I.  INTRODUCTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bla (creator of Blaware and this document) decided to make this batch
program (9x Registry Revert) after having to manually (by typing commands at
a DOS prompt) restore the Windows 95 Registry a few times over the years.
This because Win95 didn't really provide any tools to do so.  Bla was not at
all satisfied with Windows 98's solution either:  SCANREG/SCANREGW (aka.
Registry Checker).  Anyway, Bla is quite happy with his own answer,
9xRegRev.bat, though it's a utility that he hopes he'll never have to use
(darn!).
II.  THE SKINNY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9x Registry Revert will, under Windows (protected-mode DOS), backup the
Win9x Registry. Under DOS (real-mode), it will offer a menu for Registry
revert (restoration).

Simple...the way it should be, hands-free and user-friendly.

III.  INSTALLING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note:  If upgrading from a previous version, simply deleting the existing
-----  files and folders and replacing them with the new is recommended.
> Bla's Suggested Setup   : probably the easiest way to set up the program
> ---------------------
   > Bla's Personal Setup : how Bla has it set up to run on his machines
   > --------------------
> Bla's Suggested Setup
> ---------------------
> Assemble the required apps and install them to one of the system's %PATH%
> directories (a directory included in the system's PATH statement--type
> "PATH" at a command prompt to see a list of these directories).  These
> required apps likely include:
>
>      DRVWRITE.BAT*     DLOCK2.EXE
>           RFN.BAT      EXPAND.EXE
>      YYYYMMDD.BAT      MD5SUM.EXE
>      BATCHMAN.COM     PKUNZIP.EXE
>      FREETEST.COM       PKZIP.EXE
>       LONGADD.COM      WINSET.EXE
>          NSET.COM
>
> Bla recommends installing (WINSET.EXE) to the "%windir%" directory, most
> likely (C:\Windows\).
>
> Of course, the required external programs that are part of MS-DOS (v7.xx)
> are already installed and should remain where they are [most likely in the
> (%windir%\Command\) directory].  Perhaps verify their existence.  These
> likely include:
>
>        CHOICE.COM        FIND.EXE
>        FORMAT.COM*      LABEL.EXE*
>          MODE.COM         MEM.EXE
>          MORE.COM        MOVE.EXE
>        ATTRIB.EXE     REGEDIT.EXE
>         DEBUG.EXE        SORT.EXE
>       DELTREE.EXE       START.EXE
>            FC.EXE       XCOPY.EXE
>
> (REGEDIT.EXE) is most likely located in the "%windir%" directory with...
>
>       NOTEPAD.EXE
>
> * Required for (MakeFlop.bat)
   > Bla's Personal Setup
   > --------------------
   > Bla piles all his external DOS apps (*.COM and *.EXE) that are used
   > frequently into his (C:\DOS\) directory.  All his batch programs
   > (*.BAT) are located in his (C:\BAT\) directory.  These two directories
   > are both included in the system's PATH statement [which is set in the
   > (AUTOEXEC.BAT) file].  The file (WINSET.EXE) was installed to the
   > (C:\Windows\) directory.
> Bla's Suggested Setup
> ---------------------
> Install the (9xRegRev.zip) package of files to the (C:\Bat\9xRegRev\)
> directory.  This directory will be created and used by (9xRegRev.bat)
> anyway, so what better place to install to?  These files include:
>
>      9xRegRev.bat     9xRegRev.nfo
>       Get_MD5.bat      Blaware.nfo
>      MakeFlop.bat      Editing.txt
>        Un_Reg.bat      History.txt
>       File_id.diz       Readme.txt
>      MD5_Sums.md5     Req_Apps.txt
>
> ...as well as the screenshots, (9xRRss01.png - 9xRRss13.png).
   > Bla's Personal Setup
   > --------------------
   > Bla has the (9xRegRev.zip) package of files installed to the
   > (C:\Bat\9xRegRev\) directory, except for the main program file,
   > (9xRegRev.bat), which he installed to the (C:\Bat\) directory.
> Bla's Suggested Setup
> ---------------------
> Run (9xRegRev.bat) from the (AUTOEXEC.BAT) file with a command such as:
>
>      [CALL C:\Bat\9xRegRev\9xRegRev.bat],
>
> and also from a shortcut placed in the Windows StartUp folder,
> (C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\).  Indeed, (9xRegRev.bat) must be
> run from under both (real-mode) DOS and Windows (protected-mode DOS)!
>
> Bla also recommends adding this line to the system's (CONFIG.SYS) file:
>
>      [SHELL=C:\PATH\TO\COMMAND.COM /E:32768 /P]
>
> This will make it so that (in general) batch programs have the maximum
> amount of environment space to work with when they are run.  [Of course,
> edit that line so it reflects the true path to (COMMAND.COM).]
   > Bla's Personal Setup
   > --------------------
   > Bla runs (9xRegRev.bat) under real-mode DOS with the command:
   >
   >      [CALL 9xRegRev], in the file (C:\Bat\_DosBats.bat).
   >
   > The (C:\Bat\_DosBats.bat) file (from which Bla launches many batch
   > programs) is run with the command:
   >
   >      [CALL _DosBats], in the system's (AUTOEXEC.BAT) file.
   >
   > Bla runs (9xRegRev.bat) under Windows (protected-mode DOS) with the
   > command:
   >
   >      [CALL 9xRegRev], in the file (C:\Bat\_WinBats.bat).
   >
   > The (C:\Bat\_WinBats.bat) file (which also runs many batch programs at
   > startup for Bla) is run via an entry in the Windows Registry here:
   >
   >      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
   >
   > The name of the string is "_WinBats" and it's data value is
   > "C:\Bat\_WinBats.bat".
   >
   > Bla also has this line in the system's (CONFIG.SYS) file:
   >
   >      [SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:32768 /P]
IV.  RUNNING VIA BOOT FLOPPY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If desired, the instance of (9xRegRev.bat) on the hard drive can be run from
a Win9x boot floppy disk [for the "revert" function of 9x Registry Revert
that occurs under real-mode DOS (with Windows NOT running)--not for the
"backup" function which occurs under protected-mode DOS (with Windows
running)]. Use (MakeFlop.bat) to create the boot floppy disk. There are
some technicalities to be made aware of. Please open (MakeFlop.bat) in a
text editor and read the "Notes" section for details and instructions.

V.  ISSUES
~~~~~~~~~~
If the program is displaying a "self-integrity check failed" error when run
(and you feel it really shouldn't be), it may be the case that an instance
of the program in another location is actually being used in the integrity
check.  If there are other instances of (9xRegRev.bat) lurking in other
locations, try either moving or renaming them.  That may solve the problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT:  When choosing an option at any of the program's on screen menus,
----------  please only press a key that is in the allowable key set as
            displayed on screen.  Pressing a key other than one of those
displayed on screen as options could produce results with unintended
consequences.                                                              !
VI.  LICENSE
~~~~~~~~~~~~
YOU MAY NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER.... Heehee,
just kidding. It's free, open, all that good stuff--hey, it's on your
computer, it must be yours! If you wish, change the code to launch nukes at
your enemies (no, no, don't even ponder that!). *** PEACE *** :)

VII.  UNINSTALLING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Run (Un_Reg.bat) to remove any stored Registry data related to 9x
   Registry Revert.  This must be done under Windows.
2) Disable or remove any commands that autorun (9xRegRev.bat), both under
   real-mode DOS and Windows (protected-mode DOS).
3) Delete the (C:\Bat\9xRegRev\) directory and it's contents.
4) Delete the (C:\Bat\) directory and it's contents, if appropriate (meaning
   if it's empty).
5) Delete (9xRegRev.bat) (if it hasn't already been deleted).
