THE PROBLEM:

 I have a major gripe with authors of OS/2 shareware. I am running a BBS and
 half of my paying users use OS/2, so naturally I try to accommodate them by
 getting as much newer items as I can to supplement the Hobbes Mirror I have
 on CD-Rom. The major problem is .DIZ and .SDI files, you don't put any in
 your archives!!

A SOLUTION:

here's what I do:
a) download the 00index.txt file from ftp.cdrom.com:/pub/os2

b) Run a REXX utility I cooked up to extract the appropriate
description for a set of files (ie: a:*.*) and put the output
into a description file..

I mean, with os/2 files, if it isn't on hobbes, wait a day, and
get the description from there.

for your interest, here's the REXX utility I wrote:
/* Make File Descriptions        */
/* Usage: mfd <descriptions.file> [<source.dir>]*/

CALL RXFUNCADD 'SysLoadFuncs', 'REXXUTIL', 'SysLoadFuncs'
CALL SysLoadFuncs

ARG DescFile SourceDir

IF DescFile = "" THEN DO
   SAY "USAGE: mf <descriptions.file> [<source.dirn>]"
   EXIT 1
END

IF SourceDir = "" THEN SAY "Extracting Descriptions from" DescFile
 ELSE SAY "Extracting Descriptions for" Sourcedir "From" DescFile

NewSourceDir = INSERT("*",SourceDir,LENGTH(SourceDir))
Result = SysFileTree(NewSourceDir, "List", "FO")

DO i=1 TO List.0
  Result = SysFileSearch(FILESPEC("name",List.i), DescFile, DescList)
  LastEntry = DescList.0
  IF DescList.LastEntry = 0 THEN NOP
    ELSE SAY DescList.LastEntry
END
