Subj: Mag Optical for storage

From: sachmo@horn.net

I'd like to have some opinions on MagOptical for storage/retrieval -
the good, the bad and the ugly.

My track record over the years has been extremely marginal to the
point that it's almost better not to make a backup for then I'm not
relying on a retrieval system that invariably breaks down and data is
lost.

The data represents months of work and is sensitive in nature. It is
also voluminous so I'd prefer not to have to take it to hard copy. On
that option parts would have to be re-keyed on an on-going basis
resulting in downtime.

Lauds, moans, gripes, suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks

Only brain dead OS's require a primary to boot from. With a boot manager
installed, other systems can be booted from alternate partitions, which
means a selection of coexisting bootable partitions on a single system.
Put doze on C:. Put OS/2 on a logical HPFS and doze won't bother it
unless you use its belligerent FDISK to corrupt your partition table(s).

Subj: New, larger drive: Netscape can't see available disk space

From: domi@kenavo.NOSPAM.fi (Dominique Pivard)

I replaced the 2nd drive of my desktop (1 GB) with a new, larger one
(4 GB). Whenever I'm downloading a file with Netscape, I get a warning
that "filename will be larger than the amount of available disk space.
Do you wish to continue?". There's more than 2 GB of free space on the
drive in question, and the files I want to download are much smaller
than that. I'm able to bypass the warning, so the problem is not that
serious. However, I would like to know if I can get rid of it.

This is with Warp 3, FP42, Netscape 2.02 and 4.61 (same behaviour) and
the drives are SCSI (no IDE devices).

Thanks, Dominique

I wonder if you have opened up a partition of larger than 2047K in a FAT

Subj: PM freeze problem after installing Linux

From: rzimmerm@almaak.usc.edu (Roger Zimmermann)

Hi everyone,

I have a strange problem and I am getting really desperate to find a
solution.

The situation is as follows:
Last Friday I tried to install Linux RedHat 6.0 on a partition of my
Dell Dimension XPS R450 system with a 12 GB drive.
I already have Win98 and OS/2 Warp 4, FP11, on it (via Boot Manager).
Before the Linux installation, OS/2 was working very stable for weeks.

 Primary Partition: Boot Manager (7MB)
 Primary Partition: C: Win98 (2GB)
 Extended Partition: D: OS/2 boot (HPFS, 2GB)
 Extended Partition: E: OS/2 data (HPFS, 2GB)
Extended Partition: G: Fat32, 2GB (drive is G: because of PARTFILT remapping)
Extended Partition: F: OS/2 scratch (HPFS, 4GB), to be used for Linux

The Linux installation went OK on the F: partition as far as I could tell.
I added Linux to the Boot Manager and was able to boot into all three OSes.

Since then I have this very strange problem with OS/2. I can boot into OS/2,
work for about 2-3 minutes, and then PM applications such as Netscape
Communicator, Acrobat Reader, etc. freeze. OS/2 windowed command prompts
continue to work but nothing PM related. Shutdown also does not work
anymore after some applications freeze.
The Linux partition used to be HPFS but I had only data on that
partition, no programs and there are no references in config.sys to F:

I have since removed Linux and restored my previous configuration (with
F: being HPFS). I have also removed the Linux entry from the Boot Manager.
I have switched OS/2 to VGA mode (I have a Matrox G200, driver v2.23) and I
have also tried an STB card. I have restored a backup of my OS/2 system
disk (D:) from two weeks ago. I have also tried to clean up my OS2.INI and
OS2SYS.INI files.

The result remains the same: PM applications freeze after about 2-3 minutes.
As far as I can tell, I am back to were I started with my configuration,
but the problem remains. Also, the problem seems to be strangely time (and
not individual application) related. There are no error messages.
I don't think it is a hardware problem since Win98 still works fine and
OS/2 also works with non-PM applications.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I really hope I don't need to start from scratch (because it seems that
even restoring system backups do not help).

Regards,
Roger

I have the Fujitsu 640 internal scsi connected to an Adaptec 2910 card
and am quite happy with the setup.

While it is true MO operations are not as fast as HD ops there is a
trade off: to get the reliability you trade speed. Not that ~3-4 MB/s
is too slow. My understanding of MO is this: Before data is written
the laser has to momentarily heat the recording substrate to allow
encoding. The cooled encoded substrate is then impervious to
dust/dirt/ humidty, and all but very strong Magnetic Fields. This is
how the reliability is obtained. Optics[laser] is not used to read
data, only to allow data encoding which is still a magnetic operation.

Fujitsu Europe's site has a good explanation of MO technology, better
than the US site. Plus they give better details on the new 1.3Gb MO
drive, imagine 1.3 GB on a suface the same size or smaller than a 3.5
floppy. You can kick these things across the floor and they still
work[try that with a ZIP disk], I have a 2 year old boy who has yet to
render a disk unreadable and he has tried his best!

The 2k sector is a non-issue. You do not need the N512DASD filter
unless you want to use HPFS, I use the Fujitsu drivers and they work
fine. If you do your file maintanence with the WPS then the long names
are stored in the EA's. I have >7Gb of data on MO and do not worry
about not using HPFS on the disks.

By the way the latest drivers and formatting tools are on the various
Fujitsu sites, again Europe seems better than the US, but I can send
them to you if you ever need them and can't find them.

As to cleaning, I haven't yet and have no troubles though with
everything a little maintainence is best.

Tim

Thanks for the reply.

I found a/the solution? If I set the dvd-cdrom as a master ( secondary
controller ) the system hangs, setting the dvd as a slave everything
works fine. I wonder if this is a bug in the ibm1s506 driver.

I have the just opposite situation with my old ide cdrom, it refuses
to operate unless it is set as a master on the secondary ide

BTW it is a creative labs 4X made by NEC.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!

I have Boot Manager on the machine in question. Warp does indeed boot from
a logical volume in the extended partition. Win98 did indeed corrupt the
entire extended partition with one of its "automatic" routines. I couldn't
"see" anything but Boot Manager and the C primary partition with Win98.

Very inetersting...I also have a similar slow boot where the Syquest syjet
drive
light stays lite (Yellow) being read by the system for who knows what, it does
not matter which Syjet disk I have in the drive. It seems to take forever to
let
the drive go. I have checked config, nothning strange there, but it persists,
even though I have changed my whole system, MB, Drive, CD rom, Memory, CPU,
everything, go figure. I hope someone else out there knows the fix.
Thanks out there ahead of time.

Are you sure you got that right??? It is known that a SLAVE, without a
MASTER, will sometimes work with older OS/2 IDE drivers, and with
windows systems, but it will NOT work (it should NEVER work, under any
circumstances) with the later OS/2 IDE driver.

The basic rule (for each controller), is that if a controller has a
single device attached, it MUST be a MASTER. If there is a second
device attached, it MUST be a SLAVE. If your device won't work, as a
single device on the interface, as a MASTER, then it is breaking the
rules, especially, if it does work as a SLAVE, without a MASTER.

Hope this helps...

Subj: HPFS386 big problem

From: "Rade Popovic" <rascho@nospam.iname.com>

Hi

This has happen to me twice (with HPFS386 installed). First time.
System is working normally and suddenly it starts freezing (hard reset
needed). After chkdsk /f complete wipeout directory is reported as
FOUND. So I copy it back to wipeout. System boots normally but I can't
copy or delete or move anything. Soon some message about file system
error starts poping out. So I run chkdsk again and a lot of files
finish in found directory. Also Partition Magic 4 from Win is reporting
some error with this partition. Interesting thing, i could copy files
with FM/2 or from command line just not from WPS. Reinstalation.
Second time (a few hours ago). System is working normally, and then I
try to delete one directory and boom "system is stoped" message pops
out. Hard reset. Chkdsk /f "found" some files (which are from directory
which I tried to delete). After reboot same file system error starts
poping out, so I have shut down right away. Then I have replaced
HPFS386 with HPFS and partition is usable again. After playing with
chkdsk I have removed all errors, and even PM4 isn't reporting any
errors.
I am running Warp3 with FP42. Has anybody seen this kind of behaviour
or can anybody explain to me what was happening? Why does HPFS386 after
some time destroys my partition?

Subj: SB 16 as tertiary IDE controller

From: Mark Klebanoff <maxikins@os2bbs.com>

I have an old non-PnP SB16. It had a built-in IDE controller to
control a CD rom. The controller is jumper controllable to IRQ
10,11,12 or 15, and to 4 different port addresses.

My current system has a WD 6.4 GB drive on the primary IDE channel,
and a CD-ROM as the secondary master and a Seagate TR-4 tape drive as
the secondary slave. I'd prefer not to hang anything on the same
channel as the Hard drive, so I'm looking for a tertiary IDE
controller to hang a ZIP 100 drive.

I enabled the tertiary port on the SB16, and set it to IRQ 11 (which I
think is free). Neither IBM1s506 nor DANIS506 drivers will recognize
the port, but I can force it by adding /U:2 /p:1e8 /IRQ:11.
IBMATAPI.FLT then recognizes the ZIP drive, but if I try to access it
the computer freezes solid. Is the card itself compatible with a ZIP
drive? I tried to hang the CD rom on the SB card and the ZIP on the
secondary on-board controller, but that doesn't work either (the BIOS
won't recognize the tape drive and the computer hangs).

BTW, the ZIP drive works perfectly when I jumper it as a slave and
hang it on the same channel as the Hard disk

If this ain't gonna work, are there addon cards that will give me
another IDE port and that work with OS/2?

I tried that. The BIOS wouldn't recognize the tape and the system
wouldn't boot. I may try making the ZIP the slave and the Tape the
Master in the secondary while putting the CD on the tertiary- I didn't
try that. It'll have to wait to the weekend, because I don't have

From: Johannes Wilhelm <x15@aixterm8.urz.uni-heidelberg.de>

I have a Fujitzu magnetooptical SCSI disk M2513A with the Adaptec AIC78U2
SCSI adapter. To run it with disks of 640MB and 2048 bytes/sector I
installed the N512DASD.FLT filter with following config.sys settings:

             .
             .
   BASEDEV=XDFLOPPY.FLT

   BASEDEV= OS2DASD.DMD /of /rf
             .
             .
             .

Sytem is OS/2 Warp4 with FP 9 german. The 512 bytes/sector disks are
running fine, but the 2048 bytes/sector disks are stopping the system
with following trap:

Netscape uses a signed integer to store the amount of free space on the
drive in order to compare it to the file size. The largest value a
signed integer can hold is ~=2GB. Thus if you have >2GB free space, it
overflows the variable, returning a negative value. We should be glad
that: 1. You can save it anyway. 2. It doesn't crash! :)

I did that just a few moments ago (been distracted by other issues for a

One thing of note is that I couldn't tell from what I did whether there was

anything started. Anyway,
at this point everything is off.

I'll post later with results.

That clears the drive boot mbr . Linux's lilo does the same and has to

Yes Im sure. I have two Matrox drives ( a master 13.6G 7200RPM and a
slave 13.6G 5400RPM ) hooked to the primary controller. The DVD-CDROM is
connected to the secondary controller acting as a slave.

Sorry but the rules don't apply here. ASUS P2B 128Mb, TNT2-Ultra, WARP

Subj: Hard drive wont play games. Help.

From: "Mark" <mark@premark.freeserve.co.uk>

Hi
I have 3 hard drives I am using on a computer with
Windows 95. But this computer does not have a
CD Rom drive and I would like to reconfigure one of
the drives to make the computer think that the drive
is a CD Rom drive so that I can play the games I have
installed on it.

The problem is I have copied games to my Windows 95
pc from the CD Rom drive on my Windows 98 pc. The
games are copied to the hard drive (all of the files on the
cd are copied) and are successfully installed, but when
I initialize the game and press 'play' I get an error message
telling me that the CD cant be found, even though all of the
necessary files are there on the hard drive.

Maybe Im doing it all wrong. Can a hard drive be used in
place of a CD Rom drive in this way? I would appreciate
any advise. Thank you.

Yea you can sometimes use subst to make the dir act like a new drive.
Or find a tiny program called fakecd.exe thats how we use to do it back in
the old days.

Thanks.

Slow doesn't bother me. I have sleep period - computer doesn't need
one. :-)

Is N512DASD from Fujitsu or an IBM driver? Other? Need it for I'm on
Warp 4.

For reliability I don't care if it's as fast as a lame mule. :-)

Zip? Not even in my thought pattern.

If a 2-year-old can't destroy it - it's permanent. I know about

Thoughts run something like this: dedicated HD to maintain a running
(cumulative) daily backup. Have had good luck with this using XCopy.
Not the best granted but better than nothing if the HD doesn't bite
it. Move important data/master progs/apps from the HD to MO then on a
regular schedule for long term storage.

Any particular reason not to run HPFS? Except for the stray Extended
Partition holding WordPerfect, the sys is HPFS across the board. Just
asking.

Now this is strange. This says you have a hard drive on the second
controller, which is a master, and the DVD drive is a slave on the
same interface. You did say that you have two hard drives on the first
controller, and ONLY the DVD drive on the second, did you not?

Does this device have a jumper to indicate whether it has a slave,
while it is a master??? If you have only the DVD drive on that
interface, it should work as a MASTER, without a SLAVE.

If that doesn't apply, I have no idea what is happening.

Well, the FIRST thing you did wrong, was ask this in a couple of OS/2
news groups. Here, we suggest that you FORMAT any drive that contains
Win95, and/or Win98 <g>.

You might get some better answers if you ask in a Windows newsgroup...

I've been using MO for several years - since before the days of Zip,
Jaz, PD and CDRW. For me it has always been an excellent long-term
storage medium and since the advent of NewDASD (folded into FP6 on
OS/2 4.0) it has been superb. I have a Maxoptix T5-2600 at work and
an HP SureStore at home and they both handle my 2.6Gb 5.25"
cartridges. Not as sexy as the neat little disks you can get nowadays
but I have a lifetime supply of cartridges (30) so I am not in any
hurry to change. The technology is proven and robust.

You really DO want to run HPFS on a magneto-optical cartridge. The
disks are slow enough and a FAT filesystem exacerbates the problem by
the way the directory structures are laid out. HPFS is better on two
counts. Firstly, it is a much more efficient layout so there is less
head movement. Secondly you don't have to rely on the glacially slow
WPS to store long names and you can use simple, fast tools such as
xcopy.

My biggest (and only) complaint is nothing to do with MO but with IBM
which dropped support for partitioned optical disks in Aurora. If I
want to run OS/2 on my dual pentium box I have to stick with 4.0 and
"waste" a CPU because while Aurora will let me use HPFS and even JFS
on "toy" media like Zip it forces me to use FAT on my
industrial-strength magneto-optical disks.

A tip about backups in general. The stuff you really want to back up
is your own work - your program code, data, pictures, letters, faxes,
email and so on, Everything else you can, at a pinch, reload or
reinstall from original disks or download from some FTP site. Your
own work is irreplaceable.

I know a commercial artist whose wife is an author of children's
stories. He religiously backed up all his installed software then
when his hard disk failed he was able to restore everything EXCEPT his
drawings, his portfolio, his tax records, his contact list, his quotes
and his wife's stories. (There was a happy ending to this story - I
was able to supply power to this drive from an external source just
long enough to retrieve almost everything - but a valuable lesson was
learned.)

The only advice you will get here is to reformat the entire drive and
install OS/2.

Robert,
you're right. It's a known problem - to me, at least - that some
CD-drives, even normal bread and butter 24x-drives, are not recognized
when they are connected to the second IDE channel as master and there is
no slave. It seems to be motherboard/controller-dependend. So either
switch one of your HD's to be master on the second channel and make the
CDROM to be slave or try to attach a third HD as slave behind the CDROM
as master (the latter sometimes works sometimes does not).

Yes, I've had that behaviour and seen it on several different machines. In
each case, it appeared to be related to faulty HD hardware or cabling. (IDE
in all instances, by the way, not SCSI.)

HPFS386 seems to be sensitive to hardware problems, and after I finished
cursing it I realized it had given me time to save off any critical data
before losing access to the drive completely.

I'd say, anytime you get extensive \FOUNDx entries on your system files,
start looking at the hardware, cabling, IDE controller, IRQ conflicts, that
kind of thing. But usually the HD itself.

But also be very careful using Partition Magic v.4 with *any* OS/2 system.
I think it makes partition table entries that are not fully compatible with
OS/2's file systems, somehow, and since reverting to PQM v.3.05 I have had
no other fishy problems of that kind. I have heard that if you bought v.4,
and have problems with OS/2, you can contact PowerQuest and ask for a copy
of v.3 and they'll send it to you, so I guess there's something to it.

Good luck,

Buddy

I took the plunge and go the MCD3130SS 1.3 Gb internal SCSI MO drive.

Using the drivers below, the 1.3 Gb drive is not recognized. Using
the Fujitsu driver modisk.sys (while reming out n512dasd.flt and
dropping the parameters on os2dasd), the 1.3 Gb is recognized but my
640 is not and only FAT is supported. All my MOs are HPFS and I
would prefer to continue that way.

PQM V4 is convinced that any extended partitions it creates must be type
0x0f (a MS specific partition type) instead of the standard 0x05 which
everyone can use. It's defined your drives inside an extended partition
that OS/2 doesn't recognise as extended. Do the partitioning from OS/2's

Win98 MUST be installed into a primary partition on the *first* physical

Subj: Re: Partitions not seen by OS/2 on new Atlas IV

From: rlhofer@engineering.uiowa.edu (Rob Hofer)

Thanks for the help. Ironically, I came home this afternoon and found both
problems and fixed them within 30 minutes, and you are right on on both.

Windows98 can boot and run off the second physical drive, but it can't install
to it. So I swapped SCSI IDs by marking the 2nd drive as the Boot ID, and
win98
installs fine, then i revert back to the Boot Manager drive as the boot ID,
and windows98 then runs just peachy. Oddly, DOS can install directly onto
the 2nd disk with an A:\SYS C: command. Win98 can't.

And yes, I am not very happy with PM 4.0. First, it always wants to use FAT32
partitions, and I have to keep jumping up the cluster size to force it to
FAT16,
and while i was in PM 3.0 in OS/2, i got the info on the extended on my new
drive and my old drive, and yup, the new one is type 0x0F and the old one
was type 0x05. For a program that was basically BORN on OS/2, PowerQuest
has really alienated OS/2 users by this, and the fact that version 4.0 does
not
have a native OS/2 or linux binary.

Again, thanks for the help, even though I figured it out probably as you wrote
it. =)

Subj: Partitions not seen by OS/2 on new Atlas IV

From: Robert Leon Hofer <rlhofer@engineering.uiowa.edu>

I just added an Atlas IV 9.1GB U2W SCSI hard drive to my system last
night.
I now have two hard disks, the former being a Viking II 4.5GB. I have
them setup in the following:

ID10(viking): Boot Manager - and then four logical FAT16 partitions
ID11(atlas): DOS6 PRI / WIN98 PRI / OS/2 PRI / then logicals, some FAT
some HPFS.

i did the partitioning in Partition Magic 4.0 (dos text mode version)
and OS/2
fails to see any partitions in the extended on ID11. what really bugs
me,
is that when i run Partition Magic 3.0 inside OS/2, those 2 FAT and 2
HPFS
partitions inside the xtended DO have drive letters. But from the
command
prompt and desktop, those drive letters do not exist. I am not sure what
is
up. My SCSI controller is an Adaptec 2940UW PCI.

This may also be related to the fact that I cannot get Win98 installed
onto
it's primary partition either. Even if I mark it as the active
partition,
the Win98 setup program gives me an error SU 0013 and refuses to install
(DOS 6.22 can read/write the win98 install partition just fine).

Any insight what's going on here? Is this an OS problem, a partitioning
problem, or should I just low level format the new Atlas with the
Adaptec BIOS utility and start fresh creating the partitions?

Any advice appreciated...

I am told that you need to make sure and always boot with a disk in the

From: engs0011@sable.ox.ac.uk (Ian Johnston)

I have an Adaptec SCSI card in my macine. This has three SCSI connections,
or which I am allowed to use, and am using, two (one for the main HD, one
for the CD-R). I may need to add an external SCSI Zip drive and scanner
to the system, which will mean an extra SCSI card. I have a spare Adaptec
card, identical to the one in it.

Do I need to do more than open the machine, add the card - suitably jumpered -
and reboot. Will Warp 4 recognize that there are now two SCSI chains? Do I
need to install the driver twice?

I've been using an IDE Orb with no problems. Are the Orb and the CDROM on
the same controller? If so, is the ORB configured as master with the CDROM
as slave?

Ahhhh..... but does PM3.05 handle HDD's >8Gb and/or FAT32X?
Somewhat only tenuously related but I have a machine with W98 OEM
installed using FAT32X (0c'X') that's totally occupying the 10.8Gb IDE
drive and PM3.05 refuses to offer a partition re-size option.
Testing this on a 6.4Gb IDE/4.3Gb SCSI HDD combo with W98 retail? using
FAT32(0b'X') and PM3.05 worked(allthough IBM's BM had to be replaced
with PQ's version).

So is it possible in this scenario that one may have to use both PM4.0
and 3.05? (an interesting little licensing "gotcha" if that is indeed
the case<vbg>).

Apologies if this is totally irrelevant in the context being
discussed.... depending on what "other" OS is installed(if any) and/or
HDD size perhaps?<g>

It handles the normal, ordinary, widely-supported stuff I try to limit my
use to.

I retired using FAT32 because even the Win98 boot disk couldn't recognize
it when I had to do a reinstall. That seemed too stupid for words.

I still strongly recommend System Commander Deluxe for boot management. It
*also* offers some ability to resize partitions, though I haven't tested it
on such HD sizes.

I've run both, and interestingly another level of complexity comes in with
WSeB's LVM partitioning. You cannot make *any* changes to a partition
without LVM complaining that it has lost sight of it. So far, simply doing
a delete/reinstall for that partition solves it.

Anyone who wants to run multiple OSs has to work out the inconsistencies
that now exist. Staying in one OS makes it a lot simpler.

Another way is to dedicate one computer for each OS ;-). I just did
that, buying 3 second-hand ThinkPad 560's on Ebay. Now I can have one
for Linux, one for Windoze 95, and one for NT (and of course the one I
already owned for Warp 3) and I don't have to play with fire and
witness Mickey$oft messing around with my partitions.

What backup software supports these devices, if any?

Orb is master on secondary controller. I thought it may have something
to do with the location of ideadapi.flt in config sys. Where is yours

Agreed as my rather limited experiences to date seems to confirm some
strange anomalies with W98/FAT32 and using IBM's BM. W98 was even
apparently taking a hidden C: (DOS FAT16) partition and appending"(?!?)
it to it's drive list(My Computer)?
Notwithstanding the well known "gotcha" of having to ensure there was at
least one non FAT32 primary otherwise FDISK/OS2 didn't recognise a valid
FS type C: primary and shuffled drive letters!<g>.
PM3.x did however successfully restore FAT32 to FAT16........

Thanks for that tip - I assume this is commercial/registerable
shareware?
Any chance of a pointer where I may obtain a demo to confirm it will
work in my scenario?
(sorry I'm lazy as I assume BMT or IB will probably source it?).

I'm only fiddling with W98/FAT32 on someone elses behalf (I will keep it
to FAT16 when it goes on my m/c at a later date<g>), so I'd rather not
upgrade PM to v4 just for this one-off although I beginning to suspect
this is the only alternative with his current FS/DASD size?

Your other points regarding LVM/JFS etc noted (with thanks) for future
reference.

My device=ibmadapi.flt is located after all the cdrom stuff. Also, because I
have a VIA chipset, I have been using the danis506.add driver. However, my
orb also works with the ibm1s506.add.

Any TR-4 (4/8 Gig) IDE ought to work, provided the software supports
it. BackAgain/2 supports those drives. Don't know if it's yet been
updated to support bigger drives, but it's worth looking into, since

From: "Ivan Adzhubei" <ivan@protein.bio.msu.su>

Anyone else noticed this? After applying FP12 to my Warp 4 machine I am
getting very strange sounds from my HDD. At the very end of boot
sequence, just after the screen is cleared from drivers' boot messages
and before the blue PM color appears - my hard disk now makes a long
harsh ar-r-r-r sound like its heads are trying to go past the disk
surface :-). The sound lasts for 5-6 sec, boot then proceeds normally
and everything works fine, but I'm really scared to reboot my machine
now, I am not sure how long my HDD will survive this kind of "surface
testing". Needless to say, I've run checkdisk and GTU disk checker
several times with no errors of any kind reported.

The system is AMD K6-266, ASUS P55T2P4 mobo with 128M RAM, Tekram
DC-390F UW SCSI adapter and WD 3.4G UW SCSI attached (it also has second
EIDE WD 3.6G disk, used for storage only). Device drivers are left at
FP10 level, e.g. I did not apply DD Fixpack. Other hardware includes
ESS1868 sound card, two NICs (Realtek 8029 and DEC 41021 chipsets) and
Matrox Millenium I PCI video. The only device driver that was upgraded
simultaneously with applying FP12 is Matrox one, now at v.2.31.100.

Cheers,
Ivan

This is interesting information. I
use PM4 extensivly so every partition
on my HD is modified by it at least
once. I did not have any data loss or
any other problems with my HD (except
this) so how can I tell if my HD is
OK? Anyway, I will keep this
information in mind.

Subj: Trying to install OS/2 Warp 4 with updated IDE drivers !!!

From: "Gregory L. Marx" <skidmarx@att.net>

Help !!!

I've done this and I STILL can't get Warp to see the NEW 13gig drive.

It's weird:

~ Boot with the install disk ...
~ Replace with Disk One when prompted ...
~ After a few seconds the floppy drive flips out making a strange
noise. Like it's constantly being hit with a data access request. But
it still prompts for the second disk ...
~ As soon as I press enter on the second disk a constant stream of text
paints up the screen until it finally stops with a error message of
"OS/2 is unable to operate your hard disk or your floppy disk ..."

The really strange thing is I can boot with the ORIGINAL floppy disks
and it follows thru as expected. Of course, the drive parameters are all
wrong when I manually run FDISK so I can't add a bootmanager partition.
It's a 13gig Maxtor drive. But because it does boot up and ask for the
cdrom I figure it must be the ide driver that is causing the problem.

I've tried the /w switch to no affect ...
I'm at a loss on what to do next :=(

Config as follows:

FIC VA-503+ motherboard w/AMD K62-400 cpu and 64 megs SIMM memory.
Drive setup:
Master 1 ~ 13gig Maxtor set with 4gig NT boot NTFS primary partition.
8gig NTFS extended partition. 10meg free for OS/2 BM.
Second 1 ~ 2gig unpartitioned Seagate I want to install Warp onto.
Master 2 ~ Memorex CD-RW IDE drive
Second 2 ~ 2.5gig HPFS Fujitsu drive - single partition.

Any ideas, please email ...

Yep! I notice that too, but I don't know if its because the
new matrox drivers or the fixpak, because I applied them
both at the same time.
