OSDACDRM - INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP A CDROM IN A VMB 10/24/94 =============================================================== INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP A CDROM IN A VMB (Virtual Machine Boot) ENVIRONMENT FOR OS/2 2.x =============================================================== Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures ---------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTONS: CD-ROM DEVICES THAT ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY OS/2 RESOLUTION: Before You Begin ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Check with your vendor to see if your CD-ROM device has OS/2 - 2.0 or 2.1 supported device drivers. Use the device driver that corresponds to the version of OS/2 you are running on your system. 2. If your CD-ROM device is not OS/2 supported, you need to set up a single session VMB to run your CD-ROM. a. If you are using DOS 5.0 to create the CD-ROM VMB, you need the file MSCDEX.EXE V2.21. It should be shipped with your CD-ROM. You can also obtain it from your endor, or download it from the IBM Bulletin Board (BBS) - (404)835-6600. b. If you are using MSDOS 6.0 to create the VMB, you need the file MSCDEX.EXE V2.22. It comes with MSDOS 6.0 - and is in the \DOS directory. Creating a CD-ROM VMB Diskette ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Each Image file you create equals the size of the diskette you use, for example, 360k, 720k, or 1.44mb high density diskette. There are two ways to create a VMB diskette: METHOD A: Start from a DOS bootable diskette that includes the FORMAT.COM file from native DOS. Type: FORMAT A: /S and press Enter. When you see a message asking you to Press any key, insert a blank diskette for the VMB in Drive A, and press Enter. COMMAND.COM is on the diskette when this step is completed. METHOD B: If you have native DOS installed on your computer, start from there. Insert a blank formatted diskette you want to use for the VMB in Drive A, and, from the DOS root directory, type: SYS A: and press Enter. COMMAND.COM is on the diskette when this step is completed. NOTE: After creating a VMB diskette, you can: - Start from OS/2's Command Prompts Icon View (DOS from Drive A) - Start from the VMB Image Icon on your Desktop 2. Start in OS/2 and copy the following files from the OS2\MDOS directory to the CD-ROM VMB diskette: ANSI.SYS FSFILTER.SYS FSACCESS.EXE EMM386.SYS HIMEM.SYS LPTDD.SYS MOUSE.COM (CD-ROM DRIVER) (Example: TSLCDR.SYS) MSCDEX.EXE You may add number of DOS 5.0/6.0 files to this diskette, but not until the CD-ROM VMB is running. 3. You can create the CD-ROM VMB image in two different ways following the instructions in Option A or Option B. ======================== O P T I O N A ==================== You can read/write to Drive A, but you cannot change the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS or add files directly to the VMB Image file on the hard disk. NOTE: Use a text editor to create files. 1A. On the VMB diskette create the following CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=FSFILTER.SYS DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=EMM386.SYS DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=ANSI.SYS DEVICE=LPTDD.SYS DEVICE=(CD-ROM DRIVER) - (Example: DEVICE=TSLCDR.SYS) FILES=40 BUFFERS=30 LASTDRIVE=Z 2A. On the CD-ROM VMB diskette create the following AUTOEXEC.BAT: ECHO OFF PROMPT $P$G MSCDEX /D:(DRIVER NAME) /E (Example: /D:TSLCDR.SYS /E) SET COMSPEC=C:\CDROM\COMMAND.COM MOUSE.COM PATH C:\;C:\VMB C: CD\CDROM CDROM.BAT 2A. Make a directory called C:\CDROM to store the CD-ROM VMB image. In the C:\CDROM directory create the following CDROM.BAT: C:\OS2\MDOS\FSACCESS A: CD\ This file lets read/write to Drive A. Otherwise, a DIR on Drive A, displays the Image files. 4A. Copy COMMAND.COM from the CD-ROM VMB diskette to the CDROM directory. Go to C:\CDROM and type: VMDISK A: CDROM.IMG and press Enter. This creates an image of the diskette you created. The Image File is CDROM.IMG and is in the the C:\CDROM directory. 5A. When completed, remove and store the diskette. Return to the Desktop. ======================== O P T I O N B ===================== You can read/write to alternate drive other than Drive A:, for example, M:. You can change the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and add files directly to the VMB Image file on the hard disk. Note: Use a text editor to create files. 1B. On the CD-ROM VMB diskette create the following AUTOEXEC.BAT: ECHO OFF PROMPT $P$G MSCDEX /D:(DRIVER NAME) /E (Example: /D:TSLCDR.SYS /E) MOUSE.COM PATH C:\;C:\CDROM FSACCESS M=A C: CD\CDROM NOTE: If you start DOS from an Image File, you cannot use physical Drive A until you release the Image File. FSACCESS M=A releases Drive A and assigns M. You may select another logical drive in its place. LAN USERS: Do not use FSACCESS Z=A if your Lan assigns logical Drive as the network drive. 2B. On the CD-ROM VMB diskette create the following CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE = FSFILTER.SYS DEVICE = HIMEM.SYS DEVICE = EMM386.SYS DOS = HIGH,UMB DEVICE = ANSI.SYS DEVICE = LPTDD.SYS DEVICE = (CD-ROM DRIVER) (Example: DEVICE = TSLCDR.SYS) FILES = 40 BUFFERS = 30 LASTDRIVE = Z NOTE: Assigning LASTDRIVE = Z for VMB purposes allows DOS Applications to read/write to physical Drive A - which is logical Drive M. When retrieving/saving a file from/to physical Drive A, rename the APPLICATION's drive designation to M instead of A. 3B. Make a directory called C:\CDROM to store the CD-ROM VMB image. Copy the COMMAND.COM from the CD-ROM VMB diskette to the CDROM directory. Go to the C:\CDROM and type: VMDISK A: CDROM.IMG and press Enter. This creates an image of the diskette you created. The Image File is CDROM.IMG and is in the C:\CDROM directory. 5B. When completed, remove and store the diskette. Return to the Desktop. Creating a CD-ROM VMB Desktop Icon ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Creating the Icon: a. Open the OS/2 System folder. b. Select the Command Prompts Icon. c. Copy the DOS Full Screen icon to the Desktop by holding down the Ctrl key and dragging the icon to Desktop while holding down the right mouse button. d. Close Command Prompts and the OS/2 System Folder. 2. Change the DOS Settings For the VMB Icon: a. Select the DOS Full Screen Icon. b. Press the right mouse button to display the menu. c. Select the Arrow on Open. d. Select Settings to open the Settings notebook. e. Select Session. f. Select DOS Settings. g. Change the following settings: DOS_UMB to: ON DOS_HIGH to: ON DOS_STARTUP_DRIVE to: C:\CDROM\CDROM.IMG XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT to: Default is 2048 (Min.Requirement - increase as needed) 3. Save the settings. 4. Select General and change the Title field to CDROM the name you want to call your Desktop Icon. 5. Close the Window. 6. Select the new DOS CD-ROM VMB Desktop Icon. 7. To EXIT the VMB, create a file in the VMB directory called X.BAT containing the following: @ECHO OFF C:\OS2\MDOS\EXIT_VDM 8. Save the file 9. Type X at the command prompt. NOTE: If you have problems with the above steps, check all your file and directory names, especially the ones in the DOS Settings. If you need assistance: 1. Open Master Help Index. 2. Select Search Topics. 3. Type: Starting from an Image File in the entry field. 4. Scroll to the DOS section 5. Select the Starting from an Image File and read the information.
