It means that in that DOS session you have not APPENDed the directory where
the message files are, that's the \OS2\SYSTEM directory on your boot
partition.

I opened a 4OS2 window and typed HELPMSG 0. I got "no help available"

It is, but Boot Manager requires a _primary_ partition on the _first_
hard drive. So to do what you want you will need to shrink the FAT32
partition to make enough space for a minimum sized primary partition for
Boot Manager at the start of the drive. Partition Magic (commercial)
will do this, there are a number of other freeware utilities available
as well. In the worst case a backup, re-partition, and re-install will
always work.

ER>2. I want to install OS/2 to D: above. I ended up

Once you've sorted out the first hard drive, install OS/2 and don't
accept the default install. Somewhere through there you will get an
option to format the partition and select the type.

ER>3. How do I get to set D: as 'installable'? C: doesn't
ER>have to startable, but does D:?

Once you've got Boot Manager on the first hard drive it'll all fall into
place.

LE> I don't recall there ever *being* one there.

There is an APPEND command in the default AUTOEXEC.BAT after one has installed
OS/2 Warp. I see that yours is heavily customised and altered from that.

I also see that you are using 4DOS, and that you haven't explicitly set the
APPEND environment variable. This is the cause of your problem.

Despite what the on-line help for 4DOS says, 4DOS isn't entirely happy with
OS/2 Warp's APPEND command, and you *do* have to do some things by hand when
you use 4DOS. Specifically, whilst APPEND can modify the master environment
area when COMMAND is the command interpreter, and change the value of the
APPEND environment variable therein, it doesn't do so if 4DOS is the command
interpreter. Unfortunately, the APPEND environment variable is what the
resident portion of APPEND uses to do its job. If it doesn't get set, then
APPEND doesn't work. If APPEND doesn't work, then the OS/2 message files
aren't accessible to DOS applications.

The solution is, very simply, to set the APPEND environment variable to the
required "append path" in the same way that you set your other environment
variables.

On my system, I have

        SET /R 4DOS\ENVIRON

in my AUTOEXEC.BAT, and I set the APPEND environment variable there. On your
system I see that you simply have a load of SET statements in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
In which case, simply add one more:

        SET APPEND=C:\OS2;C:\OS2\SYSTEM

For best results, set this environment variable *before* you load the resident
portion of APPEND (which you are doing on line 8 of your posted AUTOEXEC.BAT).

I've moved the discussion of 4OS2 and native OS/2 environment variables to the
OS2 echo.

Somehow, I don't think it will work this way. BM will change C:
assignments when both primary partitions are on the same physical drive.
Placing W98 on the second physical drive probably won't work.

If you do, then let me know the results. I still think Partition Magic

Partition Magic will indeed keep the contents of the partitions you are
resizing/moving. A good backup is still prudent, but I have not lost
any data in my usage of Partition Magic.

ER> BTW, on my local BBS the only Partition Magic program I've found is

Partition Magic is up to version 4.0 TTBOMK. I have PM 3.05 since this
is the last version with the native OS/2 executable (4.0 and up drop the
OS/2 executable, but provide a DOS executable for everything
non-Windows). This is commercial software, and so shouldn't be on a
BBS. You can find out more (if you have access) at www.powerquest.com.

W-9x can only be install'd on the first drive.. I was sugesting Warp on the

Sure, that's what it does best! The newer versions (v4+) allow
you to script the process such that resizing the partition and
moving it up a couple MB's can be done in a single invokation.
Just set it up and let it run. Go get a cup of coffee and read
the newspaper for a few minutes while the operation completes.

ER> BTW, on my local BBS the only Partition Magic program I've found is

ER> years old. Is that the most recent version?

Partition Magic is commerical software and really shouldn't be on
a BBS. The latest release (v4) came out about a year ago.
Although older versions canoften be had fairly cheaply, if you
have Win98 on a FAT32 partition you will probably want the latest
version.

On my system, I have plain DOS installed in a primary partition on the third
harddisk, under OS/2 it has drive letter E: and when this partition is booted
from Boot Manager it has drive letter C: ( I think BootManager is the key). I

since SET doesn't show which directories are APPENDed, the only thing you can
look at is to look in the batch file that's autostarted with the DOS session,
maybe you're looking in the wrong batch file?? The error message shows the
append is not in effect on your system, 'help' is supported in DOS sessions on

Windy won't boot off of the second drive.. ;( Leave it on the first drive, and
look around for FIPS. If the drive is still fat16, you can use it to make the
drive a bit smaller to install BM. Then install OS/2 on the second drive in an

I kinda thought this would work.. What are the -primary- partitions on drive
1 & 2 if I may ask??
I would guezz they are not FAT-16 for this to work..

While reading the mail, wispering this:

PM is up to version 4.0 though you can find ver 3.0 around for
just a few dollars, and it DOES do OS/2's HPFS drives, Linux
drives, and more. I think that the FAT32 stuff was added in the
ver 4.0 though.

Both HPFS. I forgot to mention this, HPFS is my normal type of filesystem, so
I forgot this.

RW> I would guezz they are not FAT-16 for this to work..

Ofcourse not. :)
