 1. What is FArc???
:
FArc is a small tool that searches files both in the file system and
in archives. You simply give a filemask and FArc starts searching.

This package should contain at least the following files:
    - FARC.EXE - the DOS program
    - FARC.TXT - documentation
    - FARC.HIS - history file
    - FILE_ID.DIZ - small BBS description file

  If you type
    FArc *.zip
the program will search every file in the current directory and prints
out every filename that matches - either as a file or in an archive.

Lets suppose your directory looks like that:

 - - - ---------------------------------------------------------------- - - -

    FILE1.TXT - is a dummy file
    FILE2.TXT - is also a dummy file
    LETTER.DOC - is a WinWord document
OLD_LET.ARJ - is an ARJ archive
PETER.ZIP - is an WinZIP archive

  OLD_LET.ARJ contains:
    JAN98\LETTERS.ZIP - letters of january 1998
    FEB98\LETTERS.ZIP - letters of february 1998
    MAR98\LETTERS.ZIP - letters of march 1998
    APR98\LETTERS.ZIP - letters of april 1998

  PETER.ZIP contains:
    program.exe
    gfx\gfx1.jpg
    gfx\gfx2.jpg

 - - - ---------------------------------------------------------------- - - -

  "FArc *.zip" would find:
    PETER.ZIP - it's a valid filename
    <old_let.arj> JAN98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> FEB98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> MAR98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> APR98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches

  "FArc ?E*.*" would find:
    LETTER.DOC - it's a valid filename
    PETER.ZIP - it's a valid filename
    <old_let.arj> JAN98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> FEB98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> MAR98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches
    <old_let.arj> APR98\LETTERS.ZIP - the filename "LETTERS.ZIP" matches

  "FArc f*" would find:
    FILE1.TXT - it's a valid filename
    FILE2.TXT - it's a valid filename

  "FArc old*zip" would find:
    nothing

  and so on...
The pattern matching just works just as the "DIR" command.

 2. Commandline switches
:
FArc supports the follwoing commandline switches:

   /?, /H - display a small help screen
/AD - scan all drives and subdirectories
   /Mn - stop after n macthing filenames
/NA - do not scan archives
if you use this switch, it's better to use DIR ;-)
/NE - do not show errors
/NF - do not show matching filenames
/NL - do not use long filenames under Windows 9x
/NM - show only files that do NOT match the filemask
/NS - do not scan for EXE SFX archives
/Pn - pause after every 24 lines of output
   /S - search subdirectories too
/X - extended information at the end

 3. Which archives are supported by FArc?
:
Currently FArc supports 71 different archive types.
FArc also supports standard DOS SFX archives. FArc contains a generic
engine for detecting overlays so theoretically all SFX's are detected.

Here is the list of all archives supported by FArc:

 4. How to get a newer version of FArc?
:
   - visit my programming homepage at http://surf.to/phax
which is a shortcut for http://unet.univie.ac.at/~a9605263/gettyp/

   - write me an eMail to phax@suddendischarge.com
                       or phax@writeme.com

 5. Known bugs :(
:
   - maybe some archive listings are not perfect but I'm working to
     fix 'em all
   - long filenames seems not to work on Windows 9x network drives
use /NL to keep FArc working - ThanX to George Lyapko
   - the last file in some special ACE archives is not listed correct.
but I could not yet reproduce this error

 6. Good ideas?
:
Yes, very many, but they take time ...
   e.g. NE/PE/LE SFX archive support

 7. ThanX
:

  George Lyapko
for information exchange and bug reports

  e95
for bug reporting and testing and good suggestions and ...

  Richard Green
for upload FArc onto his homepage and for bug reporting

all the people who sent me archivers I don't had
