All that seems to be hard coded in VIEW.EXE and the help file in question.

Thus another urge to write a replacement! :-)

Anyone know of a simple commandline utility to post a news message to a news

All I want is the ability to type something like this at a prompt:

[C:\]postnews -server news.yesic.com -group comp.os.os2.mail-news -subject

Anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks,

How can I do that and preserve the long filenames?

Is it possible, for instance, to use zip, and unpack the zip-file

Thanks for all help,

I've sent email to Psoft, but thought some help may be found here as well.

I have installed the recent version (4-29-99) of version 1.20, but now I
can't get help. It states it is unavailable, help creation error. This
is in e.exe (I copied ee to it to replace the system editor), or ee, or
even eee.

The path is f:\e, and it is in path, dpath, libpath, help, and bookshelf.

Any ideas?

TIA.

I guess you are syaing you renamed ee.exe to e.exe. At least part of the
lower
versions use the EEE.HLP file.

Do helps derived from HLP files for other programs work? I'd wonder if the
viewhelp.exe is functional. Some times it has quit working for me, but I've
never known what made it start working again.

Aside from that I have no clue. Mine works fine right now on ee.exe.

Thanks for the idea. All other hlp files work, only eee.hlp does not
work. Further, eee.hlp from version 1.10 works through viewhelp.exe.

I've let the pillarsoft person know about this. I'll add that he's been

If you haven't alreqdy, try unzipping a new copy of eee.hlp. It could be

But you better use InfoZip on the Windows side. WinZip's zip files
seems to lost their cases in the filenames when unzipped with InfoZip.

One thing which has surprised me, is how fast Object REXX is at some quite
complex tasks.
If you makeheavy use of REXX for non-trivial tasks, it is a major improvement
over classic REXX. The expanded utility library allows you to use OS/2
semaphores to synchronize tasks, and the object model in OREXX is good for
multitasking. You can always trade memory for speed by loading things into the
REXX macro space, but in any case the classes built into OREXX seem to be
quite
efficient. It is not quite bug-free, but it is flexible, easy to use, and
faster
than Java.

Even a casual programmer should learn Java, though. It is a better
object-oriented language than c++ (which I never liked much, being used to
Smalltalk), continuously developed and with a free development kit from IBM.
If
you can handle the enormous download, you can even get the entire Visual Age
Java preview free. It will let you compile to native code, which speeds things
up a bit.

Yes, it is corrupt. The program works fine using the old 1.10 help file.

I got the zip file from the pillarsoft site, and it tests OK, so I think
the file itself is corrupt. I've asked for a new version of EEE.HLP, but
have note received it yet.

Hobbes only has version 1.10 on its site.

Subj: GIMP, XFree86, GhostScript HELP PLEASE.

From: rappleby@cadvision.com (Ray Appleby)

I am trying to open a .EPS file in GIMP. After getting
XFree86/XWindows/GIMP setup, the first try said that it couldn't find
gs.exe (ghostscript) so I installed ghostscript for X11 from Hobbes.
Didn't work. I have been advised that ghostscript 5.5 for OS/2 will
work under XWindows but I'm not convinced of that since the
executables have different names (I need it to work in conjuction
(seamlessly) with GIMP which wants to call gs.exe to interpret the
encapsulated postscript file.)

I can't find any info on how to properly set up ghostscript under
XFree86/XWindows.

If anyone has done this could you please post the procedure or
location and name of a readme file which contains detailed info about
this specific procedure.

I don't just want to run ghostscript, I want it to work in conjuction
with GIMP under XWindows.

Thanks.

I WANT them as they inform
me about what's new. We
should be encouraging as
much development for OS/2
as possible, not slamming it.
Otherwise how are we going
to beat the "Nothing is developed
for OS/2" crowd without proof
of developments.

The moden internet is commercial
mate.

Cheers,

tom

Ghostscript isn't a GUI program, and as such will "work under X
windows"!

GhostView is a GUI front-end to gs.exe and an OS/2 Presentation
Manager version is available - this won't work under X.

I imagine (but don't know) that the OS/2 X version is also a
front end for gs.exe.

Whoa! Try a little less coffee, before you post. :-)

IMHO, C.J.'s posting was 100% appropriate
for posting to the comp.os.os2.utilities newsgroup.

Having *MORE* sources of software for OS/2 is better than the
alternative.

Subj: Hardware Mgr Problem....

From: "Richard M. Dunham" <r.dunham@onsemi.com>

Recently, I installed NT4 and then OS2 with Boot Manager on my TP385XD.
My 385 has a 3.2GB HD w/96MB ram, FP11, DDPak 1, etc. Installation
proceeded normally and all appeared to be working correctly until I
looked at the folder for the HW Mgr. All icons appeared as large black
dots. If I open the folder in the icon view all black icons then turn
into large red icons with an "FS" in the center.

Next I checked the properties of an item in HD Mgr and then an error
message appears stating:

The system was unable to show settings for the object. The system may
be out of resources. OK CANCEL HELP

I've check the system out for IRQs, I/Os, etc using RMVIEW but I don't
see any problems with the setup. Have tried changing the PCI buss IRQ
but no difference was noted. Also REM'd out the USB drivers in the
CONFIG.SYS-no difference.

If you have any suggestions on this situation please let me know.

If there is something new the AUTHORS and NOT all
those "companies" where you can pay (without knowing
of the author will receive his money BTW unless the author
has an arrangement published on his/her own website) could
send out a note to comp.os.os2.announcements.

Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript page description
language used by
laser printers. GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript that
runs on Windows, OS/2 and X11. Info on how to obtain and configure
GSView and Ghostscript under OS/2 (and other platforms) is available at:

http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.html

All of the files and information that you need are available here but
you will have to download and read some READ.ME files to get some of the
info.

The comp.os.os2.announce newsgroup exists for this purpose, and it can
be read as easily as the other comp.os.os2.* newsgroups.

If the announce newsgroup didn't exist, I'd be pleased to see that type
of announcement in the other OS/2 newsgroups, but we voted for a group
specifically for what he wants to post. IMhO, vendors should use it.

Subj: Record CD track, then slow it down?

From: robert_meineke@hotmail.com

Is it possible to record a track off of a
CD, save it as .wav perhaps, and then listen
to it at 50% its original speed?

Are there any utilities available that can do
this - or any combination of utilities that can?
Multimedia is not my forte...I poked around
Hobbes and deja.com but am not able to sufficiently
answer my question with the info gleaned from
those sources.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Just grab any CD "ripper" (leech or whatever) and dump the track to a
.wav. Right click the file, select "Open As" -> "Audio Editor". Then,
"Edit" -> "Select All". Then "Edit" -> "Special Effects" -> "Half
Speed".

Have fun! (Isn't OS/2 great? Try *that* in Win95 w/o extra software!)

There used to be CuSeeMe for OS/2, but all development has been

Just found yesterday WarpCDCopy1b1.zip
at Hobbes. Lets you get tracks from a CD and
put it onto your hard drive. However, I have pro-
blems loading the resulting WAV into OS/2 Warp's
standard WAV-editor. Might be that the resulting 75
Mb file is to huge to be handled by that one? So for the
reduced speed playing I would not know an answer, yet.

OK, I will stick 2c's worth in here.

1) There is a brilliant little neglected package called Person to Person
on the original Warp disks. IT STILL WORKS! (between OS2 machines)

2) I am not sure but is CUSEEME completely gone?

I think so. There may be some copies still floating around, though. I
still have several versions on my disk, at least (but haven't used the
program for a long time). I seem to remember the program (all the
versions were betas) had an expiration date built-in. When someone
suggested ways to remove it, the author got really mad. He seemed keen
to ensure no one would ever do anything useful with CuSeeMe/2, which
is a pity. I don't know what he would have lost by passing on the
project with code to someone else.

Yes, he is an idiot and some people got really mad at him and wrote a
patch to remove the date limit on it, and published it. It is also
floating around

From: "Lionel C. Abrahams" <abrahams@sparc.isl.net>

After a rare OS/2 WARP 4 system crash, I have found that on my HPFS
drives, some of my files and directories date/time stamped got
updated to the date/time of the crash :-(

Using the detail view of the drives object, I see that the "last
write date" and "last write time" were the same as the "last access
date" and "last access time" (crash date/time), and naturally were
different from the "Creation date" and "Creation time"

How easy/hard/impossible would it be to write a REXX routine to
sequentially inspect every file on my HPFS drives, and reset a file
"last write date" and "last write time" to its file "Creation date"
and "Creation time", when/if it found the file "last write date" to
be the same as its "last access date"?

I am learning REXX, and this sounds like a neat utility, but I have
not the foggiest idea where those fields are maintained in a file,
and how to access/modify them :-(

TIA

I suspect FP11. Suggest you go to FP12. However, go to
http://www.os2ss.com/users/mckinnis for further discussion, a work
around, and a little Rexx routine that will put things back after you
get rid of the offending HPFS stuff.

Good lord! You must've decoded the rosetta stone in a former life. How
else could you have unearthed that secret of the ancients, Person to Person???

Seriously, I've always wanted to try it out, but never found anyone who used
it.

What cameras does it support? Anything modern (and cheap)?

Honestly I would be satisfied with the voice part only.... Making
longdistance calls, to local rate, like it's possible using NetMeeting,
without camera.

But maybe tomorrow, I will go for the video part too.... ;)

Yes well, I have been around OS2 for a while, It is just that P2P is a great
little product that got killed off for political reasons.

>Seriously, I've always wanted to try it out, but never found anyone who used
it.
>

Ok, I have used all the features except the camera stuff. The reason is that
one of my machines is PCI and the other is a 486. I am in the process of
getting
another PCI machine then I will investigate the cameras. Some points
1) I do know someone who is using P2P with cameras so I pretty sure they work.
2) P2P uses MPEG2 for compression so it is pretty good on disk space.
3) I understand that it can use software emulation to display an incoming
video so that if you only have a camera on one end you can still display an
image at the other.

>What cameras does it support? Anything modern (and cheap)?

I have an old BETACAM lying around(no further remarks about ancients please)
which Intend to try this out with.

Let me know if you have some success.

As suggested elsewhere, you might be seeing a bug, introduced in FP11.
Go to FP12, or back out to your previous FP.

I don't know if it will help, but check out the REXX Tips an tricks
(look for RXTT29.ZIP). There is a LOT of good stuff there.

Hope this helps...
