About the Telnet BBS Guide

Welcome to the BBS Corner's Telnet BBS Guide - the largest
regularly maintained Telnet BBS Guide. Though we are not the only
Telnet BBS Guide in existance, but we are certainly one of the most
popular.

The Telnet BBS Guide started in October 1997. It is an offshoot of
the BBS Corner which started operation in April 1996.

Before the Telnet BBS Guide, the most popular telnet guide was the
SBI Telnet BBS List (Select BBSes on the Internet) operated by
Richard Scott Mark. It ran from sometime in 1994 until July 1997
when it was abandoned. This is quite surprising considering Richard
had just released a book about Internet accessable BBS systems. The
website continued to exist until July 1998 when the server's hard
drive crashed, and copies of it still exist in various forms on the
Internet.

By the time I decided to start my own list, his list was getting
very stale and out of date with a lot of dead BBS systems. I used
what he had, weeded out the dead BBS systems and added a bunch more
from other lists I was able to find at the time. If you remember
Richard's list, you'll see a lot of similaries here. The first
Telnet BBS Guide was released in late October 1997 and has been
updated every month ever since.

But why did I start this list (and take up a lot of my time)?
Basically I felt that Bulletin Board Systems were having a rough
time surviving and trying my hardest to keep the tradition alive.
I too run a BBS and wanted to attract users to my BBS and felt that
everyone out there needed a shot in the arm. So I worked to create
this list and work hard each month to keep it as updated as
possible.

Hopefully this list has made a difference and will continue to do
so in the future.
