Glob v2.0 Beta 2 is available for download from our website.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updates Quick Look
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another small fix which occured only when unchecking Include .GLB file,
then checking Prompt for Disks would cause the program not to prompt for
each disk even though you checked it.

Also, the settings you choose for Maximum Memory would not be restored
each time you exited.

About Glob Archiver:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 5. It is a simple
utility which is used to break up large files into smaller files. This is
usually done to put the files on floppy disks, or to create smaller files to
download over the Internet. I used to use Arj alot, but I got sick of
remembering all the command line prompts to use it. So I wrote this program
in Visual C++ using MFC as my first real 'VC++/MFC' program. I also did it
becuase I wanted the routine to be quick, much quicker than VB would be able
to do.

The interface is constantly being developed, and made over. Since I am still
learning MFC, as I learn more about it, I add some new features to the
interface as well and new features I write.

Glob has been tested on Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0.

Any comments or requests are welcome. Even programming tips...

Installation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run setup, which will install the two necessary DLL's which are MFC42.DLL
and MSVCRT.DLL.

NOTE: If you plan on putting Glob on a floppy disk or whatever so that you
can use it somewhere else, don't forget to bring a copy of these two DLLs
also. Without these, Glob will not work. You can leave these two DLLs in
the same directory as Glob.exe if you do not want to copy them to the
\windows\system directory. This will also work.

Either that or you will need to bring the installation program and install
it on to each computer.

Revision Changes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version 0.1 to 1.0

* A status bar and tool bar were added.
* Added the Unpack command. Must Open a file, then Unpack.
* Can include the .GLB file with the first packed file (xxxx.001).
* The main view now displays information about the files.

Version 1.0 to 1.1

*  Added a Progress Bar
* Ability to pack to disks, or unpack from disks or other directories.
* A Standardized format for the .GLB file in both Text and Binary formats.
* If .GLB file is included, its file size will be assumed to be in 512
   byte clusters.

Version 1.1 to 1.2

* Added ability to define glob file sizes by Bytes, Kilobytes and Megabytes.
* Added cluster size settings for more flexability.
* User settings under the Options menu.
   * Adjust maximum amound of memory program can allocate.
   * Save window position and other settings.
* Double clicking .glb file from folder or desktop correctly opens the glob
file and allows you to unpack it.
* NO GLOB FILE SIZE RESTRAINTS. This has been long awaited I am sure.
* Added Zip Disks to the default sizes. This has been tested.

Version 1.2 to 1.21

* Fixed bug which made window placement drift on load-up.

Version 1.21 to 1.22

* Minor bug fixed with interface.

Version 1.22 to 1.23

* Minor bug fixed when unchecking Include .GLB file, then checking Prompt for
next disk. The program would not ask for next disk even though you checked
   it.
* Settings you choose for Maximum Memory would not be restored each time you
   exited.

NOTE: When selecting default disk sizes, such as Floppy or Zip Disk, the
program will automatically select a Predefined cluster size. Currently
Floppy disks default to 512 byte clusters and Zip Disks default to 2K
cluster sizes. (As my disks report). You can change these settings
however. But if you re-select Floppy or Zip Disk again, then the setting
will be reset to its default.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Start
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Create a Glob File:

Select File, then New. You will enter a name of the .glb file to
create. Next you will be prompted to select the source file to glob. This
is one file which you want to break up into smaller files. (You should use
WinZip or whatever utility to make the one packed file. I'm not writting a
compression tool, just a file breakup tool)

Next you will be prompted to enter the maximum size of each packed
file. The defalt setting is set at 1457664 bytes (entire floppy disk) but
you can select Zip Disk or the User Setting to enter any value you want.
By using the drop down list box, you can enter your file size in Bytes,
Kilobytes or Megabytes. The current limit is 4,294,967,295 bytes.
If you select Floppy Disk or Zip Disk, then the cluster size we
be automatically set in the Predefined combo box. If you don't know know
the cluster size, use the default or copy a 1 byte or whatever file to you
media/drive then right click the file and read it's properties. You will
see the file size if bytes and the bytes used. The cluster size is the
amount of bytes used. In a 1 byte file, on a 1K cluster size drive, this
1 byte file will occupy 1024 bytes.
There are 3 check boxes: Prompt After Each File, which will bring
up a message box telling you which disk to enter. This is used to packing
to floppy disks. Next is Text Glob Format. The new format defaults to the
binary format which is much smaller. I also did away with listing the files
and changed it to a number of files value. The previous glob file was in
text and with the cheezy format so I could debug it. The last box is
Include .GLB File. This will make the size of the first file smaller to
accomidate the .GLB file. If this is unchecked, then the first file will
be the exact size you selected. All other files are of the selected size
except for the last one, which could be smaller (obviously).

To Unpack a Glob File:

Select Open and select a Glob (.GLB) file to open. This will list
the source file and packed files in the window. From here, you need to
select Unpack to unpack the files. This was added so you could see the list
of files necessary to unpack the file. See formatting changes for next
version below.

Next you will select where you want to unpack the file to, and you
can change the name of the source file also.

When a file if not found, a message box will appear where you can
enter the path of where the file is located, or press the button with
three preiods "..." on it. This will bring up a simple folder find box.
I am working on creating a better template to show the files in each
directory also. But this will suffice for now. This box will allow you
to insert a new disk or select a new directory. It will also show the file
that it is looking for.

** This documentation was spit out, so don't expect it explain everything
fully. I will try to get some good/decent documentation done later... **

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Features to come in another version?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

 * May have option to include a simple auto-unpack .exe file as the
first glob file. This way you do not have to distribute the Glob
program. Yet you will not be able to pack with it (to save space
        in the glob files...)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Errors
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

 * Trying to add a New Glob Document from the desktop will only create
a blank .glb file. This will then error out if you double click
it and try to open it, since it is blank. This will hopefully be
	fixed soon.

globular@bigfoot.com or check out http://darkcities.com/globsoft/ for any
updates or fixes.

If anyone is interesed in a statically linked version, please e-mail me.
(With this you would not need to copy the MFC42.DLL to a disk when you
use Glob elsewere.)
