaying the images, Screen Logger
also shows a toolbar to control the child window display. Let's name
this tool bar "Control Center". In this "Control Center", you can see
the images date and time, and also the frame number. You can go to
any frame number with this "Control Center". You can also play the
log files which contains the images automatically. You can also set
the display in the child window to fit the screen.
You can also copy the screen to the clipboard, thus allowing you
to paste it into your drawing or graphics tools.
