Introduction:

The hp StorageWorks modular SMART array 1500 cs Flash Utility RPM
installation file contains a bundled firmware flash utility. This
     bundle includes the following firmware:

     - MSA1500 cs Firmware: Version 4.82
     - MSA20 Firmware: Version 1.22
     - Fan Control Module Firmware: N/A

This utility supports the following operating systems:
Red Hat Linux EL 2.1 (AS, ES)
Red Hat Linux EL 3 (AS, ES, WS)
SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 (SLES 8)

Use of the software is subject to the enclosed hp software license terms

NOTE:

    * This MSA 1500 Flash Utility supercedes the 4.82-0 MSA 1500 Flash. This
package does not upgrade the Fan Control Module Firmware.

    * Any previous version of MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility should be uninstalled.
The command 'rpm -e msa1500flash' will accomplish this.

    * Be sure to read, understand and follow all instructions and dialog box
text. It is very important to follow all prompts regarding mandatory
      power-cycling.

***IMPORTANT NOTES and SERVICE CONSIDERATIONS***

    * After flashing the MSA 1500 cs with any firmware, the controller shelf
and -ALL- attached drive cabinet hardware must be power-cycled.

    * Prior to flashing the MSA 1500 cs, ensure that all controller shelves,
drive enclosures, switches and other necessary SAN devices are powered
      up and functioning correctly.

    * If you have received the MSA 1500 cs controller shelf without a
controller, and you will be providing your own controller with MSA 1000
      firmware, then follow these instructions:

      1) Un-Install any previous versions of the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility
      2) Install this version of the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility
      3) Select the MSA 1500 cs device that has the older firmware version.
      4) Select the button labeled 'Flash Active/Standby Controller' and
      proceed with the flash operation.
      5) When the flash operation completes successfully, then power-cycle the
MSA 1500 cs and all attached drive cabinets.
      6) When the power-cycled MSA 1500 cs reboots, click the 'Find Devices'
      button.
      7) Look at the box labeled 'Bundled Firmware Versions' and compare the
firmware versions to what is displayed for that MSA 1500 cs.
      8) If the firmware versions are not up-to-date, then press button
'Recommended: Flash All Bundled Firmware . . .' and once the flash
operation is completed, power-cycle the MSA 1500 cs and all attached
      drive cabinets.
      9) If there are any Flash Utility dialog boxes that display errors, then
power-cycle the MSA 1500 cs and all attached drive cabinets. Try the
flash operation again. If these errors persist, then try power-cycling
the server that the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility is installed on and
      retry the flash operation.

    * If you have received the MSA 1500 cs controller shelf with one controller
and you will be optionally providing your own redundant controller, then
      follow these instructions:

      1) Un-Install any previous versions of the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility
      2) Install this version of the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility
      3) Select the MSA 1500 cs that you wish to upgrade. Look at the box
labeled 'Bundled Firmware Versions' and compare the firmware versions to
what is displayed for that MSA 1500 cs.
      4) If the firmware versions are not up-to-date, then press button
'Recommended: Flash All Bundled Firmware . . .' and once the flash
operation is completed, power-cycle the MSA 1500 cs and all attached
      drive cabinets.
Ensure that
the correct firmware versions are displayed. If not, then re-flash this
      MSA 1500 cs.
      8) If there are any Flash Utility dialog boxes that display errors, then
power-cycle the MSA 1500 cs and all attached drive cabinets. Try the
flash operation again. If these errors persist, then try power-cycling
the server that the MSA 1500 cs Flash Utility is installed on and
      retry the flash operation.

    * MSA 1500 cs and the MSA20 and firmware can be upgraded on a per
device-group basis. That is, flashing the MSA20 firmware will upgrade
the firmware for all MSA20s attached to the selected MSA 1500 cs
controller. This is the same for the MSA 1500 cs firmware. After each
firmware upgrade, a complete power-cycle of all attached devices must
      be done.
