I am planning on installing a RWCD in the new year. Is there any
consensuse as to which is the best unit to install for OS2/W98 setup?

I don't think so. I like my Ricoh MP7040S since it's software
upgradeble to 7060S, i.e. from 4x writing to 6x writing. Probably hard
to find now though, since the 7060 has replaced the 7040.

It does have one problem, though. I couldn't read multi-session CDs in
the Ricoh in OS/2. That is, until I patched os2cdrom.dmd. For some
reason, that file contains a list of drive brands and if your drive
brand, isn't on the list, OS/2 only shows the first session on a
multi-session disc. I understand this 'problem' concerns Yamaha drives
as well.

Available CD writing software isn't much for OS/2. There's RSJ, which
is expensive and for SCSI drives there's a Unix port, cdrecord.

I read somewhere on comp.os.linux.* that the shipset in the so-called
"SoundBlaster 16" PCI card is not related at all to the original CL
SoundBlaster 16 chipset.

Does it use ESS chips? Can you see the card itself?

It's been a couple years but this sounds familiar from my basic 64.
Yes, 16
OS/2 driver worked. Makes sense you can't use the windows 3.1 drivers,
but
I'm really sure I got the downloaded Win/OS2 driver to work too.
Creative, if
they are still listed--or through the IBM file site? I remember this
clearly because
I got the beta 64 driver to work on OS/2 but _never_ on Win/OS2 (try
searching
through the os2ss.com site) and that screwed up my realaudio in
particular.

I may be wrong, but I believe you could also try installing the awe32
software
for OS/2.

But, yes, I am _much_ happier doing [that which must not be named],
purchased
from [those who cannot be mentioned].

Subj: A Sound Question

From: "bakern@ibm.net" <bakern@ibm.net>

I have two amplifiers connected to my PC. The output from the
first amp connects to the sound card input (from one room, along the
hall to another room). The sound card output is connected to another
amplifier that drives speakers mounted on the wall in the room
with my PC.

When I boot Windows 98, the OS directs the sound through the sound
card and I get sound in both rooms.

Under OS/2 this does not happen. To get the sound through the sound
card I have to use "Digital Audio". By loading a .WAV file and
setting the input to "line in" the sound will come through the system
as per Win98.

What I am looking for is a way to either permanently set up OS/2 so
the sound input goes through the sound card, or some automatic (and
easy) way to set this up as part of the boot sequence.

I came across a program WAVHDREC.ZIP that will open a channel and
record the sound to a .WAV file, so I know this is possible.

Any assistance is appreciated.

That depends on what sort of server the files are on and if the audio is
live or pre-recorded. If the files are on a regular web-server (http://
is in the .ram file) then just copy the URL into a browser or whatever
and save it to disk. If the .ram has anything else (pnm:// is one IIRC)
then you may as well forget about it. The RealServer setup is designed to
keep nosey people out, and protect copyrighted information. If the CLI
real audio player had the network code in it (which it doesn't), someone
could hack together a program to rip the files, but I don't think anybody
has done that as of yet.

Anyway, in addition to all this, if you bough the RealPlayer Plus, you
have a record button that will allow you to record live and pre-recorded
events to the local disk. Unless, that is, the material was encoded with
the "no record" option turned on, which will not allow RealPlayer to
record the stream.

But if you can get the stream written to disk, then RealPlayer should
have no problems playing it.

Dead dead dead. It was a port of an Amiga version, which is also dead.

Roland,

I've had my share of nits with Wseb. What I would suggest trying is copying
the scsi driver(s) from the 4.0 box to the Wseb box and reboot. Uhh... make
a backup first... :')

Over here, the Wseb supplied drivers for our bus mice and com.sys simply
refuse
to work. Also, we've noticed some really weird characters being displayed
where
time, date and other information should be displayed. It's such an annoyance,
I took the Wseb box offline and replaced it with old-but-true Lanserver 4.0.

Lanserver works... and works... and works...

In Wseb for instance, clicking open netscape on Wseb, going to page setup and
looking
at the margin settings... instead of seeing numbers, garbage is displayed and
once you open page setup, your netscape printing support is destroyed... It's
not a netscape specific problem as this "bug" is sprinkled all though Wseb.

Some days Wseb is perfect, some days all it wants to display is trash and it's
total hell.

I have one 4416S on my personal OS/2 machine client and one 4416S on a Wseb
server.

They both run flawlessly, burning both CDR and CDRW via CDRECORD. IMHO the
6416
just isn't worth the extra bucks. You be better off buying the 4416 and
spending the difference that a 6416 costs on extra media...

The driver I am using is the same as under Warp 4.0. I have tried previous
versions and all exhibit the same problem. This is the driver I'm using
currently (taken from a directory listing):

21-01-99 11:48a 138380 219 AIC78U2.ADD

This is version 3.02 of the driver as downloaded from the ASUS site, since it
is an Asus motherboard. It is the same as the driver that can be downloaded
from the Adaptec site too.

Not sure if I've tried the driver that comes with WSeB since I upgraded my
machine from Warp 4 to WSeB, rather than doing a fresh install. I'll check
this out...

Hi

I have a 6416s, and a Tekram DC390U2W. I haven't had the drive long
enough yet to test it thoroughly, I haven't tried at all to record
anything with either Linux or Solaris.

It comes with Adaptec recording software for Win32, which seems to work
OK. It also comes with jumpers and a single connection SCSI cable
(SCSI-2, 10Mbyte/sec).

On OS/2, the software choice seems to be either RSJ ($$$) or
cdrecord/mkisofs. The latter seems to work. However, to date I haven't
succeeded in creating a multisession disk that OS/2 can read other than
the 1st session. Perhaps this is a limitation of the decrepit cdfs.ifs.

I haven't yet tried the demo version of RSJ.

Regards
Paul

Jerry,

In another posting, Eric Olson suggested that I flash the firmware on my
CDRW. Once I finally found the update files on the Yamaha web site (I must be
going blind!), I downloaded the latest flash and then set about building a
DOS boot disk with SCSI support. This is turning out to be a painfull
experience (I haven't used DOS for a *long* time) as I don't have any FAT
partitions on my system, so I'm trying to build everything onto a diskette. I
hate DOS...

Hopefully the firmware update will fix the problem as it specifically
addresses problems with identifying the CDRW at boot time. I hope it is all
worth it....

I have already tried the driver from Warp 4.0 and it hasn't made any
difference.

As for other problems with WSeB, I've not had too many. Java isn't too good
in Netscape 4.61 and the SMP performance didn't make as much difference as
I'd hoped for in the upgrade from Warp 4.0 (1 x 400MHz PII) to WSeB (2 x
400MHz PII), but generally it is exceptionally stable and does everything I
want. There are problems but I'm getting around them, however painfull :-)

Thanks,

Does anyone Have any experience with the most recent high capacity IDE

I am inclined to buy the WD Caviar models, past experiences has been very

I have a WD 20 Gb sitting in a box right now - no luck getting it to
work under Warp 4 or WSeB. To be fair, however, haven't had much time
for it lately. I heard that either the danis506.add or the newest
(possibly not yet released) IBM1S506.add driver is required.

Got one of these SCSI drives running under WSeB on an Adaptec 1542 no

Another wander down memory lanes - I remember when 16 of us made use of
a machine with 100 MB total disk space and 2 MB RAM to develop and
compile half a dozen different interpreters and the equivalent compiler
versions (where applicable - there can't really be an APL compiler) -
1983 at Watcom (back then it was WatCom). I remember running PCs with
128 KB and floppies...

I recently worked with a large life insurance company that lives on its
database, and the data for the entire mainframe, plus application code,
and source for those applications, lived on 22 GB (but mainframes don't
need anywhere near as much code to implement GUIs). Not that I'd try to
run the same setup off a PC, mind you ;) - it probably couldn't handle
500 simultaneous active users.

It all goes back to the difference in uses - I make use of background
wallpaper in Jpeg format (1024x768 Truecolour) that is still larger than
any of the executables we were producing at Watcom. I did a quick
"Hello, World!" program in a few different compilers recently, using
only standard linkages and runtime libraries, and the resulting code was
larger than many of the interpreter executables we were writing at
Watcom (except for gcc under Linux, which knew to use the libraries). In
my day, these large executables were known as sloppy coding and memory
planning.

By default, MMOS2 turns your Line In volume down to nill in most cases.
If you can use some kind of a mixer to turn the volume level of Line In
up, I think it will solve your problem.

From: Michael DeBusk <debu4335@dpnet.net>

I'm an associate trainer for a seminar company. Currently, we record our
seminars on cassette. This has the obvious limitations of sound quality,
difficulty editing, and every-45-minute tape swapping.

I'm wondering how this could be done on a PC. Somehow dumping the audio
to a large hard disk, editing the file, and dumping the finished product
to tape or CD. My challenge is, I have no clue what hardware or software
is available for this, or how to set the whole thing up.

Can anyone help?

Please respond in e-mail as well as the group, as my mail server
sometimes drops messages.

Thanks.

I just installed a 13.5 GB IBM 7200 rpm drive without a problem. It
installs just like a 130 MB drive, just a larger partition(s) :). I
used the DANIS506.ADD driver rather than the IBM1S506.ADD driver but the
need for this is a function of the controller chipset (AMD Irongate/VIA)
in my case rather than the disk drive.

The problem with my Yamaha CDRW4416S was the firmware level. Once it had been
bought up to the latest level, WSeB recognised it with no problems at all.

In case anyone else is thinking about going through the same process, I have
one piece of advice: the flash update/utility that is downloaded from Yamaha
is a WINZIP self extracting executable. It will require a flavour of Windows
to extract it. This is a bit odd since it is labelled as the DOS download
suitable, allegedly, for Unix and other OS's. If I didn't have a copy of
WinNT 4 on another machine I wouldn't have been able to extract the files.
So, that makes sense then...

The only other problems I had were self inflicted ie: trying to create a DOS
boot diskette with SCSI support for an Adaptec 2940 controller when I
actually have an Adaptec 7890 Ultra2 SCSI embeded controller! DOH!

Thanks to everyone that gave me suggestions on this.

Roly.

Hi Roly,

I haven't looked at that Yamaha update (I have the 4416S 1.0g
firmware in a plain zip file) but you can usually unzip
self-extracting executables. Try unzip -l on it. unzip reports an
error for something unknown at the beginning -- that's the unzip
program -- then processes the rest of the image with no problem.

Cheers,
Peter

As a Yamaha user, I'm interested in this also. I haven't burned a multisession
cd on it yet and haven't tried to access a multisession rom either. But if it
ever comes to pass, I'd like to know how...

Using a hex editor and browsing os2cdrom.dmd I can easily find the brand names
that Anssi mentions. As far as I can tell, all that needs to be done is over-
writing one of the existing brand names with "YAMAHA" and that should do the
trick... What makes me uncertain is that some specific drive models are
mentioned in the file also... Does my Yamaha drive need to be listed that way
also? If so, what do I add in there... 4416, CDR4416, etc.?

We'll see...

Keep me posted on this one, Please? :')

The easiest way is to download the device driver development
kit from http://service.software.ibm.com/ddk/ and change
the source code for os2cdrom.dmd and re-compile it.

You have to register,, but there is no cost and there
is a copy of MASM 6 and MSC 6 available to do the
compile.

As far as I know, the problem I described concerns SCSI drives
only. But, maybe you can edit "Cyberdrive" or whatever your drive
identifies itself as into os2cdrom.dmd and see if it makes a
difference.

Sorry for the confusion I may have caused. I was referring to the
articles that were posted to my original post of which is the best
RWCD unit for OS2 and all I got was some articles which did not
address the question at all.

So is there anyone who "wants to stick their neck out" and tell me "in

What do you expect people to say? If a drive works, it works. Figure out
the software you want to use, and pick a supported drive.

Probably with trivial ease....While you await the definitive answer why not
indulge in some initiative, a little dangerous adventure perhaps and
experiment yourself?
By inference from Anssi's statement: Take a hex editor (after backing up
original OS2CDROM.DMD first and ensuring your alternative means to boot are
still functional<g>) look near top of file and observe first section with
the brand names listed in 8 byte field padded with blanks and delimited by
null and then next section for make/model with 24 byte fields again padded
with blanks and delimited with null.
Select brand you're not using and overtype ensuring correct padding and
field length retained. Optionally (cos I'm obviously guessing<vbg>) do same
with make/model if necessary.....
Ensure relevant Device Manager driver is renamed/used and reboot......

In the unlikely event your system gets utterly shafted, then make a mental
note to be a little more methodical in your backup philosophy next
time<g>....

Ah well done Mr Saari! - you appear to have identified the cause of that
specific restriction that I futilely intimated to Sam Deitweiler over a year
ago without any success.....<vbg>.He presumably deemed it so obvious that it
didn't warrant an answer and the person I was setting it up for was quite
satisfied with shuffling drivers around as a kludgy solution! :-(

and Phillips....and Hew... and... <g>

The "inference" above that RSJ was not for SCSI drives was presumably not
intended I hope and purely just my comprehension problem in young Anssi's
slightly ambiguous statement?Presumably "available" implies you can no
longer obtain Gear and Unite versions except via "old stock" or
used/auctions? Unite being defunct and not knowing whether Gear still
bothers including OS/2 in it's multiplatform CD or is even still in the
business itself?
So as the same friend that I setup a CD RW for a year or so ago is having to
look at replacing his (intermittently) mechanically defective SCSI unit
soon, what OS/2 CD R/W software now comes bundled with appropriate SCSI
hardware (or IDE if he is reluctantly forced to go that route)? I suspect
the answer is none.....but....?
Alternatively does the last Gear 3.x and Unite versions still work with some
of the more popular(Yamaha?) and reliable latest SCSI drives(albeit without
being capable of writing some of the latest recording extension formats
obviously)?

Now I could test a potential retailers initiative and ask them that specific
question, but I suspect I won't even get past the inevitably predictable:
"Whats OS/2, Sir?" response!...... <yawn> :-(

Thanks , I eventually found -

"Sound Blaster Pro Mixer" PMMIXER.ZIP

on my Hobbes CD. This may be old (1994) but it is a very handy
utility for anyone with a Sound Blaster card. I can alter the line in volume
and
It gives fine control of the overall sound level. It will even set left
and right channels independently, something the standard volume control
will not do. RECCOMENDED.

Maybe you're referring to Anipodec or some such thing (I don't exactly
recall either). I think it is now bundled with the QuickTime package.

All right, I will... I shopped around for brands to consider. There
were three brands that I followed. "T" brand Teac? expensive I was told
but very good. The other two were Yamaha and Ricoh. I bought a Ricoh
because I found a good sale on at the time. $201 with shipping for the
7040S. I have read emails and news posts that several were successful
with each of the three RW drives. I'll install it when I get my fixed

Yep, AnPoCODEC, that was it! And since I've already got QuickMotion/2,
I just have to figure out what my AnPo registration number is, and I'm
all set.

Thanks!

For the record let me state that I'm clueless about C. It looks like
voodoo to me. FORTRAN, BASIC, I understand. C, not.

Think it's possible to port the recently released open source code for a
LINUX SoundBlaster Live to OS/2 and make it work?

I just compiled the driver yesterday and it works fine, but no bells and
whistles of course.

Yes, as long as it doesn't call any specific unix routines, procedures or
programs. And if it accesses any files, remember to change the back-slash to
a forward-slash.

Yea it should be easier than porting from Win95/98 source. But I would
wait a few more weeks, the folks at RedHat tell me "a cleaned up
version should be out soon that gets rid of a lot of the
windows-esque pain and obfuscation."

Well wouldn't know what was specific to UNIX and what wasn't. I guess it
would take some sort of translator or manual tranlation and an OS/2 C
compiler.

OK. Some of you guys that are C gurus get going and post it on Hobbes :-)

It should certainly be possible, inasmuch as the Linux driver reveals
the necessary programming details.

Much of the actual code would no doubt have to be rewritten, though,
as drivers rely heavily on hooking into the kernel, and Linux has a very
different kernel architecture than OS/2.

AFAIK, anyway. I do know C, but I know virtually nothing about low-level
programming like kernels and device drivers.

Subj: Who posts hardware ratings?

From: rgibson@ix.netcom.com (Ron Gibson)

Does anyone know of a site that rates hardware for PC's similar to the
magazine Consumer Reports?

I've tried a few sites and found a few ratings but either the list of
hardware is very spotty or it's a nightmare wading through all of the
links.

BTW, I hope the wide cross posting doesn't annoy anyone but this
has been one of the most frustrating things I've searched for on the
net.

I can't really take the credit for this, since I got the hint from the
porter of cdrecord, Chris Wohlgemuth.

That's fundamental to Usenet. It's annoying sometimes, but in the end,
people will talk about what they want to talk about and which might
not be what you want to talk about.

> So is there anyone who "wants to stick their neck out" and tell me "in

Well, in my completely subjective opinion, the Ricoh MP7040S is the
best, for the reason that it's the only CD writing drive I've had. I
picked that particular model since it has SCSI interface, supports
CD-Text and overburning, but those features I haven't used in OS/2 and
don't know if they are usable here either. Cdrecord maybe supports
CD-Text, but I don't know how to use it...

As a bonus, the MP7040S can be upgraded to MP7060S by software, which
means 6x write speed on CDR instead of 4x. Pretty cool, but doesn't
always work.

The best place I've found is Tom's Hardware. Search for "Toms Hardware"
on Yahoo or try http://www.tomshardware.com. Basically he collects info
from all systems and OSs. You can compare everything from CPUs to mobos.

  Enjoy,
