From: zayne@omen.com.au (Mooo)

Are we left now with GRADD only or do some drivers for this beast
exist?

Awfully popular card, and I started getting used to the pretty
reasonable OS/2 support from S3 for other chips. Is this support
likely to die now that Diamond seems to own/influence them?

I write:

You should be able to use gradd80 drivers.
Use command:
setup virge
as S3Trio3D belongs to the Virge family.
However, there are reports that this does not work, then use the
gengradd driver.

Hi All,

I have been out of OS/2 for about 18 months but have a new project which
requires development in OS/2. In that time I've bought a new machine
which has an AGP card in it (Asus V3800 based on the Riva TNT2
chipset). Do the latest fixpacks support this card/bus. I am on a
fairly slow Internet connection so downloading the fixpacks is not easy
- will do so if I have to though.

I installed the Scitech drivers and it works properly.
The Scitech drivers did not properly identify the V770 but that
problem is fixed for the next beta.

Anyway even the VBE/VESA default stuff works well on the V770
and the mouse cursor is still visible when switching back to
the OS/2 desktop.

Another big plus is that the mouse cursor doesn't get all
jerky when scrolling in OS/2 Windows (eg long directory
listings). At last real hardware mouse cursors in OS/2!

I just installed SDD Beta 7 on my system (Matrox Millenium II AGB
connected to a Sony 17se), and couldn't get it to work properly at
1280x1024. The mouse pointer was out of synch; it pointed about 5 cms too
high, making it extremely hard to click anything. In general the screen
looked grainy, even at this high resolution.

Not wanting to sacrifice anything, I went back to the current Matrox
driver (2.31) which works fine at this resolution at 75mHz.

Anyone know whether 1280 is supported yet with this card?

The SDD/2 beta 9 works OK with my Millenium II 4 MB
card. It's a PCI card so that may make a difference.

Running at 1280 X 1024 X 65536

When I tried beta 7 I had a number of cursor related
problems that were fixed up with beta 9.

Hi again,

Ok, I have beta 9 installed now, and it works at 1280 x 1024 x 16m. The
only problem is I can't seem to get it to use the highest refresh rate my
monitor is capable of at this resolution, 75mHz. It seems now about 60mHz,
despite whatever monitor I select in the System notebook.

I have tried using GACTRL.EXE to adjust the refresh rate, but it doesn't
seem to have any effect. Any suggestions?

If I can't get 75mHz, I'll go back to the Matrox driver, as the flicker
annoying...

TIA

The only one around that seems to work most of the
time is the Hauppauge WinTV/PCI cards. They have
a TV tuner and composite video input and (depending
on the card) S-Video as well.

The drivers are "in beta" but seem to work well.

http://www.wdi.co.uk/os2tv/download.htm

The Warp 4 "VideoIn" application can use them to
capture live video files to disk.

There are also TV apps for the cards.

I can't help with the refresh rate. The DDC monitor I have
seems to max out at 60 Hz for the 1280X1024 resolution.

With the G400 card I have it seems to run at 60 Hz but
I really don't have any way to tell. The GACTRL
program shows 37.5 Hz for vertical refresh when I
try to adjust the rates.

There is supposed to be a new beta out soon. (rumours,
rumours) Maybe that one will have better handling on the
refresh rate handling.

Subj: Matrox Millenium II: runs VGA only?

From: pieter@world.std.com (Pieter Bras)

I tried out a Matrox Millenium II on my Warp 3 system and cannot get
anything but 256-color VGA (the Matrox "default" setting). Here is the
relevant system information:

OS/2 Warp 3 Connect, FP 40
Matrox Millenium II, 8MB
NEC MultiSync 5FGp monitor

What I want is 1152x864 @ 16M colors. I've tried this with the MGASET
utility and get only 640x480x8. Other resolutions fail in like manner.

The same card+monitor provided 1152x864x32 @ 75 Hz in Win98, so it isn't
a hardware limitation.

My old ELSA Winner 2000 Pro-X (4MB) also gave 1152x864 @ 16M colors
under Warp 3.

Why can't the Matrox setup give me better resolution and color?
TIA for any help.

Which monitor do you have selected?

You should be able to choose a standard vesa resolution and refresh
rate at the top of the MGASET monitor selection list.

That is correct. IBM's GRADD driver distributions do not work with
MGA-G200 or G400 cards. "MGAGRADD" appears to be only for older (Mil-II
and previous) cards, and "GENGRADD" won't work either.

If you want GRADD, you have to use the Scitech drivers.

> Can someone please confirm that the Scitech drivers work with a Matrox

Yes, the Scitech drivers work, and quite well, too. My Hauppauge TV card
works (with the Abbotsbury drivers) with these. The picture quality is
MUCH better than with the Matrox drivers, and CPU performance is improved
as well.

However... I did have to reinstall the Abbotsbury WinTV drivers after
switching to Scitech, and then edit CONFIG.SYS as described in the
GRADD.DOC that comes with said drivers.

Also, you must use either StWTV or YADTV/2 to get the improved TV quality.
These are both essentially free, but be warned that they seem a bit less
stable using the GRADD drivers. (StWTV garbled the picture, and YADTV
kept crashing if I didn't follow a very precise order for turning on the
TV window.)

Of course, all of these things are still very much under development, so
expect them to improve over time.

Any luck Ray? I'm trying to get the same card to work on my K6-2 350 system

After a tedious install of SciTech SDD b9 my screen was unreadable - thick

After an equally tedious uninstall of SDD, I'm back to square one.
Hope you have better luck.
BTW SciTech has its own news server - news.scitechsoft.com and the NG that
is the most popular re os/2 drivers is the os2.beta. Be forewarned that
ironically, there seems to be a complete lack of corporate support.

NEC 5FGp. I also selected a few other high-performance monitors from
NEC and Hitachi. Same result every time.

>You should be able to choose a standard vesa resolution and refresh
>rate at the top of the MGASET monitor selection list.

Thanks. I tried this, but again no success. No matter which resolution
I choose, it comes back with 640x480x8. I can see that it is doing
*something*, because the picture size and position (and refresh rate)
vary somewhat from selection to selection. Also I note that 1152x864 is
not offered as a VESA resolution.

Interestingly, the Matrox Millenium II and the Elsa Winner2000/ProX
cards both use the same RAMDAC -- Texas Instruments TVP3026 (220MHz).

I have a number of Win98 boxes running really well with this Matrox
card, and thought it would be nice to standardize cross-platform on one
mfr., particularly as Elsa no longer develops OS/2 drivers. However the
old Elsa OS/2 drivers seems to me a lot more competently written than
the current Matrox stuff. Just my opinion, of course.

Still looking for advice. If I can't get the Matrox to behave soon, the
Elsa card goes back in. Have to get productive again.

Just out of curiosity, what version of the Matrox driver are you
using?

I just recently replaced my old Mystique 4M PCI card with the G400
Dual Head. On both cards I was able to get 1024 X 768 @ 70Hz with the
2.31 driver.

You could also try flashing the BIOS on the card and see what that
gets you.

The thought had occured to me, but how do I get the latest flash BIOS
code, and the utility to update the card?

I tried something else: installed Warp 4 on an empty partition, then
installed the Matrox 2.31.100 driver. What do you know, it works,
giving me 1152x864x32 @ 75 Hz.

But has anyone gotten this card to worlk with Warp 3, in anything better
than VGA 640x480x8? The readme.os2 file in the driver package implies
that it's supposed to work with "previous OS/2 versions".

Should be available from the Matrox site. that's where I got it from.
You'll probably need to boot to pure DOS and run the flash utility.

All I can tell you is that in both Warp 3 and Warp 4, using either the
Mystique or the G400 with the 2.31 driver, I have 1024 x 768 @ 70Hz
with 65K colors. I could even go to 16M colors, but I really don't see
the point.

There's got to be something else screwing this up for you. I just

BTW, I'm posting this using ProNews/2 under Warp 3. I purposely boot
the Warp 3 partition just to make sure that the card works in both
setups.

Fedor,

This is a classic example of how MS polluted the entire tank. ATI used to be a
preeminent vendor of OS/2 video cards and their drivers. In their drive for
worldwide dominance, MS made it foolhardy at best, and unprofitable at worst
to
strive to develope contending products.

AS a fitting payback, after ATI became too lazy to develope OS/2 drivers, they
likewise became lame in their WINxx driver development (decay of the soul is
hard to arrest, much like gangrene) and now most people who demand
performance,
demand otherwise than ANTI. To those childish lads up in Thornhill Ont, I can
only say "See Ya, and I hope it's a very bumpy ride down!!"

Now for your problem, I have an ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV, and trying to
re-install the ATI drivers was always impossible after install of the Gradd
drivers, or SCITECH until I tried the following procedure:

AT an OS/2 c prompt type <setvga> if you get any cues " installed driver is
newer than driver to be installed, overwrite?" select "yes" on every occasion.

Then reboot, next

Select "selective install" with OS/2 install CD in place. Select "Standard
VGA" for the display driver, and again if prompted " installed driver is
newer,
Overwrite?" select yes on every occasion.

Then, reboot, next

With ATI OEM CD in place, follow the manufacturers instructions for the driver
install. This time, also select yes any time you are asked if you wish to
overwrite any newer target files. Note: you are now killing various Font
fixes
made by the OS/2 fixpaks

Reboot, make desired selections, reboot again, enjoy.

If you wish to install any fix pak newer than 7 hereafter, welcome to fixpak
hell my friend, you've got to repeat the above procedure everytime you apply a
new fixxpak

Hope this helped

The best place I've found is Tom's Hardware. Search for "Toms Hardware"
on Yahoo or try http://www.tomshardware.com. Basically he collects info
from all systems and OSs. You can compare everything from CPUs to mobos.

  Enjoy,

  David
