Hi, I hate to reply to myself but just found an error in
the makefile, as bellow, I removed the '-c' don't know where
that came from, also found that although the makefile did not generate a
exe file
if I called the compiler with both file names it worked, but I can't see
why nmake can't do it for me eg icc mytime0.cpp usetime.cpp

HI,

Just got to the stage of separating project files, and am trying to get
nmake to compile them, I have three files , Using VA CPP OS/2 V 3

Time0.h (Basic set up classes and methods)
Time0.cpp (contains the methods themselves)
useTime.cpp (This is the 'main' bit.....)

Below is my make file and yes I do use the -f option, it seems to
compile ok, no
error messages but no exe file at the end any ideas?

 # make file for useTime0.cpp:

mytime0.exe: mytime0.obj usetime0.obj

ilink usetime0 mytime0 #main link bit.

mytime0.obj: mytime0.cpp mytime0.h
        icc -c mytime0.cpp

usetime0.obj: usetime0.cpp mytime0.h
        icc -c usetime0.cpp

Please post and email

The -c should be there, means that the files specified should only be
compiled, not linked. That's how you want it for generating the obj
files in a makefile. Your problem is that you have a blank line
between the exe target and the ilink command. Remove it, and you
should be fine.

Like this:

# make file for useTime0.cpp:

mytime0.exe: mytime0.obj usetime0.obj
	ilink usetime0 mytime0 #main link bit.

mytime0.obj: mytime0.cpp mytime0.h
	icc -c mytime0.cpp

usetime0.obj: usetime0.cpp mytime0.h
	icc -c usetime0.cpp

Take Care!

It is also a very good way to make prototypes, GUI-frontends to command files
and even some quite elaborate applications.

One thing which has surprised me, is how fast Object REXX is at some quite
complex tasks.
If you makeheavy use of REXX for non-trivial tasks, it is a major improvement
over classic REXX. The expanded utility library allows you to use OS/2
semaphores to synchronize tasks, and the object model in OREXX is good for
multitasking. You can always trade memory for speed by loading things into the
REXX macro space, but in any case the classes built into OREXX seem to be
quite
efficient. It is not quite bug-free, but it is flexible, easy to use, and
faster
than Java.

Even a casual programmer should learn Java, though. It is a better
object-oriented language than c++ (which I never liked much, being used to
Smalltalk), continuously developed and with a free development kit from IBM.
If
you can handle the enormous download, you can even get the entire Visual Age
Java preview free. It will let you compile to native code, which speeds things
up a bit.

Why? Borland never did a good job supporting OS/2. They had many
serious bugs in their compilers, and only fixed them by coming out with
another version - which had a completely different set of bugs.

A typical point - back in 1992 or so, a Borland rep posted in the OS/2
Development forum on CompuServe. He asked why people weren't using
Borland/C++ for OS/2. He was told by several people that:

1. It has bugs - but as developers we understand how complex the
compiler is, and expect bugs.

2. Borland should just admit there are bugs, instead of covering them
up. To not do so diminishes Borland's credibility.

3. Borland should provide fixes for the bugs in a timely manner -
instead of waiting a year to come out with another version.

I gave up on Borland several years ago.

VisualAge/C++ is a much better product.

I would not use TIFF, as it is rather less efficient than newer formats.

I would recommend PNG, which is made to replace and improve upon the GIF
format.

The PNG specification is available at w3.org, and you should be able to find a
pointer to free source code. Lossy compression tends to ruin the readability
of
text, so I think this is your best bet. The compression algorithm is in the
public domain (unlike LZW, which is patented). To try out the format, you may
download a copy of PMview (from one of the usual places), butI do not think it
implements all the options in PNG. For your purpose, I think it is possible to
write a version optimized for the combination of text and grayscale images.

2 or 3 lines of message and 70-odd of crap. Why do you feel the need to post
this? We are not interested in all this shite. Go away.

Yes Jerry,

I know, for programming purposes VisualAge/C++ is the better produkt.
Mainliy i am interested in the Turbo Debugger, which is a verry common
debugging interface to me.

Well, I'm still using BCOS2 and IMHO it is not as bad as many people
say,
but the Debugger is *REALLY* the worst part of it. I strongly discourage
you
from using it because in most cases it will simply freeze your system.
Especially
when attempting to debug multithreaded PM apps.

1. Try running with 256 colors. I've seen problems when running a lot
of colors.

2. Install fixpak 1 from
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/visualagecpp/fixes/...

3. Check into the VACPP newsgroups on news.software.ibm.com.

Subj: VisAge 3 C++ lost use of Editor in Project Menu from Debugger. Help!

From: Chris Hodgkins <chris@slave.demon.co.uk>

On a Warp 4 box with fix pack 11 applied and Visual Age C++ 3 with Fix
pack 8 I've lost the use of the Editor from the Project menu in the
Debugger.
I get access violations when I select this from the menu or double left
click on white space to launch the editor to the specific code that I'm
debugging at that time.
FWIW The Context help Cntrl-H from the Debugger has stopped working as
well. It moans about not finding the ndx files in the dpath or bookshelf
paths. However the paths are correct on config.sys, and the Editor finds
theme when I use context help from there.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there an easy fix or should I Zap VisAge
3 and re-install?

cheers

            TESTING TECHNOLOGY VS. TESTERS' REQUIREMENTS

Technology for testing and automated solutions have grown remarkably
in the past decade. But the question is still before us -- do we have the
support from technology that we need? Has technology solved the right
problems? Is the technology accessible enough to today's tester? What are
the pitfalls of using such technology? This year, we will be looking at
the experiences with various aspects of testing technology some
successful, and some not.

We look forward to having you share your experiences and learn from
others. I look forward to seeing you there.
