Subj: Sprint PCS Data: Trouble w/ Some Services?

From: Timothy Sipples <tsipple@us.iNoSPAMbm.com>

For what it's worth, I (briefly) tried using the data cable that comes with
Denso's SIM-100 software for the Sprint PCS Touchpoint. (The Sprint PCS
store incorrectly sold me the wrong kit, it seems -- the cable is correct,
but that's about it.)

I used an IBM ThinkPad running OS/2 Warp Version 4 and configured a modem
profile using very basic AT commands. That seemed to work fine.

I had trouble connecting to the IBM Global Network Internet dial-up numbers
but had no trouble connecting to a GTE aviation-related dial-up service.

I'd be grateful if anyone can verify those results.

The IBM modem dial-up numbers that didn't work (resulting in "NO CARRIER" by
itself or immediately after a "CONNECT" message):
  800-590-4857
  312-705-3301

The GTE modem dial-up number that did work (resulting in "CONNECT" and a
steady connection):
  800-767-9989

I didn't try sending a fax. I returned the kit to the store.

Someone else posted here [a.c.spcs] a day or two ago about having
problems connecting to MindSpring, as well. (I answered him back in
email.)

IBM and MindSpring both use 3Com modems at most POPs -- I am starting
to wonder if there is something weird going on between the modems at
the SPCS end and 3Com modems. HOWEVER, IIRC the modems at the SPCS
end _ARE_ 3Com! Plus the person who reported trouble with MindSpring
was able to connect to one MindSpring number served by 3Com modems OK
but not to two others (AFAIK MindSpring has the exact same hardware
and software configuration at two of the three POPs in question.) I
also had him test a former Netcom, now ICG, POP and he connected OK.
IIRC ICG uses Cisco or Lucent equipment at that POP (they have 3Com
equipment at some others.)

From: "Sergio Mainetti Jr." <mainetti@visionnaire.com.br>

  Hello.
I'm working in a project to look for Y2K problems in an OS/2
TCP/IP stack.

I'm working with OS/2 version 3.0 and up and using the TCP/IP
stack from Netmanage's PC/TCP (formerly FTP Software's PC/TCP).

Does anyone know, or have had, any problems with dates with this
environment ?

  Best regards,

From: Joseph <josco@ibm.net>

I don't have a good answer.

I knew Netmanage engineers and don't recall them making or reselling a
TCP/IP stack for OS/2 -- I would have gotten one instead of buying Warp 3.0
Connect. I assume you are using their DOS TCP/IP stack in an OS/2 DOS VM.
I would seek help on the TCP/IP stack from Netmange (not sure how they have
faired in the past few years given they were basically sellling a TCP/IP
stack and tool sfor Windows3.1).

IBM's TCP/IP stack is documented on thier Y2K site. It's found with a
search on the main IBM web site. If you are running WARP Connect then
there is a possibility of using a Y2K compliant OS/2 TCP/IP stack in a DOS
or Windows VM. I have found help at Judy's Warped World.

She has links to getting OS/2 and TCP/IP running in DOS and iwndows
sessions.

you can try the ftp sites.

service.boulder.ibm.com
software.boulder.ibm.com

eventually you will get to a directory after /warp4/fixes/en_us which has
fp5 as well as the current fp 12. be sure to read the readme if you have
never done this before and you also need the csf tool to unload the fixpak
and install it.

That would indicate that you are running Warp 4 without Fixpack 5 or
higher. You MUST be at FixPack 5 or higher to install Netscape 4.61. Read
Readme.icn from the distribution package. It states:

1.0 HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
__________________________________________________________________

This section contains information on the minimum hardware and software
required to run Netscape Communicator 4.61. If you plan to install and use
the Developer Kits with Netscape Communicator 4.61, you might need to
consider additional hardware and software requirements. See the minimum
hardware and software requirements for the version of the Developer Kits
you have or plan to have installed.

1.1 Minimum hardware requirements
------------------------------------------------------------------

To install and use Netscape Communicator 4.61, your workstation needs at
least:

  o A 486 microprocessor (a Pentium(R) or compatible
microprocessor at 90 MHz or higher provides better
    results)

o A VGA display (65536 colors or higher provides better
    results)

o 16 MB of RAM (32 MB or higher provides better results)

o 13 MB free hard disk space and 24 MB of temporary disk space

o A connection to the Internet (modem, ISDN, or LAN)

1.2 Minimum software requirements
------------------------------------------------------------------

Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 is supported on the following:

  o OS/2 Warp 4

  o OS/2 Warp Server Version 4.0

  o OS/2 Warp Server Advanced Version 4.0

o OS/2 Warp Server Advanced SMP Feature

  o OS/2 Warp Server for e-business

  o WorkSpace On-Demand 2.0

1.3 Required FixPaks and updates
------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending on your operating system, the following FixPaks or
updates might be required. To download FixPaks or Corrective
Service Diskette levels, go to the IBM(R) FixPak Database
Web site at http://service5.boulder.ibm.com/pspfixpk.nsf.

No FixPaks are required for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business and WorkSpace
On-Demand 2.0.

  1.3.1 OS/2 Warp 4
  ----------------------------------------------------------------

FixPak 5 or higher is required.

  1.3.2 OS/2 Warp Server
  ----------------------------------------------------------------

So, I suggest you read the fine manual (RTFM) and apply FixPack 5 or
higher to your Warp 4.

Since the fixpacks are cumulative, what you need is any fixpack from 5 up.

As far as I known IBM websites are THE place for getting these things.
"Sucks" is probably an overreaction.

Subj: HyperACCESS for OS/2 crashes sound system

From: vbien@ibm.net (Victor Bien)

HA somehow corrupts the sound system. After two or more
startups (of HA) and closes (I run my machine 24h/d and it may not
be rebooted for weeks on end), sooner or later it causes
\MMOS2\DLL\MMPM.dll to commit an access violation. Thereafter the
sound system stops working. What's more the whole operating system
becomes unstable and is prone to hangup. This was not a problem in
the past before I don't know when (maybe after installing some FP).

This happens regardless of whether HA is setup to use multimedia sound
or only use the beeper.

I did a reinstall of HA but this did not clear the problem.

I can duplicate the access violation and report all the register
info if necessary.

My system is a Kingston Turbo chip souped up Micronics 486 with
64MB running Warp 3 + FP39. I haven't had time to see if later
Fixpacks would address this problem.

I have queried Hilgraeves direct but have received no reply.

  Any comments appreciated.
