The Device Manager is supported on the following operating systems:
- HP-UX* 10.20
- Solaris* 2.6 on Sparc*
- Red Hat* Linux 6.2

The following Java* virtual machines (JVMs) are supported:
- Sun* JVM 1.1.8 on Sparc
- Sun JVM 1.2.2 on Sparc
- Sun JVM 1.2.2 on Linux
- Hewlett-Packard* JVM 1.18 on HP-UX

The Device Manager can be integrated with HP OpenView Network Node Manager*
in the following versions:
- HP OpenView Network Node Manager 6.0 on HP-UX 10.20
- HP OpenView Network Node Manager 6.0 on Solaris 2.6 on Sparc

The online help system requires a Web browser.

2.2 Unsupported systems

The Device Manager was tested only on the platforms listed and Intel
therefore does not support it for other platforms, but any computer with
sufficient resources and running Sun JVM version 1.1.8 or greater (or the
equivalent from another vendor) may be capable of running the Device Manager.

3. DOWNLOADING A VIRTUAL MACHINE

- A "Java application" is a program written in the Java programming
language. The Device Manager is a Java application.
- A "Java virtual machine" (JVM) is a run-time interpreter required
to run a Java application. Several vendors supply JVMs.

If you do not already have a compatible JVM installed on your workstation,
you must install one before installing the Device Manager.

Sources of JVMs include:

    Solaris, Linux, Windows:
       http://java.sun.com
    HP-UX:
       http://www.unixsolutions.hp.com/products/java/index.html
    Linux:
       http://www.blackdown.org
    Linux, AIX, OS/2, Windows, AS/400
       http://www.ibm.com/java/jdk/
    FreeBSD:
       http://www.freebsd.org/java/

Note: the Device Manager has been tested only with the JVMs specified in
the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS section of these notes.

4. INSTALLATION

4.1 Download the archived software (es500.tar.gz)

4.2 Unpack es500.tar to a temporary directory.
You may use the following commands to decompress the file:
    > tar xvf es500.tar
The following files are included in the archive:
       setup.class
       README

4.3 Change the current directory to the directory that contains
    the setup.class file.

4.4 If you intend to integrate the Device Manager with HP OpenView:
    - You need root user privileges.
    - The xterm program must be available in your PATH
      environmental variable before running setup.

4.5 Invoke the installation wizard using your JVM. The command
required to invoke the wizard differs depending on your
operating system configuration and the version of the JVM
    you are running.

Example for Sun JRE 1.1.x or 1.2.x on Solaris:
    > java setup
    > /usr/java/bin/java setup

    Example for HP-UX, JRE 1.1.x:
    > /opt/java/jre/bin/jre setup

Example for Red Hat Linux, JRE 1.2.2:
    > /usr/local/java/bin/java setup

On other systems the command required may differ. You
should refer to your JVM documentation for details.

4.6 Follow the online instructions from the installation wizard.

    - Be sure to choose a destination directory for which you have
      write permission.

5. STARTING DEVICE MANAGER

5.1 Go to the directory in which you installed the Device Manager.
    Default location: /opt/intel/es500

5.2 Run the es500 script.

    Example:
    > cd /opt/intel/es500
    > ./es500

6. KNOWN ISSUES

6.1 Intel(R) Express 500 Series Switch Device Manager Setup.
When there is not enough free disk space or access rights are too low,
the setup wizard displays warning dialog more than once and exits. (#766)

6.2 Configure>VLAN/Routing>VLAN Advanced>STP/VLAN.
It is sometimes inappropriately possible to enable STP on a VLAN. In this
situation, the message "SNMP generic error" is displayed (#751).

6.3 "Font specified in font.properties not found" warning.
If this warning is shown on the console during application startup, the
the default fonts used by the JVM cannot be found in your system. Refer
to tour JVM documentation for instructions on how to fix this problem.
