README.TXT for SMLDYNM1.ZIP

INTRODUCTION

    These are the instructions for replacing the IBMDEV32.DLL file with one
that will allow you to use your Dynamite Pro card with Tseng W32 chip and
OS/2 release drivers at 1024x768 resolution with small fonts and icons. The
ZIP contains two different files, SML1024.DLL and SMLV102.DLL, corresponding
to different releases of the original drivers from Tseng. The replacement
files are for the driver releases that contain file SV768256.DL_ with a
time-date of 15:42:26 1/26/94 or a time-date of 16:48:00 3/23/94 (Tseng
release 1.02). I do not recommend attempting to use this replacement file
with any other versions since it has not been tested with earlier or later
releases of the Tseng W32 drivers.

    I've organized the instructions around my OS/2 2.1 GA version. I
have not tried this with OS/2 for Windows, but see no reason why this
replacement file would not work there also. Note however, that there
maybe small differences from the instructions below in what is necessary
to modify the Windows WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files.

    Since I haven't gotten any problem reports from the first release of
this patch in early Feb. 94, I assume that these instructions have been
sufficient. If you are find that changes are necessary, please drop me a
note with any changes, problems, etc., so that I can include them in a
revision to this instruction sheet.

STEP-BY-STEP

1. Install the Hercules (Tseng W32) release drivers according to
instructions. (The Tseng drivers are available on the Tseng forum on
Compuserve, file /pub/os2/2_1/drivers/os2w32.zip on ftp.cdrom.com, or
the Hercules BBS.) Select the 1024x768x256 operating mode as normal. Verify
that this is working OK.

1a. Not absolutely necessary, but if like me you're the cautious type,
Backup up your desktop set up! I use Dave Lester's WPSbkup for this, and
highly recommend the program. It is available at ftp.cdrom.com as well
as Compuserve on (I believe) the OS2USER forum. You may wish to perform
this step first if you already have a small icon/font set up.

2. Boot from the OS/2 installation floppies. Press ESC (for Cancel) when
the installation screen starts asking you questions. This will get you
to an OS/2 command line prompt. An alternative to this is to use
something like SHIFTRUN.EXE (also available on ftp.cdrom.com &
Compuserve) to pause the OS/2 boot process before the OS/2 desktop is
displayed, and present you with a command line prompt. I personally use
SHIFTRUN, and have found it to be very useful for doing just these types
of things as an alternative to using the floppy boot process. The point
here is that you have to have the command line prompt without the
desktop being displayed, since OS/2 won't let you replace the file if the
file is already in use, i.e. the desktop is already running.

3. Copy the replacement file to your \OS2\DLL directory as IBMDEV32.DLL.
The replacement file depends upon your version of the Tseng drivers.

For the 1/26/94 version of SV768256.DL_ :
    COPY A:\SML1024.DLL x:\OS2\DLL\IBMDEV32.DLL

For the 3/23/94 version of SV768256.DL_ :
    COPY A:\SMLV102.DLL x:\OS2\DLL\IBMDEV32.DLL

where x: is the OS/2 drive.

4. Re-boot OS/2 normally. (If you paused the normal boot up process with
SHIFTRUN, just type EXIT to continue the normal boot.) When done, your
OS/2 desktop should be normal but with small fonts and icons. You can
breathe easier now since you've made it past any re-install point. All
you have left to do is get WIN-OS2 also working with the small fonts.

5. Edit the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM.INI file as follows:

In the section labeled: [boot]
    change
         fonts.fon=xgasys.fon
         fixedfon.fon=xgafix.fon
         oemfonts.fon=xgaoem.fon
    to
         fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
         fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon
         oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon

In the section labeled: [boot.description]

    change
         aspect=100,120,120
         display.drv=ET4-W32 1024x768 256 col. (Large fonts)
         sdisplay.drv=ET4-W32 1024x768 256 col. (Large fonts)
    to
         aspect=100,96,96
         display.drv=ET4-W32 1024x768 256 col. (Small fonts)
         sdisplay.drv=ET4-W32 1024x768 256 col. (Small fonts)

6. If you've had some other card/driver installed, it maybe necessary to
edit the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\WIN.INI file. The Tseng installation
procedure apparently doesn't touch this itself, but others do/have.

In the section labeled: [fonts]

    change
         MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (XGA res)=sserife.fon
         Courier 10,12,15 (XGA res)=coure.fon
         MS Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (XGA res)=serife.fon
         Symbol 8,10,12,14,18,24 (XGA res)=symbole.fon
         Small Fonts (XGA res)=smalle.fon
    to
         MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)=sserife.fon
         Courier 10,12,15 (VGA res)=coure.fon
         MS Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)=serife.fon
         Symbol 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)=symbole.fon
         Small Fonts (VGA res)=smalle.fon

7. Everything should now be okay with both WIN-OS2 and OS/2 itself
working with small fonts and icons at 1024x768 resolution.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS & MISC.

    Tseng driver release 1.02 was done to correct problems with IBM's CSD
to upgrade OS/2 2.1 to 2.11. Because I personally follow the adage:
If it's not broke, don't fix it! - I have not installed the CSD myself.
The result is that I have not actually tested my modified ver. 1.02 DLL
with the CSD. However, since I follow a set recipe to hack the original
Tseng supplied driver, I anticipate no unique problems with the CSD. The
release 1.02 drivers do seem to work fine with the original OS/2 2.1
version. It is very important to follow the first step in the instructions:
Make sure the original driver is working _*before*_ installing the patched
IBMDEV32.DLL file.

    The installation of this patch would certainly be cleaner if done
directly from a modified driver installation disk. This would also do
the Windows .INI modifications automatically. Unfortunately, I don't
know how to get the modified IBMDEV32.DLL file back into the compressed
SV768256.DL_ from which it originally comes. OS/2 has an UNPACK command,
but I've been unsuccessful locating PACK or whatever is used to compress
it in the first place. Please drop me a note if you know how to do this.

    I wish to thank Daniel J. Neades who produced the SMLDRV21.ZIP
(available from ftp.cdrom.com in /pub/os2/2_1/drivers) file which gave
small fonts at 1024x768 with some of the SVGA devices originally
supported in the OS/2 2.1 GA release. I successfully used that with a
ATI VGAWonder from 6/93 until 2/94, when I replaced the card with a
Hercules Dynamite Pro ISA/2Meg unit. The README in Neades' package
contained the "How to" recipe that I followed in generating this file.
Having successfully followed that recipe (twice with this release), which
isn't all that difficult despite being a rank amateur, I can only echo
some of Neades' comments and wonder why IBM and other driver writers don't
allow for the use of smaller resources at the higher resolutions.
