1.0 Introduction to the Compaq Survey Utility for NetWare
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Compaq Survey Utility is an online information gathering agent that runs
on servers, gathering critical hardware and software information from various
sources, saving it as a history of multiple sessions. It was developed to
allow you to resolve problems without taking the server off-line and to assist
in maximizing server availability.

The Compaq Survey Utility includes a web browser interface in addition to
the command-line interface. This enables remote control of the utility and
facilitates easy transfer of survey information from remote machines to a
service provider.

The information the Compaq Survey Utility gathers is accessible from two locations:

    - locally at the host server console (Survey.txt)
    - remotely or locally from a browser.

You can use the Compaq Survey Utility to perform the following functions:

    - View the hardware and software configuration of the machine.
    - Compare historical configurations of the machine.
    - Capture a new configuration sample.
    - Download the Configuration History File (survey.idi) from the device
to your local machine (for mailing to a service provider).
    - Analyze a configuration file from another machine.

The Compaq Survey Utility for NetWare installs in the SYS:SYSTEM
directory, saves its captured information in binary form in
SYS:SYSTEM\SURVEY.IDI, and outputs reports to SYS:SYSTEM\SURVEY.TXT and
to requesting web browsers.

The Survey Utility is normally installed to run at boot-up and on specified
time intervals. This helps to ensure that the latest information and change
history are always recorded and available when needed. You can modify the
data gathering interval by modifying the command line parameters.

3.0 Installing the Compaq Survey Utility
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: The Compaq Survey Utility for NetWare installs in the SYS:SYSTEM
directory.

Install from Compaq SmartStart 3.00 or later:

For new NetWare server SmartStarts, the Compaq Survey Utility for NetWare
will be preselected to automatically install during the SmartStart
    process.

For servers with NetWare already installed, the Compaq Survey Utility can be
installed from the Compaq Management CD, from a Softpaq, or from the Compaq
Integration Maintenance Utility. These are all online installs and do not
require a reboot.

Install from the Compaq Management CD:

To install the Survey Utility from the Compaq Management CD on a
NetWare server, enter the following at the console:

       LOAD [CD_DRIVE:]\Survey\NetWare\Sinstall -iAUTO_INST

The -iAUTO_INST command line parameter will cause the Survey Utility to
load automatically on every boot, and take snapshots every boot and
every Wednesday at noon. If the target server does not have a CD drive,
use Diskette Builder to create a Survey Utility diskette.

Install from a Softpaq:

To install the Survey Utility from a Softpaq, download the Softpaq
executable into a temporary directory and run the Softpaq executable.
It will expand the software into the temporary directory. Copy the
files to a diskette (or to a file share on the target server). At the
    NetWare system prompt enter:

        Load a:\Sinstall -iAUTO_INST

This will cause the Survey Utility to automatically load every time
you boot the server, and take snapshots every Wednesday at noon.

Install from the Compaq Integration Maintenance Utility:

To install the Survey Utility on a NetWare server through the
Compaq Integration Maintenance Utility, you must have set up the
server using SmartStart. Once the server is set up, enter the following
    at the NetWare system prompt:

        Load CPQMAINT

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.0 Theory of Operation
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Compaq Survey Utility captures data as sessions, where a session is
defined as an organized group of data describing the configured state of
the system at a specific point in time. The Compaq Survey Utility will
keep up to 10 distinct sessions. The sessions are organized as three
distinct types: Original, Checkpoints, and Active. The Original session
(referenced as session number 2) is nothing more than the first session
sampled. The Compaq Survey Utility will treat this session as a "master
configuration" and it will never be overwritten by the utility. The
Checkpoint sessions (referenced as session numbers 3 to 10) are the next
8 samples that "differ significantly" from the previous session. These
sessions are maintained in a "first in, first out" (FIFO) fashion and may
be deleted as the number of Checkpoints increases. The "significance" of
a Checkpoint is determined programmatically based on the type of information
captured. An attempt is made to only generate a Checkpoint when something
that would not change under normal operation of the server is changed. So,
not all items that change will generate Checkpoints. The Active session
(referenced as session number 1) is the last information captured. This
session is overwritten each time a sample is taken. The session
information is maintained in a file called SURVEY.IDI in the same directory
as the executable portion of the program. This file contains all of the
binary information captured for every session. This file can be analyzed
locally by the Survey Utility, or it can be sent to another location such
as a help center or to Compaq where the Survey Utility can generate custom
reports on the information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.0 Running the Compaq Survey Utility
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the Compaq Survey Utility is installed, it (by default) gathers
data at periodic intervals, and at every power-on.

If you want the Compaq Survey Utility to perform a one-time immediate
collection on a NetWare server, you need to unload the utility, then
reload it. Enter the following at the NetWare system prompt:

    1. Unload Survey
    2. Load Survey

    report in the Data frame on the right. Click a tree item to open it;
the report in the Data Frame on the right is positioned to place the
selected data at the top of the window. All data in the report remains
    available in the data window.

The keyboard can also be used to navigate the tree applet. Use the up
and down arrows to navigate vertically through the tree. Use the right
arrow to open a branch or subfolder. After 1 second of inactivity, the
data window is automatically repositioned to the selected item.

  Data Frame

The Data Frame comprises the remainder of the browser window and is used
for setting configuration options or displaying a Survey Utility Report.

Survey Utility Options:

The Options page of web-enabled Compaq Survey Utility displays all
captured Survey sessions and allows you to control the utility from a
browser to perform the following functions:

  - Select different Configuration History files
  - Select Primary and Compare Session
  - Download the Configuration History File
  - Select a Report Type
  - Generate a new report
  - Capture a new configuration sample

  Select Different Configuration History Files

Use this option to select, for analysis, configuration history files
    retrieved from other machines.

NOTE: This option does not appear unless configuration history files
have been placed manually in the \COMPAQ\SURVEY\IDIFILES directory. This
option can be used on a Windows 95 or NT 4.0 machine by copying
configuration history files from other machines to the local machine
for analysis. You can then point the browser to the local machine,
select alternate configuration history files, and run reports.

Perform the following steps to select different configuration history
    files:

    1. Click "Select different Configuration History file(s)". The
Configuration History Files screen displays the available files.
    2. Select the files you want to use for comparison.
    3. Click "Done". The Options screen displays with a list of sessions
from the selected Configuration History files.

  Select Primary and Compare Session

Compaq Survey Utility captures data as sessions; a session is defined
as an organized group of data describing the configured state of the
system at a specific point in time. Each Survey Utility Report can
compare two sessions. You can specify the Primary and Compare sessions
to be included in the report. The selected Compare Session is compared
    to the selected Primary Session.

    1. Select the Primary session to be included in the report.
    2. Select the Compare session to be included in the report.
NOTE: If you select View Primary Session Only, no Compare session
will be included in the report.

  Download the Configuration History File

You may want to download the Configuration History File for local
analysis or for mailing to a Service Provider.

Click the download icon next to the C:\COMPAQ\SURVEY\Survey.IDI or
SYS:SYSTEM\Survey.IDI link to download the Configuration History file
from the device to your local machine. The browser prompts you for a
    location to store Survey.IDI.

NOTE: If you save the file in the \COMPAQ\SURVEY\IDIFILES directory,
then the local Survey Utility can use the file.

  Select Report Type

Use the list box to select the type of report you want to view. The
    types of reports offered are:

    - Show Only Major Differences
Generate a comparison output, only showing information that caused
a checkpoint. A checkpoint is determined programmatically as an
item that was "significantly different" from the previous session.

    - Show All Differences
Generate a comparison output, only showing information that
was different between sessions. In most cases, information
exists in the sessions that is transient in nature (i.e.
number and type of processes running and this level of report
generation displays these differences in addition to those
        reported by the Checkpoint level.)

    - Show Standard Detail and Differences
Generate a comparison output, showing summary level information.
Summary information is most appropriate for configuration
management because it shows the system configuration in abbreviated
        form.

    - Show More Detail and Differences
Generate a comparison output, showing advanced level information
(default). Advanced information is considered expert level and is
most appropriate for problem resolution because it is considerably
        more detailed than summary information.

    - Show All Detail and Differences
Generate a comparison output, showing expert level information.
The Expert level is the most extensive user level of information
available. In typical situations, it is not necessary to provide
this level of information. But in some cases, the information
contained in this level may not have been interpreted for a lower
        report level.

  Generating a New Report

Click the "New Report" button to generate and display a Survey Utility
Report based on the selected sessions and report type.

  Capturing a New Configuration Sample

If you installed the Survey Utility through the SmartStart setup
process, by default it gathers information every Wednesday at noon,
and at every power-on. If you installed the Survey Utility from the
Compaq Integration Maintenance Utility or the Compaq Management CD and
did not add additional command line parameters, by default it gathers
information every Sunday at midnight and at every power-on. You can
change the Compaq Survey Utility data gathering interval using command
line parameters. You can also force a one-time, immediate collection by
    capturing a new configuration sample.

To capture a new configuration sample, click the "New Configuration
    Sample" button.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.0 Modifying the Data Gathering Interval on a NetWare Server
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can modify the Compaq Survey Utility data gathering interval using
command line parameters. The data gathering interval set by a SmartStart
installation is Wednesday at noon with the Compaq Survey Utility taking
samples once every 7 days and at every power-on.

The command line parameter for the data gathering interval is:

    SURVEY -c[[dow.hour],nd]

where:
-c Continuous collection. A -c by itself will set the data
gathering interval to once a day at midnight.
dow Day of the week (default: Sunday). The day of the week is
entered as one of the following keywords:
Today, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
                   Friday or Saturday
The keywords may be entered as any mixture of upper or
lower case and the number of characters required to
recognize the keyword is based on whether the letters
are unique to the keyword. For example, "-cs" would
not be valid because of a conflict with Saturday and
Sunday, but "-csu" would be valid.
hour Hour of day (default: 0). The hour of the day is entered
as a number from 0 to 23, where 0 is midnight.
nd Number of days (default: 1). The number of days is used to
specify the interval between samples. To specify a weekly
                 interval use "7".

NOTE: The Compaq Survey Utility runs on a 24 hour clock.

To modify the data gathering interval on a NetWare server, follow these
steps at the NetWare system prompt:

    1. If the Compaq Survey Utility is already loaded, enter UNLOAD SURVEY.
    2. Enter LOAD SURVEY, followed by the desired '-c' command line options.

For example, to set the data gathering interval to every Friday at
6:00 PM, taking samples every 7 days (once a week), enter:

        LOAD SURVEY -cFriday.18,7

To set the data gathering interval to Friday at 6:00 PM, taking samples
once every 28 days (roughly once a month), enter:

        LOAD SURVEY -cFriday.18,28

If you shut down the NetWare server, the data gathering interval goes
back to what it was prior to the change. For the new gathering interval
to remain effective when you shut down the server, update the command
    line parameters in the AUTOEXEC.NCF.

It is recommended that the sample interval be in multiples of 7 so that
the utility will run at the same time each week. This will make the
    sample time more predictable.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.0 Generating Custom Reports
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Compaq Survey Utility outputs reports into SURVEY.TXT. You can find
this file in the SYS:SYSTEM directory.

If a significant change occurs between collections, the previous information
is marked, and SURVEY.TXT is overwritten to reflect the latest configuration
and changes from the original configuration.

By running the Survey Utility with different command line parameters, you can
change the contents of the SURVEY.TXT file.

The optional command line parameters are listed below:
-oX[,Y] Generate a single session or comparison output of sessions
                 X and Y as a report in SURVEY.TXT. If "Y" is specified a
delta report is generated with "X" considered as the basis
for comparison. The delta report will contain all of the
information from session "X" with the addition of
information that was added, removed or changed in session
"Y". The additional information is marked with either a
"(+)" indicating this item was added or "(-)" indicating
this item was removed. A changed item will be indicated
with a "(+)" showing an addition and a "(-)" showing the
previous item or value. The default is to generate a
comparison report between the most recent session and the
original session. The most recent session can be referred
to as session 0. The original session is session 2.
-fCheckpoint Generate a comparison output, only showing information that
caused a checkpoint. A checkpoint is determined
programmatically as an item that was "significantly
different" from the previous session. See "A Word About
Sessions". When generating a report through the browser,
this report is referred to as "Show Only Major Differences".
-fDifference Generate a comparison output, only showing information that
was different between sessions. It is important to note
that in most cases information will exist in the sessions
that is transient in nature (i.e. number and type of
processes running and this level of report generation will
display all of these differences in addition to those
reported by the Checkpoint level. See "A Word About
Sessions." When generating a report through the browser,
this report is referred to as "Show All Differences".
-fSummary Generate a comparison output, showing summary level
information. The summary level information is an abreviated
form of the information. It is useful to get a quick look
at a system configuration and is most appropriate for
configuration management. See "A word about Sessions".
When generating a report through the browser, this report is
referred to as "Show Standard Details and Differences".
-fAdvanced Generate a comparison output, showing advanced level
information (default). The advanced level information is
the default level and information detail is considerably
more indepth than the Summary level. This and the Expert
level are the most useful for problem resolution. See
"A Word About Sessions". When generating a report through
the browser, this report is referred to as "Show More
                 Details and Differences".
-fExpert Generate a comparison output, showing expert level
information. The Expert level provides extensive user
level information. In typical situations, it would not be
necessary to provide this level of information.
But in some cases the information contained in this level
may not have been interpreted for a lower report level.
When generating a report through the browser, the information
available via the Statistics level provides the functionality
through the "Show All Details and Differences" option. Thus
this level is only relevant to the Survey.TXT file output.
-fStatistics Generate a comparison output, showing statistics level
information. The Statistics level is the most extensive user
level of information available. In typical situations, it
would not be necessary to provide this level of information.
But in some cases the information contained in this level
may not have been interpreted for a lower report level.
When generating a report through the browser, this report
is referred to as "Show All Details and Differences".
-r Disable remote access (Do not load web browser support.)
-wX Wait "X" minutes before taking initial sample after program
                 startup.
-? List available command line parameters

If you enter

    LOAD SURVEY -o3,2

no snapshot is taken and a new SURVEY.TXT is generated based on the comparison
of sessions 3 and 2. If you enter

    LOAD SURVEY -o3,2 -fCheckpoint

a new SURVEY.TXT is generated showing only the information that caused a
checkpoint between sessions 3 and 2.

Use any text editor to view or print SURVEY.TXT.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
9.0 Unloading and Uninstalling the Compaq Survey Utility
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do not want to use the Compaq Survey Utility, you can unload it.

To unload the Survey Utility from a NetWare server:

    1. At the NetWare system prompt enter:

        UNLOAD SURVEY

    2. Then remove the "Load Survey" command line from the AUTOEXEC.NCF
file. This prevents the Survey Utility from running automatically
each time power is turned on.

To UnInstall the Compaq Survey Utility, at the NetWare system prompt enter:

    LOAD Sinstall -uninstall

This will unload the Survey.nlm process if running, delete all Survey
program files, and remove the Survey command line from the
    AUTOEXEC.NCF file.

The Survey data files will be left in the SYS:System directory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
10.0 A Sample Report
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

An abbreviate sample of a SURVEY.TXT file is provided below. Note that a
'(+)' indicates a current state in the primary session, and a '(-)' indicates
a previous state in the comparison session.

Example:
______________________________________________________________________________
Bus Architecture
System Board .......................... Compaq ProSignia 300 Server
 Slot 1 EISA ........................... [empty]
 Slot 2 EISA ........................(+) Compaq NetFlex-3/E Controller
                                     (-) [empty]
 Slot 3 EISA ........................(+) [empty]
                                     (-) Board Id[TCO3147]
 Slot 4 EISA/PCI ....................... Compaq Integrated NetFlex-L ENET/PCI
                                         Controller
______________________________________________________________________________

The example above shows several things which changed. The first '(+)'
indicates that a NetFlex-3/E board is now installed in slot 2. The '(-)'
on the following line indicates that the slot was previously empty. The
next '(+)' indicates that slot 3 is now empty. The '(-)' indicates that
a Thomas Conrad 3147 board has previously in the slot.

A complete sample of the SURVEY.TXT report is provided below. The default
information detail filter level is set to ADVANCED. This report has the
detail filter level set to EXPERT to show the different levels of information
available.
