Ben Hoffman passed around a list of ISV's who have committed to OS/2 versions
of their products since Jan/95.

There is an article in the OS/2 Professional concerning the Microsoft
consent degree that is very interesting.

Future meeting topics:

Lotus Development - Smartsuite for OS/2 Version 2
Greg Lane - VX Rexx Client/Server
Gary Pool - NetView Distribution Manager

The business meeting was closed.

Gary Pool, Randy Wright and Dave Keisker demo'ed some of their favorite
freeware (editor's note: ...and this Newsletter is *free*) and
shareware. All of their code can be found on the Woodmeister.

Information Officer Input/Output

If you are receiving this Newsletter, you must be interested in OS/2. Or
maybe you're just interested in Mid-Missouri. Or maybe you've got a lot of
time on your hands. No matter why you're here, I hope you enjoy it as much
as I enjoy putting it together. (Gee, I must *really* be Warped!)

We have a lot of exciting stuff coming up in the meetings. This month,
Harvey Sommers will give a presentation on customizing the Workplace
Shell. Now wait a minute, hold on, I know that you see this topic listed
in a lot of different places and think you must know it all by now, but we're
talking about programmatically customizing the Workplace Shell! Using REXX,
altering INI.RC! Cool stuff.

Harvey has also said that he will contribute some articles to the upcoming
newsletters that should prove to be very interesting.

Ben Hoffman will be giving a presentation of the Works program that comes
with Warp in an upcoming meeting (I talked him into it after seeing him do
a presentation for Social Services. Wow! It's a lot more powerful than I
thought!). Lotus is supposed to demonstrate the new SmartSuite at an
upcoming meeting, and Partition Magic will be demoed and given away at
an upcoming meeting. Interesting topics!

This issue is shorter than usual.

News From COMDEX as reported by Doug Azzaritto

Greetings, COMDEX visitors, now here's the news:

Atlanta was invaded this week by an unruly army of oddly-dressed people
who seem determined to create anarchy and defy any type of authority. No,
this was not a repeat of last weekend's FREAKNIK, it was just the annual
gathering of the group known as TEAM OS/2.

Shortly after his Windows world keynote speech tuesday morning, Microsoft
chairman Bill Gates was asked about his plans to release OS/2 versions of
Microsoft applications. Mr. Gates denied any plans to do so. When
reminded of his earlier promise to release OS/2 versions of his popular
software when IBM sold 2 million copies of OS/2, Mr. Gates replied, "What I
meant was 2 million OS/2 sales per month."

Early this morning, David Barnes, well known OS/2 evangelist, apparently
stopped talking long enough to take a breath. IBM named this breath
"inhale 95." Mr. Barnes estimated this breath will keep him talking well
into next year.

The Catholic church this week announced the formation of a new order of
nuns. Based in Prague, Chechoslovakia, this new order is devoted to surfing
the net, and will be known as "Our lady of Warp."

At Spring Comdex this week, IBM announced their latest version of it's
best-selling OS/2 Warp operating system. This newest version is meant
for customers who don't have the resources to run Warp. Stripped of the
user interface, multi-threading and crash protection, this product is able
to run on even the smallest computers. IBM will call this new product DOS.

NASA researches have made a breakthrough in high-strength materials
manufacturing for the "national space plane" project. This new material is
able to withstand the high winds and turbulence associated with supersonic
travel, without the slightest sign of stress or damage. Scientists are
secretive about the exact formula for this material, but sources say the
code name for this new material is "David Barnes' Hair"

Leaders of the Moslim faith this week announced an end to the long standing
"death order" on the head of author Salmon Rushdie. Instead, a moslim
death order has been placed on the head of computer columnist John Dvorak,
apparently for writing a column attacking Microsoft's Windows '95. A
spokesman for publisher Ziff Davis said the death order wouldn't be
ignored, but added "none of our other authors are in any danger of
attracting similar threats."

IBM today announced that it's latest operating system, OS/2 Warp, sold 2
million copies last month, making it the best selling operating system in
the world. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates again denied any plans to sell
applications for OS/2, saying he would produce OS/2 applications, and I
quote, "When the martians start buying Warp."

The search for missing OS/2 Programmer and "PINK NINJA" founder Doug
Azzarito continues this week. Mr. Azzarito has been missing since he left
to do an OS/2 demo in August, 1991. If you see him, consider him ARMED and
DANGEROUS, and call authorities at 1-800-3IBM-OS2.

Six Comdex visitors, all programmers for a large computer software company
were found this morning in the Georgia World Congress center, apparently
trapped for days, and near starvation. When rescuers asked the victims
what happened, one of the trapped programmers said they boarded the
escalator, but were trapped before reaching the next floor. Rescuers were
quick to point out the programmers were on a staircase, not an escalator.

Famous fitness expert Jack Lalanne was seriously injured this morning when
his computer-controlled stairmaster experienced a GPFault. Mr. Lalanne
issued a statement from his hospital room saying, "I've gotta get warped
before that thing kills me!"

Stac Electronics, maker of the popular STACKER disk compression software,
today introduced STACKER for tradeshows. This product compresses the space
required for tradeshow exhibit booths. After witnessing this technology, a
spokesman for Comdex sponsor, The Interface Group said next year's spring
Comdex will be held in the motor lobby at the Westin Peachtree hotel.

Nasa scientists confirmed the existence of extra-terrestrial intelligence
this week, after decoding messages received by high-powered radio
receivers. After months of in-depth study by NASA supercomputers, the
message, when translated to english reads, "Please send our warp upgrades."
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was unavailable for comment.

That's the news as I see it!

OSWPSHLK - RETRIEVING YOUR SHUTDOWN AND LOCKUP OPTIONS

================================================================
RETRIEVING YOUR SHUTDOWN AND LOCKUP OPTIONS
================================================================

Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
----------------------------------------------------------------

If you have access to another system that DOES have shutdown
and lockup:

1. Insert a formatted diskette into Drive A of a system that has
    the shutdown and lockup options.

2. Go to an OS/2 Window and from the root directory type:

     EAUTIL DESKTOP ATTRIB.MOD /S /P

If you installed 2.1 over 2.0 or are using 2.0 type:
     EAUTIL OS!2_2.0_D ATTRIB.MOD /S /P

3. Copy ATTRIB.MOD from the root directory of the hard disk to
    diskette. Type:

     COPY ATTRIB.MOD A:

4. Remove the diskette from Drive A and take it to the system
that is missing shutdown and lockup.

5. Start the system from the installation diskette.

6. When prompted, insert diskette 1 and press Enter.

7. At the Welcome Screen, press Esc to go to the A: prompt.

8. Remove diskette 1 and insert the diskette with the ATTRIB.MOD
    file.

9. From the root directory of your hard disk, type:

     EAUTIL DESKTOP A:ATTRIB.MOD /J /O /P

If you installed 2.1 over 2.0 or are using 2.0, type:
     EAUTIL OS!2_2.0_D A:ATTRIB.MOD /J /O /P

10. Revove the diskette and restart the system. Shutdown and
lockup is now on the desktop menu.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If you DO NOT have access to another system that has the
"Shutdown and "Lockup" options, use the following procedure.
This takes you to a DEFAULT desktop. You lose your
customization.

1. Start the system from the installation diskette.

2. When prompted, insert diskette 1 and press Enter.

3. At the Welcome Screen, press Esc to go to the A: prompt.

4. Remove diskette 1 and insert diskette 2, which contains the
    CHKDSK command.

5. Type the appropriate CHKDSK command, followed by the drive on
which OS/2 resides and press Enter.

X: denotes the drive where OS/2 resides.

FAT file system, type: CHKDSK X: /F
HPFS file system, type: CHKDSK X: /F:2

If you installed from CD, the prompt stops at CD drive in
the DISK_1 subdirectory, change to the DISK_2 subdirectory.

If there are crosslinked files, copy the files that are
crosslinked the hard disk to diskette. Delete the files on
the hard disk and copy the files from the diskette to the
    hard disk.

6. Remove the diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
    system.

7. At the prompt, go to the drive that has OS2. Change to your
    OS/2 subdirectory and type:

         DEL OS2.INI
         DEL OS2SYS.INI

If you get "Access Denied" type:

         ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R
You can now delete the files.

8. From your OS2 subdirectory, type:

MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter.
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter.

9. Change back to your root directory.
Delete entire DESKTOP directory structure, including DESKTOP
directory itself, if you have more than one desktop
directory, do the same for each one.

If you are using OS/2 2.0 the DESKTOP directory name is
OS!2_2.0_D. If your system is formatted HPFS you must include
directory names with spaces in them in double quotes. You
must remove all files in a directory before you can remove
it. Also, you cannot be in the directory when you try to
    remove it.

10. From the root directory, type:

        ATTRIB WP?ROOT.?SF -H -R -S and press Enter.
        DEL WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.

7. Remove the diskette and restart the system.

Sales of Warp

I got this from a colleague in the marketing group in Boca. I have asked
him two questions, but haven't had a reply. I assume these are US only
sales. I don't understand the significance of the second classification.
I can read the difference in the categories of sources...though the first
group is repeated...but...the percentages are way different and I wonder
what the analysis is......
-------------------------------------------8< snip ----------------------

These are the best numbers I've seen. CI stands for Computer Intelligence.
The numbers are off the shelf sales and do not include preload unless the
dealer preloaded it at the store with a shelf copy.

IBM Shareholder Meeting

"OS/2" got mention thrice, prominently, at the IBM Shareholder Meeting in
Charlotte, NC, April 25.

First, during a Q&A session with IBM's chairman, Louis Gerstner, an
individual (an IBMer, I think) said he was confused when switching between
OS/2 and Windows. He asked "should I buy OS/2 Warp or wait for Windows 95?"
Gerstner advised that "clearly" he should buy OS/2 Warp because it is "far
superior." Gerstner said he really "can't talk about Windows 96" and got a
big laugh from the audience (the "96" was intentional). He also used words
like "mature," "tested" and "very powerful" to describe OS/2 Warp.

Gerstner went out of his way to recommend and praise the new tutorial --
thought I'd mention that for the benefit of Mike Kaply <VBG> -- in response
to a comment about how difficult it was to use software from Mrs. Evelyn
Y. Davis. Mrs. Davis ("Lou, please call me Evelyn, dear") entertained, then
annoyed, the crowd.

Finally, Norris Creech used his opportunity during Q&A to express each and
every "concern" people have about the commitment of IBM to OS/2, about the
availability of native OS/2 applications, about television ads that actually
demonstrate OS/2 Warp, about lack of support from IBM for the "guys" of
Team OS/2 ... you get the picture. Gerstner's response included "I'm aware
of Team OS/2" (in a very positive "tone"), that there would be an increase
of OS/2 apps (he used that "2500 available" number), that the IBM Personal
Computer Company would be shipping OS/2 Warp preinstalled on machines that
could handle it, that IBM would "continue to make it clear" that OS/2 Warp
was the cat's pajamas (my characterization) and that the Chinese version had
just been released.

There were no technology or product demonstrations at this year's meeting,
a savings of "hundreds and hundreds" of thousands of dollars, according to
Gerstner. Initially, I was disappointed but, I suspect, the cost savings
was worth having and, what with Comdex going on, it would have taken much
more IBM resource to have "double the demos" this year.

OS/2 Warp Academic Edition

IBM's OS/2 Warp is Now Available to College Students and Faculty
in a Specially Priced Academic Edition

      AUSTIN, TX., April 24, 1995 . . . IBM today announced a new,
specially priced edition of its award winning OS/2* Warp
operating system for college bookstores. Under a new program
called IBM Academic Edition Offerings, students, faculty and
staff at colleges and universities around the country will be
able to purchase a reduced price edition of OS/2 Warp at a
college bookstore or retail outlet that sells PC software to
 collegiate customers.

"IBM's Academic Edition Offering program is just the latest
example of IBM's commitment to the academic community," said Jim
Corgel, general manager of higher education at IBM. "We believe
it is important to make our software products readily available
and affordable to students, faculty and staff at our nation's
 colleges and universities."

The specially priced edition of OS/2 Warp is the first
product to be offered under the IBM Academic Edition Offering
program, and will be followed by an academic edition of OS/2 Warp
Connect when that product ships later this year and by other IBM
software products in the near future.

"There are so many college students today that use a PC and
the Internet at school, and OS/2 Warp is the easiest way there is
to access the Internet," said Ian Bonner, director of
worldwide channel marketing and management, IBM Software. "OS/2
Warp's BonusPak gives students applications they need in a
low-price package, which will be especially appealing, given
 their tight budgets."

Academic editions of IBM software products are available
from IBM authorized remarketers and distributors, including
NACSCORP (the distribution subsidiary of the National Association
of College Stores). NACSCORP is the nation's largest supplier of
computer products to college bookstores, serving over 3,300
 stores.

The new academic edition of OS/2 Warp will ship in the same
shrink-wrap box as the regular retail version, but will be marked
with a special sticker. Academic Edition Offerings are also
available to students, faculty and staff at qualified
not-for-profit community and junior colleges, teaching hospitals
 and trade schools.

IBM has sold more than 2 million copies of OS/2 Warp
worldwide since November. The product is the third generation of
 IBM's award-winning 32-bit operating system. It features
impressive new usability features, slimmed-down system
requirements and comes with a BonusPak of more than a dozen
exploitive OS/2 applications, including easy access to the
Internet and CompuServe. OS/2 Warp comes preloaded on systems
from the IBM PC Company, Toshiba, CompuAdd, Vobis, Escom, and
Osborne. Dell offers Warp as a preload option to customers when
 they order PCs.
