Subj: Interconnection Lost

From: "Michael W. Wernicki" <michael1ww@earthlink.net>

Hello,

It seems after the installation of Staroffice 5.1 my Internet connection
was lost. The dialer seems to work; however, the applications using the
dialer are unable to access the Internet. One timing application gives
out a message that a server cannot be accessed.

Most likely some DLL was replaced by Staroffice. By the way, Star office
could not access the Internet.

Is there some way of updating the Dialer?

Is there a alternate OS2 dialer that I could use?

Mike

Subj: Re: OS2 protocol Stacs

From: "Simon Bowring" <sbowring+nospam@mpc-data.co.uk>

>Does anyone out there have any idea on the complete set of protocol
>stacks supported by OS2

Can you be more specific?

Do you mean:
What network operating systems does it support?
Which network transport protocols does it support?
What individual network protocols (at *all* levels)?
 or.... what (all different answers!)?

OS/2 has an "open" network driver model (NDIS 2.1) which allows
simultaneous support of virtually any protocols (much like NT
which uses a development of the the same NDIS model).

Out of the box, at the transport/link level, OS/2 supports 3 main
protocol families for LAN adpaters (ethernet/token ring/fddi etc):

tcp/ip How many protocols do you count this as, 1, 2, 3 (UDP and TCP
and IP, not to mention the higher level protocols?)
IPX/SPX Netware's 2 key protocols)
IEEE 802.2 aka DLC or LLC (on which NetBIOS and SNA *natively* run)

At higher levels it supports:

- Most of the common higher level internet protocols (SMTP,POP3,
  NNTP,HTTP,PPP,SLIP,DHCP,DDNS,SNMP at least)
- NetBIOS (on top of tcp/ip [tcpbeui], 802.2 [netbeui] and/or IPX/SPX)
- SMB (on top of NetBIOS using any of the above 3 transports)
- LU0-3, IBM 3270 and some other SNA stuff on top of 802.2
  (and almost certainly tcp/ip nowadays).
- Whatever Novell call their file sharing protocol (forgotten!)

And any 3rd party protocols (not sure).

"OS/2 Warp 4 is called the "Universal Client" by IBM because of
 its unparalleled out-of-the-box network connectivity:

Warp 4 connects to almost anything: it allows simultaneous connectivity
to LAN Server, Warp Server, Windows NT Server, Samba, Novell Netware,
Netware Directory Services, PCLAN Program, IPX/SPX, LANtastic for DOS
or OS/2, Warp Connect, Windows NT Workstation, Windows for Workgroups,
Unix and open systems via TCP/IP (including DHCP, DDNS,SLIP, SMTP,
SNMP, NNTP, HTTP), SNA, and NetBIOS."

[Note many of the above all use the same protocols: SMB on
NetBIOS/netbeui/802.2 or SMB on NetBIOS/tcpbeui/tcp/ip (or
both)].

OS/2 also supports "other" protocols like IrDA, PPP,
SLIP, and wireless protocols and the "parallel-port"
driver which don't run on a *conventional* LAN adpater,
but nonetheless are protocols (apart from parallel) and
do allow networking!

Hope this helps!

Simon Bowring

Subj: DB2/2.1 Connectivity problems between OS/2 and NT

From: "Jette Hannibal" <fam.hannibal@get2net.dk>

OS/2 warp connect 3.0 (Revision 8.264) via TCP/IP or NetBios.

I think that the problem resides in the layer between the operating system
and the database management system. But for now I am stopped cold without a
clue on where to go.

I'm positive that the TCP/IP configurations are correct on both client and
databaseserver. I have inserted port configurations in services files as
well as host names in the hosts files on both server and client. The OS/2
workstation (with the DB2 database) has a fixed IP adress which is
conneceted to the NNAME in the hosts file on both databaseserver and client.
The database is cataloged as remote.

I have tried the connection with NetBios as well. But the problem seems to
be the same. The client or client enabeler can not resolve the name and IP
adress to get a connection to the database whatever it is done from the
databaseserver (OS/2 workstation) or the client (NT 4.0. workstation)

I'm open to all suggestions

You are welcome to email me on fam.hannibal@get2net.dk

Sincerely

Kim

I heartily recommend NFTP. Although it is a text-mode program (a PM version
is now distributed, as well, but I haven't used it), it make using ftp sites
much more productive, and is available a great many operating systems,
though the original version started life as an OS/2 program.

Hey,

Take a sec to look at this site - http://www.KnowToday.com

This site has a novel concept of putting Internet users together in an
information exchange. This will never replace newsgroups, but it does offer a
new way for all of us with knowledge to share an opportunity to earn money for
it ! From what I can tell it's the newest form of auction - knowledge auction.

They have a pre-registration site up at the moment and are offering an
incentive plan where you get paid for successful referrals (so use my number
if this is of interest to you AAA969). Membership is totally free right now
and those of us that hop on the bandwagon early can benefit by being the first
people on.

You can go on their site and ask detailed questions or make money by answering
questions. They are designing the site with many different categories, so
almost anyone will be able to ask and answer questions.

It only takes a minute to join, so check it out at http://www.knowtoday.com/,
they explain everything on the web site. It's totally free !

Can I recommend cutting down on the newsgroups? I've set follow-ups to
comp.databases.ibm-db2 only, as it seems to be the only world-wide
newgroup that it is completely on-topic for.

The dbm cfg parameter, IIRC, that is relevant is the SVCENAME, not
NNAME. That alone may cause the problem.

I assume that, from the machine that will be the DB2 client, you can
"ping" the server. That is,

  ping db2.server.com

doesn't complain. If you're using NetBIOS, however, the command to try
is more along the lines of "net view \\db2server". As long as this
command doesn't tell you it can't find the other system, you should be
okay.

Well.. you said you were open...

I tried DB2 and never got passed some really stupid setup problems. This was
on Wseb...

My solution? I dropped it like a rock and went with mSQL and then eventually
moved it all to mySQL. Setup is a breeze, security good and... run's great.

I normally use WGET for all that stuff (plus it also regets HTTP

and then open a OS/2 window session and run it from there.

I have already posted my config files which do work, did you not see them?

Have you followed Lorne Sunley's advice?

You say PING works, so what doesn't. Does ping work with names or only with
IP addresses?

Have you setup your ISP's DNS for the other machines on your LAN?

Any suggestions on how to improve connection, how to connect at all in

So I fired up NS v2.02 and took a look. It's true!
In NS v2.02 the job listings display correctly and
the text information wraps itself mid-screen!

Before a refresh is issued I am asking the Netscape
Team (Mike Kapley, et all) to check out this problem
associated with v4.61 and correct it as quickly as
possible. If it is happening here then it must be
happening at other sites too.

From: Jim Hornbeck <horn@netcom1.netcom.com>

How do I get the ibm dialer (I have two of them) to work with a PPP
connection?
Apparently DOIP is corrupted on this machine and I'm not at all sure
where it resides on the original disk so I can reinstall it.

I've seen questions like this before and can't remember any of the
answers.
My limited understanding of doip is that I should see a ppp button when
I invoke it. nada. no ppp button.
I'm using an external usr veverything modem that works will with
all comm programs except doip.

With all the discussion about FTP does anyone (apart from me) worry that
FTP provides for no error checking (like Z-modem). While this is fine
when downloading software from a site as the exercise can easily be
repeated and faulty software is unlikely to run, it is much more important
and crucial when used for transferring data files.

This would depend on the size of your browser window.
The tables on the listing-pages are hard-coded to 600
pixels wide; if your window is narrower than 600 pixels,
the page will run off the right side of the window, with
a scrollbar to view what won't fit within the window.

Not to be contrary, but 4.61 handled word wraps on that listing from
courier/NT Roman 8 pt to 20 pt with wraps adjusting according to the
font. It did run over at 24 pt but at that size the search dialog
boxes on Hobbes are at least half off the screen and I get something
like 7 or 8 lines of text top to bottom on a page.

"Wrep Long Lines" on my copy of Comm 4.61 GA is the sixth
menu item on the View pull-down, just under "View Attachment Inline"
Where the View is the third menu item from the left on the main bar.

Isn't it like that on yours?

OK, most of the DSL modems in use are not routers. the telcos do not want to
get in the IP addressing business, so they use a bridging protocol. They
leave the IP addressing to the ISP's. Most are NOT routers. hence the
requirement of a HUB or proxy server to use more than one machine on the

to be honest, we don't give a rat's ass about what the ISP thinks or supports.
the DSL modem is going to hand you an ethernet connection carrying TCP/IP.
All that's required of your system is a fully configured NIC card supporting
TCP/IP. You will have to find out from your ISP if they are providing STATIC
IP addresses, DHCP, or if they're using NAT. that will determine your IP
setup in TCP/IP configuration folder.

There is talk of SBC (Pacific Bell) going to a PPP protocol across their DSL
line. that's the only place I think you'll actually NEED InJoy. InJoy is a
GREAT product, I have a registered version from my ISDN T/A days. Hell, if
windows can do it, of COURSE OS/2 can!

Open up the browser window, there is not this option. Wrap option is found

That's the composer or newsreader menu.
I think the problem at hand here is about the browser (navigator itself),
and unfortunatedly there are no wrapping options for that one (not in the view
menu anyway).

I sometimes get it (dependant on particular pages) on www.byte.com.
The text does not wrap, so I have to cut-&-past into an editor that knows how
to rewrap text.

OS/2 forever !

I checked the site, it is very poorly done. Even with HotJava it is
almost unreadable. Too bad, it looks like it could have some valuable
information for people seeking a job. It seems as though the source
documents were done with a combination of hard and soft carriage
returns. Like the people filling out a form online, some hit return some
let it wrap. Forcing it to left justify is pretty harsh as well.

I would not blame Netscape or the IBM crew for not being able to fix
that travesty. And don't tell me it looks good with NS2.02 because those
pages really stink.

I'm not the questioner, but that's not on mine - there's no "Wrap Long
Lines" under "View." There isn't even the other option you mention above.

Does the View menu change with different pages?

Thanks for the reply Jeff and if I was a bit too harsh I'm
sorry (others have pointed that out).

I have a 21" monitor and have it set to 1024X768. The
site recently changed hands with the sale of the newspaper
itself and prior to that, the listings were displayed properly.
It was very easy to just mark and paste a fax number into
PMFax and fire off a resume.

When the newspaper made the change the first few days
the listings were fine but after that they began to sail
off the right hand side of the page. I used composer
to create a 600 pixel table box and then copied the
displayed listings into the table so I could read them
without effort. The information you provide above
about the site using a 600 pixel table in their html
coding isn't being picked up by 'my' Communicator 4.61
for some reason. Maybe it does in the Windows version
but not in my OS/2 version.

I complained several times to the new webmaster and he
finally replied back saying he had received no complaints
and asked what browser I was using. When I said Communicator
for OS/2 v4.61 he replied the problem was with the browser,
not his site or his html coding.

I thought that baloney but decided one evening to fire up
NS/2 2.02 and see how it appeared. The listings came up
and wrapped correctly. That makes me believe the problem
is within Communicator 4.61 itself. So I went to check for
a "wrap text" feature but could only find it in Messenger,
not for the browser itself (could we add one please?).

So now, instead of copy/paste into Composer I open NS/2
and read them. It is just frustrating to have to use two
browsers for what should be a one browser job.

I am relieved to know the problem is one that others have
experienced (i.e., The Register) because I was beginning
to think it was my system or my release of C/2. You'd
think the listings on a 21" screen at 1024X768 couldn't
possibly be so long as to run off the right side of the
screen - but they do!

Thanks for all the replies. I now know the problem is an
acknowledged one and hope the next refresh offers a
correction of some kind.

Thanks to everyone for the responses!

Jeff

I am getting this message while using a dos communications program. I have
the com port set to COM1 only. I have ProComm using com2 only. I keep
getting this error message. Is there a setting I can use to correct this?

I think the problem may be in the page and not in Communicator. On the
pages that I compose (using Home Page Publisher), if you view the html
in an editor, there are no carriage returns in any of the text lines,
and Netscape will wrap the lines as necessary to fit the width of your
window. To see what I mean, go to http://pws.prserv.net/mckinnis/ and
start playing with the right boundary of your screen. The text will
wrap to fit the new window size.

It's been my experience that DOS ProComm 2.1? won't run on machines
which are 300Mhz or faster. Not even by booting from DOS in A: and
trying!!

I've noticed that the text on the Stardock home page spills over teh
right hand side now too -- as of the last few days. I'm using NS 4.61 GA
(128-bit encryption).
