*Level Description*

Retaliation picks up where Dark Operations left off. There will be no Xen or displacer in Retaliation. Action is the main theme. It will mainly be an encounter against military targets, but there is a healthy dose of aliens too. There will also be many sequences and a few puzzles to keep things interesting. Retaliation is the last of this series. Enjoy.

*Play Information*

Single Player :Yes.
Deathmatch :No.
Cooperative :No.
Difficulty Settings	:Yes.
New textures :No.
New sounds :No.
Running the level	:

Place pak1.pak in your Sierra/Half-Life/Gearbox directory. If there is already a pak1.pak there, rename Retaliation's pak1.pak to pak2.pak. Startup Opposing Force in console mode and type "skill X" (X being 1=easy, 2=medium, 3=difficult) and then type "map ret1".

(Warning: If you have Retaliation's and Dark Operations' pak in the same directory and if you attempt to play Dark Operations, some sounds and custom speeches probably won't work. To solve this, just temporarily move Retaliation's pak out of your Sierra/Half-Life/Gearbox directory).

Some of my beta testers experienced unusual effects while playing Retaliation in Hardware mode. Texture problems, disappearing brushes, speed problems, etc. Unfortunately, there is no real logical explanation or a fixable solution for them. I designed, played, and tested Retaliation repeatedly in Software mode. I recommend that you play it in Software mode. It will run great, even on older systems.

*Story*

This story takes place after the events in Dark Operations. You, Adrian Shephard and your buddies are traveling in an Osprey on the trip home to the Santego Military Base in Arizona. You just received the Medal of Honor from the president himself in Washington D.C. for your recent combat experience. Your superiors also mentioned a promotion to Sergeant and a two week leave. "Hey Tower, where's that five bucks you me, huh?", you say to the large grunt next to you. "Forget it man, I don't have it.", he replies. You smirk to yourself as the aircraft is suddenly rocked by an explosive impact. "What the hell was that?!", Tower yells. The fire on the right wing and the osprey's immediate dive to the ground tells you all too well exactly what happened. The osprey has been hit by a rocket. "Oh man, not again...", you whisper to yourself as you strap yourself in and pray for the best. "Hang on guys, I'll head for that nearby canyon!", the pilot yells back. The osprey dives at incredible speed. Everything happens in slow motion as it impacts on the ground. The osprey begins to disintegrate and parts fly everywhere. A couple of your buddies are thrown out of the sliding aircraft. Your head is knocked up against the bulkhead and everything goes black. You wake up dizzy and have a nasty headache. The pilot and everyone else seems to be dead. You hear someone laughing not far away. Someone is gloating over the death of your buddies. The sound of it makes your blood boil. You pull out your trusty Ka-Bar knife and head for the source of the laughter.

The Black Ops and their U.S. marine traitor allies are laying siege to the Santego Military Base, your base. Its remote location prevents anyone else from knowing about the attack. Communications have been disabled. There is little chance of help or rescue. Your comrades are mounting a strong defense, but they are heavily outnumbered and outgunned. Many of them have already been slain. It's time to join the fight. It's time to act. It's time to retaliate.

*Additional Notes*

Despite what happened in Dark Operations, scientists and security guards will be your allies. Don't shoot them, you'll need them.

Once again I included your old nemeses from Half-life, the military grunts. I mainly did this to break up the monotony of fighting Black Ops male assassins. Show them the same courtesy as you would the Black Ops. A healthy dose of lead is suggested.

The ally grunts that you will meet will not always follow you well. I did what I could to prevent this, but the following AI in OpFor has its limitations. Not only is this frustrating to you the player, but to me as well. Just be patient with them.

I have noticed for some reason that the ally grunts will sometimes turn on you after a battle. It's probably a bug within their AI. Be especially careful when using explosives or snarks around them.

*Tips*

When in doubt, shoot it.

Check out the dark green military crates that you come across for weapons and ammo.

Soda from the vending machines can restore health. The caffeine will help keep you going.

*Hints* Don't read these unless you have to.

Second map:

Grab the security card in the Diplomatic Relations office to be able to enter the armory.

Third map:

Go through the vent in the hall near the rocket turret. It will lead you to a SAW.

Fourth map:

Use the barnacle gun on the spore growth of the ceiling to cross the broken path. If you attach to it and jump you can do a Tarzan swing that will easily get you across.

Sixth map:

Push the blue crate over to the broken beam. Jump on top of the rubble and walk up the beam. When you're on the roof walk over to the manhole to get back inside.

To open up the security door activate the switch on the other side.

You can find Barney trapped in a room with wooden boards. Break him out and lead him to the locked door so he can open it. Don't let him get killed before he opens the door.

To take out the Bradley IFV aim for the rotating gun turret. It's the only part that is vulnerable. All weapons are capable of doing damage to it, even bullets. To avoid being shot at by the IFV, stay close to it and attack it from there.

Eighth map:

In addition to explosives, the SAW and sniper rifle work well on the female assassins. That is, if you can get them to hold still.

Tenth map:

Explosives like the rocket launcher and AR grenades work especially well against the Garg if you choose to fight him.

Twelfth map:

To take out the Black Ops osprey, shoot it repeatedly with rockets or with the gauss gun. I believe other weapons do damage, but not as much. Apparently, the most vulnerable parts are the belly or the nose of the aircraft. It can be shot down when it's dropping off Black Ops or when it's flying around in the distance.

Bring the torch grunt over to the green door by the helipad and he'll open it for you. Make sure he doesn't get killed before he has a chance to open the door. It's a good idea to keep him out of the fighting altogether.

Thirteenth map:

To take out the mortar, target the exposed wires of the power box. A couple shots from the sniper rifle works well.

To enter the base, you have to turn on the power for the door first. Activate the switch in the fenced area to do so.

Fourteen A map:

To restore power to the generator, you have to pump the water out of the room first. The pump wheel is unusable. To start up the pump, break through the glass and destroy both cables.

To help you get past the electrified puddle, push the nearby tan crate into the water and use it to jump across.

Fifteenth map:

To get into the comm room, destroy the camera watching the door.

IF YOU DOWNLOAD AND PLAY THIS LEVEL PLEASE E-MAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF IT. I know most of you won't, but I want the input. After all the work I've spent on this, I think that's more than fair. All comments and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
