NT is here and OS/2 Users have to worry about it?

Not yet! And there are NO publishing company told you real
story about this monster. Except PC/Computing.

What benefits you were really looking from this NT (Not There)
32-bit OS software?

Microsoft NT is really good OS software for major 16-bit Windows
application software running under either Network, or Standard
desktop computers.

If you visit local EggHead Software tomorrow you will not see
any NT installed PC. Reason is it takes a lot of Money for them
to install this OS.

Minimum memory 12MB to installation and 16MB to run some major
applications with multitasking performance, & multithreading.
There is more, it requires SCSI more than IBM OS/2 2.1, few
device supports as Only SCSI Scanner will work, and few CD-ROM
will work if you don't mind to forget Audio from CD.

Since 32-bit OS war began late 1990's from Unix to OS/2, NeXT
Step 3.1 and NT. Many people really want to try best OS for
them, but these OS require heavy resource to run. And not to
forget your money to run.

This month I compare between Microsoft NT Version 3.1 and IBM
OS/2 2.1

First I install to my IBM PS/2-75, 16MB of memory, Quantum SCSI
hard drive, IBM-Toshiba 3510 SCSI CD-ROM Drive, from house. At
the setup it will detect many SCSI devices as it could. It
detects my 3510 CD-ROM from Adaptec SCSI host adaptor.

It starts to install all the neccessary file to hard disk, and
it detects my OS/2 2.1 with HPFS from C Drive, and it asks me to
continue to install NT or Exit, if I choose "YES" I will lose
OS/2 from my system. ???

What is going on? Isn't that supposed to install to seperate
disk like D drive? or E drive? Truth is NT will destory your
OS/2 file whatever you install with boot manager or not

Microsoft made new file system called NTFS (NT File System) very
simular to HPFS from OS/2 and act like HPFS. But you will lose
your file with HPFS installed disk. If you install your OS/2
2.1 in FAT it's OK

So I choose NO and I stop installing. Next day I reinstall to
another machine, (Same PC I test for Video Support for OS/2
Last month)

These machines are identical and first one is installed as IBM
OS/2 2.1 with HPFS

Second one is installed as Microsoft NT with NTFS. These PC's
are installed with 16MB and 245 Maxtor IDE Hard drive, ATI
Graphic Pro VLB Model, Media Vision ProAudio 16 with Toshiba
3401B SCSI CD-ROM, and 9600bps FaxModem.

Since there are NO 32-bit Windows software is avaliable for NT
or OS/2, I installed 16-bit Windows Applications

Lotus Ami Pro 3.0, Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4, Microsoft Access 1.1
Micrografx Graphic works, Lotus Freelance Graphics, and Lotus
Improv 2.0

For I wanted to be equal as I could, so I installed all windows
applications for running under WIN-OS/2 as 3.1 enhanced mode.

For benchmark test I used ZD labs Benchmark software, and
Hercules Video Benchmark software.

First Test, Ami Pro for find and replace word in random order.

Second Test, 1-2-3 Release 4 with random calculate 1500
financing data from last year's buget.

Third Test, Microsoft Access 1,1 for query timing with again
from last year's customer data.

Fourth Test, Micrografx photomagic. Unfortunally NT doesn't
support Scanner from Niscan. So it failed the scan test.

I didn't test Lotus Freelance, & Improv for one reason, I didn't
have time to test all applications I have.

Result of 4 application above is this...

1. Ami Pro find and replace word "OS/2"

with "NT & OS/2". Win-OS/2 won by less than 2 second, it tooks
5.24 second to finish 10 page document I made.

2. 1-2-3 for calculating 1500 different data from last year's
budget . This one also Win-OS/2 won by 3.26 second.

3. Microsoft Access 1,1 for query from last year's customer
data. This test was somewhat mixed result. At first time
Win-OS/2 won by less than 1 second, and Second time NT won by
more than 1 second with doubled data, and third time came out
with Win-OS/2 Won.

If data is big and NT runs much faster, but if data is not that
big, than Win-OS/2 won.

Win-OS/2 won by better performance than NT with 16-bit
applications

I still wanted test graphic by using Micrografx Photomagic for
Scanning , but NT failed, so ran ZD Labs benchmark, result is
somewhat very simular to each other.

If you like to upgrade NT today, I will say these "Do you have
enough hardware power to run NT like memory, and space?"

If you like to run NT in 32MB memory and 1GB of harddisk it will
give you hot performance, but with same 32MB memory and 1GB of
harddisk OS/2 will run not just hot, but it will be Super fast
to your PC.
