Forget I even mentioned it. WPFolder can't be deregistered. :)

Well, this is assuming that WPFolder is even storing anything in your
INI files, or that they are even the source of the problem.

However, no, so long as you run this from a command prompt within the
WPS, you won't lose your desktop.

Well, the problem here is that AFAIK Object Desktop overrides and
replaces (parts of) the WPFolder class (at least when you have certan
features installed, such as the enhanced folders). Personally, I don't
know enough about Object Desktop to know what effect it might have on
how folders are opened by default, but it might be worth uninstalling to
see if the problem clears up by itself.

I'm still thinking on your problem - but if you're using OD, it might
be worth your while to post a message about your problem to one of
StarDock's newsgroups to see what sort of response you get.

Indeed to the PS, I dont want to change a solid MB either.

As for the HX chipset, you may remember our problems with IBM1s506.add
back when Sam Detweiler was responding here. I guess it was a year or so
ago and Sam noted a problem that the driver had with what he called
"certain planars". Since we all had the same problem, that is the sniffer
took several minutes to read the chip set, it occurred to me that the
problems with pmmerge.dll may be connected.

I dont really know why or if this is true, but the long arm of coincidence
seems to be at work.

As you said it was a guess.

PS. If you are thinking of changing MBs you would be wise to stick with
ASUS. They seem to be the only one to have an OS2 compatible BIOS.

Regards.

There is a similar problem, dunno if it's the same. The built-in image
viewer chokes on certain .JPG's. Those that it does decode are of inferior
quality compared to that with other viewers. (Try one side by side with
WebEx).

You can view them with WebExplorer or Netscape.

A better solution is to get PMView/2. It's shareware, but if you rush, you
can still get lifetime registration. A bargain!

Subj: Thinkpad 770 and OS/2 drivers

From: grinnell@acunet.net

I've been experiencing some minor troubles running Warp 4.0 FP 8 on my
Thinkpad 770. (223MHz w/ 96MB)

1. I installed Netscape 4.61 and have been experiencing some video corruption
in
the application's window, especially if I scroll down/up a web page. There is
corruption in the way the text is rendered as well as corruption in the scroll
bar
itself. I'm using the most recent drivers available from the Thinkpad Device
Driver
Matrix. I seem to remember someone posting that the problem lies with the
crappy
video drivers and not with Netscape itself. Since many are running Netscape
4.61
without these issues, I'm inclined to agree. I tried resorting to GRADD
drivers, but
I had to use the universal GRADD driver and it was too slow for my taste.
Anyone
have a suggestion?

2. IBM still has not saw fit to provide a V.90 upgrade to it's ACP modem
driver
for OS/2. They've had one for Windows for some time now, but I'm stuck with
the original 33.3k driver under OS/2. Anyone out there know if they EVER plan
to
release an upgrade? I sent a request to IBM months ago, but have not received
a
reply. I know I could simply us a PCMCIA 56k modem, but why should I need to
when the ACP modem was made to software upgradable.

3. I've had some trouble getting the PC Card director to work properly. I've
got
a MicroTek scanner (an E3) and I've been trying to link to it using an Adaptac
1460C PCMCIA card. The card services seems to be recognizing the SCSI card,
but
not the scanner. (It is properly termininated and I've checked the SCSI
address...
it works OK under Win95 booted from another partition and using the same
hardware)

I'm guessing it's a driver issue, but the docs for the scanner aren't much
help.
I'd appreciate it if anyone with some experience here could point me in the
correct direction.

Aside from these minor issues, I've found it a pleasure to use OS/2 on this
Thinkpad. Sure apps like Visual Age Java 2.0 could run faster, but I'll
sacrifice a
bit of speed for the portability. [Come to think of it isn't this what Java
itself does?]

Thanks for any help...

Jeff

Right - NT/Win9x use a completely different style of BIOS call to
get memory information now; you can check the WWW site listed earlier

I sometimes have a solitaire-type card game (fmcrd320.zip by Felix
Maschek) up on my screen. Starting with FP12, after playing for
a while, my system would repetitively perform "disk activity" about
every three seconds while an unfinished card game had the focus,
whether or not I had interacted with the game.

At about the time I put in the PMMERGE from pmr00052, this unwanted
"disk activity" went away. I have no idea why FP12 was doing this
(annoying to me) periodic "disk activity".

The easiest thing to try is to go into the preferences and set all your CACHE

If this fixes the problem, then get SCACHE. It is easy to install and a lot

Perhaps. I guessed in some posts with Ivan Adzubei in Moscow that the
problem with NS 461 crashes were related to ----get this---- Pmmerge.dll
and the intel HX chipset. This is because I remembered that we had the
same MB. In our case an ASUS with the HX chipset. Great MB.

But...I still have FP5 running and do not have any problems with NS
crashing. In fact it is solid as can be. Those of you who have FP12
installed are apparently suffering. Understand I do not know what the

However, Irv, the well known owner of the fixtool posted a revised
pmmerge.dll on testcase. That is gone by now but can be gotten slowly
from Ivan's page in Moscow. Reports form Moscow indicated some
improvement.

It's hard to say what the reasoning was. Unfortunately, since it was
documented AND implemented
that way way back when (i.e. at LEAST since OS/2 2.0 and maybe before), we're
stuck with it. There's
no possible way for me to change this behavior, even though I personally hate
it. As I mentioned to another customer who was recently upset about this, you
just have to use "cp" or something, instead.

I have built three OS/2 Warp v4 systems using DFI Baby AT format
motherboards. Two are using the DFI P5BV3+ (rev C) and the third
uses a DFI K6BV3+. All three systems are very stable (no crashes

I have been able to get all my Java based applicatons to work with the
newly released Java Runtime Environment for OS/2.

I'm not sure about Netscape 4.61. If I try to edit the Java preferences
and point to e:\jre11\dll\javri.dll in place of e:\java11\dll\javai.dll,
I get an error message. I used the editor on prefs.js and liprefs.js to
set up the following:
user_pref("os2.ibmjava.java.path", "E:\\JRE11\\dll\\JAVRI.DLL");
and this seems to be holding. However, I am not sure if it is working.
I could use a good test site for checking out Java applets. Any
suggestions?

How about an ELIMINATE_STUPID_RENAMES switch in CONFIG.SYS, so those who

Well, if you can still find them, I'd suggest the FIC 503+. I run Warp

FWIW, I haven't seen this NS/2 problem at all on my system. I'm up for

Subj: OS/2 <-> SAMBA problem solved

From: usenetmail3@turbolink.net (Mike)

This is not actually a problem with OS/2, but it is a problem with OS/2
machines
connecting to Samba servers.

After upgrading to the latest Samba version (2.0.6) on my Linux machine to see
if they fixed the FindFirst/FindNext bug with a connecting OS/2 machine, I
found that it was still present. So, I decided to look through the code to
see
if I could find where the problem is, and I did in a relatively short amount
of
time. First, let me describe the problem. When doing a DIR /S X* on a Samba
mounted drive, it returns immediately with "File not found" without even
searching sub-directories. Whe logging the drive with a program like ZTree
Bold, it would fail with multiple "Critical Error [2]" dialog boxes.

I tracked this down to the following section of code in trans2.c:

  /*
   * If there are no matching entries we must return ERRDOS/ERRbadfile -
   * from observation of NT.
   */

  if(numentries == 0)
  {
    dptr_close(&dptr_num);
    return(ERROR(ERRDOS,ERRbadfile));
  }

Simply changing the return value from ERRbadfile to the correct response
(ERRnofiles) solves this problem.

I don't know how wide-spread the problem was (it didn't seem to affect samba
shares mounted through TVFS).

If you have any questions, email me.

The video drivers provided by IBM never gave me any problems at all.
The Netscape I am running is the 128 bit encryption version.

I have never had any problems linking this with the PCMCIA mdoem. I
used to use the Adaptec 1460 with a SyJet 1.5 but that was before I
bought a docking station, after which I used the internal SCSI adaptor
which was much faster. The driver for the card came from Adaptec.

it would probably meet with a wider audience.

same SUN ad on the same page again and it would not repeat.

However, this morning I did get the same SUN ad on the same City News
page and it froze the system completely. Only the mouse and C-A-D
worked, nothing else.

This time however, it did leave quite a lot in POPUPLOG as follows:-

That's why it is ideal for our BIOS problem.
The BIOS problem turns out to be related to your mobo manufacturer.
BIOS patches from after October 1999 should now be compliant to the updated
ACPI standard, which is compatible again with the OS/2 way (and DOS 6, NT3.5)

of interogating the BIOS.
In the mean time, use Daniela's patch. I tried it on my Gigabyte GA-5AA (bios
1.2, june 1999), and it works just fine. Daniela also included MEMTEST.exe,
which shows you the results of various BIOS calls, source code included.
Might be usefull to 'convince' your MoBo manufacturer it's their BIOS
problem, and not your inability to run their MoBo.
So if you want to run an Athlon system, you're no longer restricted to the
ASUS K7-M.

OS/2 forever !

Hello Mike,

we have the same problem. We are testing at the moment samba servers
under Linux and AIX, and have experienced this problem.

If I do a 'DIR LA* /S' from a Win NT box all works fine, but if I do
this from OS/2 I got the error msg SYS0002 File not found.

We are direct connected to the samba server without TVFS. I think this
problem concerns all OS/2 clients and you should report this error to
teh samba team.

Thanks, Daniela

And this points out the "drawbacks" when the manufacturer of an
operating system no longer provides "instant service" unless the
customer signs up for an expensive maintenance plan.

What happened here was that BIOSes have changed and no longer
provide a certain capability that they *did* provide when Warp
first came out. Without Daniela Engert, who knows __when__
IBM would have provided a fix for this incompatibility.

    Go to IBM's driver site
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak/ and download
idedasd.exe. Or go to Hobbes (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu) and get
danis506.zip. These are the most current driver versions and can handle
drives 8GB and up.

supersite (http://www.os2ss.com), this morning.

I use warp4, but I always do fix packs under a normal boot system. It
has been a long time since I even tried a standalone boot
installation.

I don't know much about the Matrox stuff, but I do know that there are
a few problems (seems to me that I heard something about problems with
the latest version, but I don't know the details). If you managed to
get it to "work" with the VGA driver, that would indicate that the
Matrox driver might have something to do with your problem.

Perhaps someone else has more information???

Hi,
You will get the Error "Unsupported java Version" in Netscape, if Java
is not installed properly. Check the java version on your system. You
can do this by typing "Java -fullversion" from the command prompt. Check
also what's the ouput of Netscape's Java Console. Click on "Communicator
-> Tools -> Java Console".

Hi,
 Sorry for sending it twice.
You will get the Error "Unsupported java Version" in Netscape, if
Java is not installed properly. Check the java version on your system.
You
can do this by typing "Java -fullversion" from the command prompt.
Also i would like to know what's the output of Netscape's Java Console.
Click on "Communicator -> Tools -> Java Console".

As you know Netscape on OS/2 uses the java installed on your system and
if the Native
installation is not proper Netscape shows error.

You can also test the applet by using the appletviewer. If the applet
works fine with appletviewer
then there is a problem in Netscape.

Subj: Anybody using MEMMAN=COMMIT ?

From: stefand@lcam.u-psud.fr (Stefan A. Deutscher)

Hi all,

I tried yesterday the MEMMAN=COMMIT on my 40 MB RAM / 64 MB swap
starting size machine, under Warp 4 fp1.

I hoped it would make the system more reliable, hoped it would now in
FreeBSD fashion just kill apps trying to allocate more memory than I
have, rather than giving me the dreaded text mode pop-up letting me kill
some tasks chose by the system rather than by me. The online help on
MEMMAN=COMMIT reades something like: applications _can_ receive an
error-message when allocating more memory than there is.

Well. Warp boots and, as configured, grows the swap file to about 80 MB.
After doing some small things, tcsh complains 'No more processes' when I
try to run 'ls.exe' and refuses to run it. gawk says 'out of memory'.
I close some stuff, ls and gawk work again. I open some stuff, ls and
gawk don't work anymore.

I am happy, since this is what I wanted. I'd be happy to give it a gig
of swap or more just to make sure the system stays up and protects
itself agains overallocation.

Now I start e.exe. Ooops, it starts! No out of memory nothing message.
I start pmview. It starts. I start another copy of it. It starts.
I try to start IBM Works -- it sort of starts: It lets me choose a new
document and then goes away, without a good-bye or error message,
probably died of memory starvation.

I try NetScape 2.02. It starts. Better: it begins to load. Seconds later
the system hangs to the point where only C-A-D work.

Uhhhm ... where is the bug? Is it in all the apps? Wouldn't this be
something like cooperative memory management, not much better than
cooperative multitasking?

It seems apps are free to ignore the error-message, that is with
something like the following pseudo code

 malloc(x)

instead of

if (malloc(x) equals ERROR_CODE) then BAILOUT

it is still possible to mess up the system.

Or shouldn't the OS kill -- or at least refuse to start new -- stuff in
order to stay up itself? I am used to that kind of behaviour from AIX,
which documents very well that IBM know how to implement a memory system
with an extreme level of robustness.

Does anybody actually use _and_ benefit from the COMMIT setting?

 Cheers,
              Stefan

Ahh, I forgot something: In a cmd.exe window, ls and gawk worked just
fine. In a tcsh window, on the other hand, sh.exe told me once in a
while "Can't fork. Trying again." This makes me wonder whether perhaps
the fork() call duplicating the environment and what not always tries to
allocate a few MB and hence thinks it's out of memory way before e.exe.
All sh, tcsh, ls, and gawk are compiled with emx/gcc.

Cheers,
           Stefan

Subj: Re: How to use more than 64MB under OS/2?

From: ggpalmer@my-deja.com

OS/2 and Windows NT/9x use different BIOS calls to
determine how much memory is available. OS/2 uses
INT 15h,AX=E801h while Windows uses INT 15h,AX=E820h.

Award has had support for the E801 call since late in
1995. Recently, though, this support was made
conditional on ACPI in order to pass an Intel
"Component Validation Test". In other words a BIOS
with ACPI support could not have E801 support. Very
recently (October), this code was refined to allow
the E801 support to be included even if ACPI is
supported.

In summary, your BIOS doesn't have support for the
runtime call OS/2 needs to correctly determine how
much memory above 64MB is available. It is possible
that a BIOS upgrade from Gigabyte might fix this.

Remember, this is OS2JRE. There is no JAVA.EXE, only JRE.EXE. JRE -d
is documented as being the way to get the version, but it doesn't seem
to work. JRE -d spits out a bunch of stuff and the pertinent
information rolls out of the window.

From: mnieuw@my-deja.com

Hi,

The last week I have occurances of files being completely wiped to
zero. This happens to both object and executable files. An executable
can work fine one afternoon, when I come in the next morning and
power-up the machine, it won't work because it's all set to zero. I
never had this before. I have just applied FP12, but can't imagine this
is caused by a fixpak. These are files build with Watcom C . I have't
had it happening with other files. Any ideas what may cause this?
Has anyone else problems with FP12 and files?

Thanks, Mat Nieuwenhoven

It will only display 8 at one time, but you could have thousands of
fonts installed behind the display. Clicking Edit Font allows you to
select which font (and the size) to display, in the selected
posistion, from all of the installed fonts. All of the installed fonts
will be available to any program that supports changing fonts.

Hope this helps...

A warp 4 fp12 level os2ldr (which should work for FP 10,11,12 at least) is
available for the moment as
ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/e820ldr.zip. This contains an
os2ldr, which rerplaces the current (readonly/hidden) file. Make sure you
back up your current os2ldr and that you have a boot floppy before messing
with this!

Here's what I want to know:
	1) If this os2ldr BREAKS an existing configuration (e.g. won't boot
or reports less memory than
before if your current BIOS supports OS/2 mem > 64mb
correctly already).
	2) If your BIOS does NOT currently currectly show OS/2 the memory

Please respond in the newsgroup. Please DON'T inundate me with stuff that
won't help me with the above questions.

Only in the drag-n-drop window. The actual number of fonts that can
be installed is effectively infinite. The more fonts installed, the more
RAM that is used (and disk space, of course).

From: "Marcus, Aviva and Rhiannon" <us@appo.demon.co.uk>

Hi.

It's just one of those questions that I keep meaning to ask, but
never get around to.

1) What does APAR actually stand for?
2) What do you thing it should stand for?

Another Programmer Accumulates Riches maybe?
Answers on a post CAD please.

I've used it, off and on on several systems, without any of the problems
you report. What it does, fundamentally as far as I can see, is to cause
space to be "committed" in the swap file for the projected memory demands
of any program you start, when you start it up. The swap file gets as large
as it ever will have to, probably, right when you start everything up.

You might try removing everything from your Startup folder and see what
changes?

I have run my older ThinkPad (slow HD, 486, 20MB) with and without it for
extended periods to see if it made any overall improvement. It was
different, but not necessarily better.

Each Font Palette is, but you can create as many more Font Palettes objects
as you want, and any of them will access the complete list of Installed
Fonts via the
Edit Font | Add dialog.

Not many applications accept dragged fonts very well for anything other
than the appearance of control buttons and menus, but I'm happy to say that
DeScribe is one of the best. It's really easy to create a Font Palette
customized for a particular document style, say, "Monthly Newsletter", and
keep it in a "Work Area" folder along with the template for that document
style, so that the "Newsletter Fonts Palette" opens when you start work on
your Newsletter. You can then make use of the Font Palette's ability to
drag fonts along with point size and extra attributes like Underline, and
any text that is hilited will instantly change to display the newly
assigned font.

The ancient Poets animated all sensible objects with Gods of Geniuses,
calling them by the names and adorning them with the properties of
woods, rivers, mountains, lakes, cities, nations, and whatever their
enlarged & numerous senses could perceive. And particularly they
studied the genius of each city & country, placing it under its mental
deity. Till a system was formed, which some took advantage of and
enslav'd the vulgar by attempting to realize or abstract the mental
deities from their objects; thus began Priesthood. Choosing forms of
worship from poetic tales. And at length they pronounc'd that the Gods
had order'd such things. Thus men forgot that all deities reside in
the human breast.

What MEMMAN=COMMIT does is reserve space in the swap file for a
process' memory request(s). The default method is to allocate the memory
but, unless it is actually used, it is not committed. This means that
programs can ask for huge amounts of memory, use only a little, and the
system will not thrash itself to death swapping to disk, or have the
swap file grow to olympian proportions.
When COMMIT is active, likely tcsh cannot fork a process because not
enough space exists in the swap file to satisfy the allcation request.
The program can then either ask for less memory, or blow it off.

Well, Scott, first, let me thank you for at least being around listening
to our gripes.
<p>I've emailed you before concerning Traps I was having with my WS4eB
server, which you forwarded on to Rodney - thanks.
<br>From the 3 crash dump files I sent him, he basically said it was a
hardware problem, and I should look into finding problems with the hardware.
<br>First, let me say that this EXACT same computer ran on OS/2 Warp Server
Advanced for over a year, with absolutely no problems whatsoever.&nbsp;
To think that a hardware problem could occur simultaniously to the exact
DAY when I "upgraded" (loose term there...) to WS4eB would be a pretty
big stretch, but, I'm willing to go along with it (and it gave my boss
the incentive to turn loose of the checkbook for a month while I put together
the new server - always a good sign ;-).
<br>Now, one month later, I have a new AMD K6/2 450 with 192MB of memory,
37GB of disk, 2-100BT network cards.... nice, and fast.&nbsp; ;-)
<p>Problem:&nbsp; From the moment the system was started, I have had crashes
at odd times.&nbsp; Sometimes it will run for hours (once it even ran an
'entire' nite), but in the past 3 days, the system has probably crashed
on the order of 50 times.
<p>I believe I have installed about all of the patches into the new system
that I got from you, but,.... "sorry charlie, no tuna for you".&nbsp; I
have to make some decisions soon, do I tough it out till things get fixed,
or cave, and switch back to Server Advanced?&nbsp; Was, and am still, really
hoping to get things straightened out, 'cause in this server configuration,
I could really use the JFS dynamic disk expansion thing.

OK, Scott. I tried it. I don't see any difference.
Here's what I've got.

Motherboard: DFI 586ITBD Rev. AD+
Chipset: Intel 82430TX PCISet
BIOS: Award Modular 4.51PG
      12/11/97 - i430TX-2A59ID4BC-00
CPU: Pentium 133
RAM: 2x32M + 2x16M 60ns SIMMs

If you want to know more about my hardware, just ask.
Other than your special OS2LDR, I'm at FP12.

The BIOS does have a setting for RAM > 64M. The
setting values are OS/2 and non-OS/2. I checked
after I posted something the other day and in fact,
to my surprise, I have this setting set to non-OS/2.
Despite that, Bob Eager's little utility reports that
it can see 95M + 640K, with both the 7/27/99 &
11/17/99 versions of OS2LDR.

Should I revert to the standard 7/27/99 OS2LDR? Does
this module participate in ongoing OS/2 operation?
Or is it used only during boot-up & never again?
Will it get reverted in the next FP? Or, if things
go well in this "public alpha test," will this be the
one in the next FP?

Speaking of the next FP, are you willing to quote in
public a ballpark estimate of when it will appear?
Am I correct in assuming it will include the
corrected PMMERGE.DLL that everybody has been all up

Shouldn't it report a version string? The old one
doesn't report one either, but I thought y'all were

To get pciky, I understand it to be a problem that IBM have accepted
is a bug in their software.

A bug report is known as a PMR.

Right. I know that ... I read the help on memman and comprehend it. :-)
That's only part of it. The docs also say that the process can receive
an error message when trying to allocate more memory than there is (I
interpret that as more than I have RAM + total SWAP possible in the swap
partition). Now, that is _exactly_ what I wanted. Allocate 1 GB of swap
(or what ever I find will be enough) and be sure that I can run what I
need to run, while making sure that apps with memory leaks or the likes
get the error message ... and exit. The latter doesn't seem to happen.

>When COMMIT is active, likely tcsh cannot fork a process because not
>enough space exists in the swap file to satisfy the allcation request.
>The program can then either ask for less memory, or blow it off.

Right. As intended. What I didn't expect was that certain apps are free
to ignore the message (the PMView author just replied telling me he has
so far not implemented it because there was no demand, but that it
should be easy), basically still allowing a code allocating too much
memory to bring the system to a halt, rather than the system bringing
the code to a halt.

That's all. So, for me, there is basically little reason to use COMMIT
as it is sort of a cooperative memory management switch, and not every
app I had in mind honors it.

 Cheers,
            Stefan

BIOSes with settings for OS2/nonOS2 tell me that they're implementing int 15
fcn e801. I should have been clearer about my intentions: For BIOSes that do
*not* implement this function, I will do a basic level of interpreting of
E801 info. Unlike Dani, I can't simply switch methods, as this would cause
other customers' systems to become less functional, potentially. If a BIOS
tells the os2ldr that it supports fcn E801, then I am forced to assume it
implements it fully and correctly.

I have not seen any indication of that type of problem with OS/2 at
any version, or level. Have you considered the possibility of a DOS
virus, and scanned everything on your system with a good virus
scanner??? While OS/2 itself is very virus resistant, any DOS, or
WinOS2 program you run is not resistant, and can do damage.

Hope this helps...

Subj: Memory Recovery Tool?

From: Felix Miata <bogus.due2UCE@atlantic.net>

When Netscape crashes, memory disappears, never to be restored to the
available pool without a reboot. I estimate this is somewhere around
5-10 Mb per crash, but it doesn't happen after every crash. It also
seems to happen just by using Netscape for more than a couple hours or
so without exiting and restarting it. Since I use it for news, mail and
browsing, this isn't so easy to remember to do. I reboot before swapper
growth is evident, usually when free RAM gets down below 30 Mb with
Netscape loaded. Swapper is set very small and I have 128 Mb RAM.

Is there some utility that will find zombie memory and make it available
again? I looked on Hobbes, but none of what I found seemed designed to
address this.

This change does not help. Theseus 3 reports 64mb while the system has 128mb.
Dani's patch worked for me, however. Interestingly, right after I applied the
patch and still had Theseus running, the composition window in Netscape where
I
tried to compose this reply broke. The included text did not appear, and I
could not shut the window. Then I had cascading menus appearing when I hit
anything with a menu on it.

Running FP12 on ALI M1541 AGP System Controller, AMD K6-2 400mHz, SciTech
Display Doctor beta 7.

Thanks for working on this.

What error messge?! You mean something like malloc() returning 0?
*Very few* application check results of malloc(). Moreover, most of
the time you cannot do *anything* if malloc() fails, since graceful
shutdown requires some memory.

So most applications will crash - and you do not know that whoever
crashes will be the rogue one - any application which is unlucky
enough to request memory at a bad moment will crash.

Don't know where it's documented, but you just put the options you want
for the DIR command.

Type DIR /? for the options. In Warp4 there is also an undocumented flag
/V, which will give you the attributes (archive, readonly, hidden, system)
in the directory listing.

I use

SET DIRCMD=/V/N

in my CONFIG.SYS. This makes the attributes display, and FAT directories
give the same columns.

Have fun.

Subj: Update - Re: Comm/2 keeps bringing down my system.

From: Steve Drewell <bd83h@bedford.waii.com>

After applying the "unofficial pmmerge.dll fix", I'm sorry to say that my
machine died again after about 4 days uptime whilst using Comm/2. Apart
from running the RC5DES client, I have used the machine for less than 8
hours in the past 4 days which makes it even more of a sad case that it
won't stay up.

So, what's the best course of action to solve this annoying problem?
Remove FP12 or just replace pmmerge.dll with a previous version (if so,
which)? Is FP12/pmmerge.dll the likely source of the problem or is it
Comm/2?

Cheers,
Steve

It seems that many of the GNU utils do. I just hoped that PM apps would
do that in general as well.

Well, if depends how much memory you're trying to allocate. If you ask
for 8 MB and have only 6 then I'd think a graceful exit should still
work.

>So most applications will crash - and you do not know that whoever

Okay, so it's really a coding problem. I'd really like an app that dies
to leave me a farewell note, but that the app has to do. On the other
hand, I'd like the bloody OS to refuse to start new apps if it is memory
starved, just as AIX or FreeBSD do. It _is_ possible, after all.

I had hoped OS/2 would have that capability. It seems that it does not.
I just know now that the COMMIT switch does not give me anything except
a larger swap file. This is a pity, but hey. I am not going to install
<OS of the day> now instead :-)

Cheers,

The VFAT driver doesn't work with OS/2 Server (warp 5), but i don't even

From: dmn@cheerful.com (Damiano Rullo)

Hi All,

Do someone knows about this incompatibility and a way to override it?

At the moment I'm using Warp 4 fix 9 italian, with s3 Virge (375/385
chipset) and HP LJ 1100 printer.
Installing IBM or Scitech GRADD video drivers causes many applications
to print a completely black page on teh Laserjet.
Removing GRADD fixes the problem but unfortunately the original s3
drivers have some palette problems with Warp4, while the GRADD do not
suffer these problems.
Thank in advance to anyone who can help me fix this?

From the dim recesses of my memory (such few cells as are still active):

    "Authorized Program Activity Report"

Translation: a PMR has been received by the appropriate group for that
product within IBM, and a decision has been made to allocate resources
to try to find a fix or workaround.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to look up "PMR" I suffered an ECC
error. (;-)

    "Program Maintenance Request"?

I assume this is a fix for Warp 4.0. I am hoping to find one for

Hi Ann:

You can find the basic formatting options through either "HELP DIR" or
"DIR /?" from a command prompt.

There is, however, at least one switch which doesn't appear in either:
/V. /V will cause the archived, system, hidden and read-only atribute
state to be shown with the files. For example:

	 6-04-99 11:53a <DIR> 339 -sh- Nowhere
	 6-14-99 2:34p 2,662 0 a--- NqCfg.log
	 6-04-99 11:50a <DIR> 15,784 ---- OS2
	 6-04-99 11:51a 51,132 0 ashr OS2BOOT

	I hope this helps!

"Problem Management Record" is what I was told, way back in Warp 3 rollout

Called a "Problem" for short.

System is a 450Mhz AMD K-6/2 with 192 Meg of memory.
1 - 4G system disk
1 - 13G E-mail disk
1 - 20G for HTTPD use.
1 - 100BT Digital Semiconductor Network card
1 - AMI Mach-64 video card, but running in standard VGA mode (till I get this
fixed)

This system is supposed to be our EMAIL / WWW / IRC / DNS / SYSLOG / SQL /
Authentication server for our ISP.

Well, I've gotten as far as EMAIL. We're using Hethmon Bros. InetMail.Pro,
and
have been successfully for nearly 2 years, on our old Warp Server Advanced
system,
which this system is supposed to replace. With the WS Advanced, we had the
entire
system running successfully since Feb of 98, and had no problems, with the
exception of the fact that our disk space needs kept growing, which meant that
in
the past 2 years, I have reinstalled / updated / added / ... to the WS system
on a
fairly continuous basis. Seemed to me that JFS was going to be the answer to
my
dilemma, so, since I had the 'Upgrade Protection' stuff on WS, I went for it.

Now, I can get the WWW / IRC / DNS / SYSLOG / SQL / Authentication stuff to
all
sit on one computer successfully, and have for 6 months or so. E-mail,
however,
causes fits. Whenever I install <just> the E-mail server on the system, with
nothing else, the system occasionally does a System Trap, which causes
unbelievable grief on the email system. "You can mess with anything else, but
don't mess with my email!" Paul Hethmon is at a complete loss to explain
this,
and since the EXACT same software, installed from the EXACT same files worked
on
Warp Server ever since we started, I am at a loss to say that this is a
failure in
the email software, since all I have to do is toss in the towel, and go back
to
the old WS software, and all will be OK.

My feeling is that its a problem with WS4eB, probably having something to do
with
the fact that the email server opens thousands of sockets per day, in its
operation, and I'm of the opinion that this is probably causing things to go
off
the deep end, somewhere.

Anyone else running WS4eB in a production environment? It worked great while
I
was testing it, and didn't begin these failures till I really put it under a
load
in the production system.

Yes, but not with JFS in use. I had some traps with the WSeB with
a JFS partition under test so I backed off converting the data files
to
a JFS partition.

Have you set the system up for a Ring 0 trapdump, and
sent that off to IBM for analysis?

Scott Garfinkle is currently working on JFS/kerrnel problems
and posted a couple of files on testcase a week ago for
general "beta" testing....

My setup recognizes Mail-Copies-To=never header. Just set it if you
do not want these copies. [I manually deleted the header from this
message, but of course I will not remember to do it the next time.]

I doubt it very much.

Yes, but you are asking for developer to make some pretty subtle
decisions. Most of the time this hope is futile.

I coded "graceful shutdown" support for Perl's malloc(), it will
automatically work for "large" allocations, and will work for "small"
allocations with hints from an application. But Perl allows for an
easy exception handling, which is not that easy for many other
languages.

But for most of programmers the idea that graceful shutdown "it is not
that hard" looks absolutely crazy. You indeed need to reconsider the
way you think about memory allocation to see the light of the day...

It's "Authorized Program Analysis Report" - and I still have some of the old
paper forms that were used for this way long ago.

I believe PMR is Problem Management Record.

You can find official definitions at www.ibmlink.ibm.com, click on WhatIs
and then search the Dictionary. APAR is in there but PMR is not...

Hi Russ!

Forget it. This problem is one of the all-time-greatest. There are hints
to change the both TIMER386MaxRes and TIMER286MaxRes entries (have a
look at the README in the root directory of your boot-drive) in
SYSTEM.INI (or was it WIN.INI?), to set IDLE_SECONDS and
IDLE_SENSITIVITY to maximum, but it never worked well here.
