Last modified 3/8/95 ENHANCED IDE SOFTWARE ===================== Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 do not support use of 32-bit Disk Access mode on Enhanced IDE hard disk drives (drives larger than 528MB or with more than 1024 cylinders) without use of a special driver. To provide full functionality of our systems with larger capacities and Windows 3.11, Toshiba has developed a Windows driver to support 32-bit Disk Access for use with these models. Download EIDE32.EXE from the `Toshiba Software' library (LIB 2) if you have one of these models and want to use the 32-bit Disk Access mode. EIDE32.EXE contains the enhanced IDE software driver and an automated installation program (SETUP.BAT). The driver allows 32-bit disk access for hard drives larger than 528MB in Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups 3.1x. NOTE: To gain maximum disk performance you should enable 32-bit disk and file access after installing the FAST Disk Driver. Please see the section "Enabling 32-bit Disk and File Access" below for more instructions. SPECIAL NOTE FOR T4850CT USERS ============================== In addition to the installation steps covered below, T4850CT users must also add a line line to the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI which reads: DEVICE=VCACHE.386 VCACHE.386 is already in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory of the pre-installed T4850. If this line isn't added to SYSTEM.INI then attempts to enter the virtual memory section results in a error: "32-bit File Access was unable to run. This may be because you started the network before starting Windows, because Windows could not find the IFSHLP.SYS driver, or your hard disk(s) may be incompatible with 32-bit File Access." SPECIAL NOTE FOR QEMM USERS =========================== The following QEMM switches have been reported to be required in order to use QEMM's Stealth mode with Toshiba's EIDE 32-bit Disk Access driver. ST:M XBDA:N X=FE00-FEFF The Quarterdeck also has a device driver available that is recommended for use with any EIDE Windows drivers. The filename in the QUARTERDECK Forum libraries is 32BDA.ZIP. This file includes a thorough explanation of the issues relating to use of QEMM with 32-bit Disk Access drivers for use with EIDE drives. INSTALLATION OF TOSHIBA'S EIDE FAST DISK DRIVER =============================================== Using SETUP to Install the Fast Disk Driver ------------------------------------------- 1. Copy the files extracted from EIDE32.EXE to the root directory of a formatted diskette in the A: drive. 2. At a DOS prompt, run the installation program: a:\setup and follow the instructions given there. SETUP should automatically install the driver. If for some reason there is a problem, you can perform the installation manually: NOTE: The installation program (SYSINI.EXE) _requires_ that the software be installed from a diskette in the A: drive. Manually Installing the Fast Disk Driver ---------------------------------------- 1. At a DOS prompt, copy the driver to your windows directory. For example: copy a:\toshctrl.386 c:\windows\system 2. Edit your SYSTEM.INI file to enable the new driver. For example: a. At the DOS prompt, type CD \WINDOWS and press ENTER. b. Type EDIT SYSTEM.INI and press ENTER. c. In the [386Enh] section add the following lines: 32bitDiskAccess=OFF device=*int13 device=toshctrl.386 d. To save the file first press ALT+F, then press S. e. To exit the editor first press ALT+F, then press X.
