C42PDF

2001.03.10.

C42PDF
version: 0.08 build 1996.06.10

http://c42pdf.ffii.org

C42PDF version 0.08 build 1999-06-10
convert CCITT4 multipage 6.0 TIFF to A4 PDF 1.1
To now, this program - evolved from some amateur experimentation with Thomas Merz PDFlib v 0.6 library and code - has mainly been used for the fast conversion of medium-sized (1-200 pages) scans e.g. of journal articles or other scientific documents (sometimes including sice reduction to allow for headers to be added in a second step). As the "ecological niche" it inhabits is so tiny, it should be one of the rather fast programs for CCITT->TIFF conversion; please respond if you find faster programs.
Addendum(1999-05-27): convergent evolution is a common phenomenon for small niches :-). To pdfzone.com, a similar tiff2pdf had been submitted six days before c42pdf. As of today, I still claim c42pdf to be faster (due to less loading overhead for tinier binary?) and the source (library) is more open, but it would be unfair not to mention the competing fastio.com site for other options, file formats, OS etc.
Addendum (2000-06-10): c42pdf can be optimally used where you produce the scans yourself or you can be sure they all come from one source. For blind conversion of whole repositories legacy documents use with caution.
Limitations:
- generated PDF files may not be longer than 1,000 pages; in case this it not enough think about combining with Tiffkit or ImageMagick for splitting TIFFs
- output PDF has a flat page tree ("linked list")
- only part of TIFF 6.0 specification is used
- only CCITT4 TIFFs are handled (use www.fastio.com's tiff2pdf, Tiffkit or ImageMagick to command-line convert from other formats)
- some functions I rarely use (e.g. nostretch) have not been tested extensively
- no support where the (rare) TIFF b/w inversion tag has been set
- no support for multistrip images (you will hideously only get blank files for those)
Currently c42pdf inherits Aladdin Free Public Licence from PDFlib

CDRDAO

2001.04.26.

CDRDAO
version: 1.1.4

http://www.ping.de/sites/daneb/index.html

CDRDAO v1.1.4 (last change Feb/18/01)
Disk-At-Once Recording of Audio and Data CD-Rs/CD-RWs
Cdrdao records audio or data CD-Rs in disk-at-once (DAO) mode based on a
textual description of the CD contents (toc-file).
Advantages of Disk-At-Once (DAO) Recording
Recording in disk-at-once mode writes the complete disc, i.e. lead-in, one
or more tracks and lead-out, in a single step. The commonly used
track-at-once (TAO) mode writes each track independently which requires link
blocks between two tracks. Older CD-recorder models forced a two second
pause (pre-gap) between two tracks whereas newer models allow adjusting of
the pause length in TAO mode reducing the number of link blocks to a minimal
amount. However, with TAO it is generally not possible to define the data
that is written in pre-gaps. But exactly this feature makes audio CD
recording interesting, e.g. by creating hidden bonus tracks or track intros
in pre-gaps like it is common habit on commercial CDs.
Finally, DAO recording is the only way to write data to the unused R-W
sub-channels for e.g. CD-G or CD-TEXT.
Features:
- Full control over length and contents of pre-gaps (pause areas between
tracks). Pre-gaps may be completely omitted, e.g. for dividing live
recordings into tracks.
- Control over sub-channel data like:
- catalog number
- copy, pre-emphasis, 2-/4-channel flags
- ISRC code
- index marks
- Support for exact audio, data and mixed mode CD copying.
- Tracks may be composed of different audio files supporting non destructive
cut.
- Accepts WAVE and raw audio files.
- CD-TEXT reading and writing with drives that support it.
- CDDB access to automatically create CD-TEXT data.
Platforms Reported to Work: FreeBSD Irix Linux Solaris HP-UX Win32 OS/2

JaD v1.5.8b
Jad - the fast JAva Decompiler
Jad is a Java decompiler, i.e. program that reads one or more Java class
files and converts them into Java source files which can be compiled again.
Jad is a 100% pure C++ program and it generally works several times faster
than decompilers written in Java.
Jad doesn't use the Java runtime for its functioning, therefore no special
setup is required (like changes to the CLASSPATH variable).
Jad can be used:
- for recovering lost source codes;
- for exploring the sources of Java runtime libraries;
- as a Java disassembler;
- as a Java source code cleaner and beautifier :).
Jad expects that supplied Java class files are valid ones, i.e. they can
pass the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) verification successfully.
The Jad main features:
- Enhanced readability of the generated source code.
- Ability to comment Java source code with JVM bytecodes. Useful for
verification and educational purposes.
- Full support for inner and anonymous classes.
- Fast decompilation and simple setup.
- Automatic conversion of identifiers garbled by Java obfuscators into valid
ones.
- Free for non-commercial use. If you would like to use Jad for commercial
purposes, please contact me for conditions.

LUA

LUA
version: 4.0.1

PUC-Rio TeCGraf
lua@tecgraf.puc-rio.br
http://www.tecgraf.puc-rio.br/lua/

LUA v4.0.1
Lua is a powerful, light-weight programming language designed for extending
applications. Lua is also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone
language. Lua is free software.
Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description
constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is
dynamically typed, interpreted from bytecodes, and has automatic memory
management with garbage collection, making it ideal for configuration,
scripting, and rapid prototyping.
A fundamental concept in the design of Lua is to provide meta-mechanisms for
implementing features, instead of providing a host of features directly in
the language. For example, although Lua is not a pure object-oriented
language, it does provide meta-mechanisms for implementing classes and
inheritance. Lua's meta-mechanisms bring an economy of concepts and keep the
language small, while allowing the semantics to be extended in
unconventional ways. Extensible semantics is a distinguishing feature of
Lua.
Lua is a language engine that you can embed into your application. This
means that, besides syntax and semantics, Lua has an API that allows the
application to exchange data with Lua programs and also to extend Lua with C
functions. In this sense, Lua can be regarded as a language framework for
building domain-specific languages.
Lua is implemented as a small library of C functions, written in ANSI C, and
compiles unmodified in all known platforms. The implementation goals are
simplicity, efficiency, portability, and low embedding cost. The result is a
fast language engine with small footprint, making it ideal in embedded
systems too.
Lua is freely available and can be used for both academic and commercial
purposes at absolutely no cost
Precompiled binaries for the current version are available for Unix and
Windows. There are also user-contributed binaries for the Macintosh, Acorn
RISC OS, EPOC, and BeOS.

NcFTP

NCFTP
version: 3.0.3

Mike Gleason
mgleason@ncftp.com
http://www.ncftp.com/ncftp/

NcFTP Client v3.0.3
NcFTP Client (also known as just NcFTP) is a set of FREE application
programs implementing the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). The current version
is: 3.0.3 (April 16th, 2000).
The program has been in service on UNIX systems since 1991 and is a popular
alternative to the standard FTP program, /usr/bin/ftp. NcFTP offers many
ease-of-use and performance enhancements over the stock ftp client, and runs
on a wide variety of UNIX platforms as well as operating systems such
Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X.
The purpose of ncftp is to provide a powerful and flexible interface to the
Internet standard File Transfer Protocol. It is intended to replace the
stock ftp program that comes with the system.
Although the program appears to be rather spartan, you'll find that ncftp
has a wealth of valuable performance and usage features. The program was
designed with an emphasis on usability, and it does as much as it can for
you automatically so you can do what you expect to do with a file transfer
program, which is transfer files between two interconnected systems.
Some of the cooler features include progress meters, filename completion,
command-line editing, background processing, auto-resume downloads,
bookmarking, cached directory listings, host redialing, working with
firewalls and proxies, downloading entire directory trees, etc., etc.
The ncftp distribution comes with the useful utility programs ncftpget(1)
and ncftpput(1) which were designed to do command-line FTP. In particular,
they are very handy for shell scripts. This version of ncftp no longer does
command-line FTP, since the main ncftp program is more of a browser-type
program.

PrePOP

2001.03.29.

PREPOP
version: 0.1 b7

Anders Rundegren
http://www.rundegren.com/software/

prepop v0.1b7
(GPL)
Requirements: Linux/Unix
A simple POP3 client for reading email. Works like an FTP session designed
for POP3. Very suitable for dialups and other slow connections. It lets you
read the text/plain part of your emails without having to download any
attachments (over dialups this can sometimes take a long time and during
this time you often have no idea on how much of the message is left to be
transferred). With prepop you can also see the size of all the messages when
you list them. You can't reply to messages since it was not designed to be a
replacement to your existing email client. It's more of a complementing
application doing some of the things your existing email client should have
handled in the first place. It doesn't change any flags on messages you
read, so if you later on fetch the messages with your existing mailclient,
it shows up as unread.
Features:
Send a POP3 command directly to the server.
Get a listing with common headers and sizes for all messages on server.
See headers normally not available in common email clients.
Read specified message(s) on server without downloading attachments.
Delete specified message(s) on server.
Bookmark all your different POP3 accounts.
A settings mode where you can customize prepop.
Online with the server until you logout or the session expires.
Ability to use a resource file (/etc/prepoprc and/or ~/.prepoprc).
Online help on all commands available for the different modes.
Uses the GNU readline library for efficient command line editing.
RFC 822, 1939, 2045, 2046, 2047, 2449 compliant, or so I hope.
Make sure you have GNU readline lib version 4.x or higher installed if you
decide to compile prepop on your own. This is because of some bugs in
readline 2.2.x which doesn't compile in C++ mode (prepop is written in C and
C++). The GNU readline lib version 4.0 has been statically linked in the

VIM

2001.05.19.

VIM
version:

Sven Guckes
guckes@vim.org
http://www.vim.org/

VIM (Vi IMproved)
VIM is an improved version of the editor "vi", one of the standard text
editors on UNIX systems.
VIM adds many of the features that you would expect in an editor: Unlimited
undo, syntax coloring, split windows, visual selection, graphical user
interface (read: menus, mouse control, scrollbars, text selection), and much
much more.
VIM runs on many operating systems: AmigaOS, AtariMiNT, BeOS, DOS, MacOS,
MachTen, OS/2, RiscOS, VMS, and Windows (95/98/NT4/NT5/2000) and, of course,
on UNIX in a lot of flavours
For those who use Windows - you can use Vim as your editor in other
programs, eg many users already use Vim as their editor within VisualStudio.
Vim comes in two parts: One archive holds the program (either as source or
binary/executable), and another archive holds the runtime files with the
documentation and syntax files. This allows you to update Vim as a program
without having to download the latest documentation.

XAudio SDK

2000.09.15.

XAUDIO SDK
version:

Xaudio SDK
The Xaudio SDK is our main product.
The Xaudio SDK is a very powerfull Software Development Tookit that allows
all programmers to add MP3 playback support directly in their applications
with very little effort.
Xaudio provides the most robust and fastest MP3 engine impementation on all
platforms, and is currently being used by hundreds of thousands of people
around the world.
The main features of the Xaudio SDK are:
Very fast: the fastest commercial MP3 decoding library in the world, up to
twice or three times faster than some other implementations.
Very Robust: the library has been very stable for almost 2 years, and is
very resilient to bad streams, errors, etc... It never crashes !
Supports all formats: the library will decode MPEG Audio Layers 1, 2 and 3
(MP1, MP2 and MP3), at all bitrates and frequencies as well as MPEG 2.5
extension bitstreams (lower sampling rates).
Same API on all platforms: develop your application only once, the exact
same API is used on Windows, Unix, Macintosh, BeOS, etc...
Fully re-entrant: the library can decode multiple streams in several threads
at the same time
Very modular: the SDK supports custom Input and Output plugin modules that
can be added on the fly by the client applications, as well as Input and
Output Filters.
Full Featured: the SDK comes with a lot of builtin input and output modules
ready to be used (HTTP, UDP and FTP network streaming, Windows WAVE or
DirectSound output modules, file output modules, etc...)
Extremely portable: the SDK runs on x86, Alpha, MIPS, HPPA, ARM, PowerPC,
Sparc, SH3 and other processors
Supports Integer Decode: a special integer-decode mode allows fast realtime
decoding even on CPUs without a floating point co-processor.
Flexible API: the SDK's API support both a high-level approach, with the
decoder running by itself in a separate thread/process, controlled via
messages, or a low-level synchronous decoding approach with precise control
over the decoding process and direct access to the bitstream and decoded
samples.
The SDK can be used from a variety of programming languages:
C, C++, Delphi , Visual Basic, Java, Scripting languages (Perl, Python,
etc...)
The SDK is free for individual use, and can be licensed for commercial
distribution.
The following platforms are supported:
Windows95/98/NT
Windows CE
Macintosh
Linux (x86, PowerPC, Alpha and ARM)
FreeBSD
Solaris (Sparc and x86)
Irix (5.3 and 6.x)
Digital Unix for Alpha (4.0)
BeOS
SCO OpenServer
AIX 4.x
