JC>Could you recommend a book on REXX that I can use to teach

It can.

I see JdeBP has already supplied you with a program to do this. He has
written it in Object REXX, so that might be a consideration.

JC>I looked up on the net Amazon Books USA and found 6 books
JC>and Amazon Books UK and found 13 books but can't decide
JC>which book is best.

For Classic REXX I normally recommend "Programming in REXX" by Charles
Daney, ISBN 0-07-015305-1. This book is not OS/2-specific, but covers SAA
REXX very well as a language.

For Object REXX, I recommend "Object REXX for OS/2 Warp" by Trevor Turton
and Ueli Wahli, ISBN 0-13-273467-2. As its title implies, this book is
focussed on OS/2. It also covers some of the more popular GUI tools for
REXX, notably VisPro REXX, VX-REXX (R.I.P.) and Dr. Dialog.

If you plan to work on Jonathan's code then the latter would seem the
obvious choice, as Daney does not cover Object REXX.

JC>Thanks for your time.

You're welcome.

Subj: Classic REXX files?

Hi, All:

Does anyone have (or has anyone seen) a list of all the files needed to use
classic REXX? Somehow, my CREXX files got munged, I suspect a FIXPAK, but I'm
not sure. In any case, it appears as tho some of the files are missing.

I suppose I could go to selective install or all the way back to the basic
install program and just install CREXX, but based on previous experience I
have little faith in the latter working without ruining something else in the
process... the selected options when I run "install" are mostly wrong.

In any case, I have a couple of programs that either don't work with OREXX, or
don't work properly. I'd like to have a working CREXX install, complete with
the INF file, available when I need it. I'd deeply appreciate any advice
anyone might offer!

Subj: OS2REXX Echo Rules

Rev: Wed 8 Jan 97 21:34
============================================================================
The Official Rules of The FidoNet OS2REXX Echo

The objectives of the OS2REXX echo are:

1. To provide a forum in which messages pertaining to programming in
REXX under OS/2 can be exchanged, without the additional traffic
generated by programming in other languages.

2. To provide technical support for newcomers to programming who have
chosen REXX as their first language.

3. To allow the discussion of the more esoteric features of REXX, as
   implemented under OS/2.

The rules under which messages are to be exchanged in this echo are:

0. The preferred language is English, but this is not compulsory. Since most
of the participants will be fluent in English, any problem reports will
receive the widest scrutiny if they are written in English.

1. Real names only. No pseudonyms, "handles", "monickers" or aliases.

2. Relevance to topic. Posts should pertain to the programming in and use
of REXX in the OS/2 environment. Other languages are on-topic if they
are being used to create REXX extension DLL's and/or REXX
subcommand handlers. Other platforms should only be discussed in the
context of their interaction with OS/2 (e.g. Client/Server) or illustrating
points via parallels in other platforms' implementation of REXX.

3. Advertising. A maximum of 1 advertisement per month by the
author/publisher of software relevant to the topic of the echo will be
permitted. Other products must NOT be advertised.

4. No flaming or abusive language will be tolerated. Also, excessive
profanity is not permitted. Please remember the sensibilities of others
before you upload that QWK packet.

5. Let the moderator do the moderating. Do not reply to "test" messages
from BBSes that have just joined the echo. Do not reply to off-topic
messages or flames. These will all be dealt with by the moderator.

6. You may post uuencoded, xxencoded or base-64 encoded message only with
the prior approval of the moderator. When asking for approval please state
the approximate size of the message, its content and usefulness to the
   other participants of the echo.

7. The OS/2 platform is deemed to be:
       Native OS/2, both text and PM;
       Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) session;
       Virtual Machine Boot (VMB) session.

Any REXX program that will run under any of these conditions may be
   discussed.

Note that if you need advice on how to set up a VMB image you should
ask in the OS2DOS echo, not OS2REXX.

These rules will be revised, amended or appended to as needs arise.

Thanks in advance for your compliance.

There are only 2 that differ between OREXX and CREXX, AFAIK.

If you are running Warp 3 with the OREXX add-on, you should SWITCHRX back to
CREXX before applying a Fixpak; then SWITCHRX back afterwards.

SM>In any case, I have a couple of programs that either don't

The only files that differ, AFAIK, are REXX.DLL and REXX.INF. Your CREXX
ones should be called CREXX.DLL and CREXX.INF when you are running OREXX,
and when you are running CREXX the OREXX ones are called OREXX.DLL and
OREXX.INF.

You could try SWITCHRX and re-boot. This might switch you back to OREXX.
However, if you are running Warp 4 then the CSF should have handled the REXX
maintenance correctly regardless of which interpreter you are running.

I'm not sure what you need for this, so hopefully someone else will answer
this.

I'd like to see the code that doesn't work in OREXX. When I switched to
OREXX, all my scripts worked fine except where I had errors, and one function
call that I dare not get into here again. Perhaps we can get your CREXX code
to work in OREXX.

DN> The only files that differ, AFAIK, are REXX.DLL and REXX.INF. Your

DN> You could try SWITCHRX and re-boot. This might switch you back to

There's also the following:

REX.MSG (CREX.MSG)
REXH.MSG (CREXH.MSG)
REXXUTIL.DLL (CREXUTIL.DLL)

I do believe, however, that REXX.DLL is all that's required for SAA REXX to
function. It'd probably simply display incorrect messages, or break when
the need for a message arose, if the above two files were not replaced.

I have no idea what would happen if one attempt to use OREXX's REXXUTIL
library with SAA REXX. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.
